AGM Cruise

Report thanks to Dave Flett

The AGM run on the 14th of April also doubled as the 55th Mustang anniversary run.

For all the 20+ cars that meet at the BP Tauriko there was a special anniversary decal

the club ordered from USA to commemorate the event. In true anniversary fashion

we had a good mix of mustangs from a 64 1/2 through to the late model NZ mus-

tangs.

The run was a short run via a picturesque rural route through to state highway 2 and

then back to Bethlehem and Otumoetai where the AGM was being held.

When we arrived at the AGM venue we met up with more members with Mustangs,

making the turn out very successful one.

Meet your new Committee in the next few pages.

Ford Day at Ohope

Report thanks to Charles Quintal

April 13th - what a fine clear sunny day for a cruise to Ford Day Ohope. We arrived at 10.00,

parked up with W.M.O.C members. As the morning passed more and more hot rods and trucks

arrived. By 11.30 the grounds were full. At the far end of the park were a lot of retro caravans

on show, more vehicles were coming and going as the afternoon wore on. A great day had by

all.

Thanks to Ocean Ford, Whakatane

Upcoming Club runs

May 2019

Annual Anzac Run (Tri Club Run)

We have been advised by the Waikato Club that the ANZAC tri club run will be held on Sunday 12 May this year at the Matamata RSA club. Three team games will be played, winning club will take home the Tri club trophy.

There is a Roast meal and dessert for lunch afterwards for $27.50 per person. We are assured that this is very good value for money. RSVP's are needed by Sunday 5 May.

Cars to meet at BP The Lakes at 10.30am to travel to Matamata for an 11.30am start.

Convention update

Planning for this year’s Convention in Hamilton, from Friday across Labour Weekend and hosted by the Waikato Mustang Club is well advanced. The team from Waikato has given a brief update of progress so far:

Acommodation is at the Distinction Hotel. The only way they will accept bookings is via the booking form that has already been sent out via email. This hotel is filling up rapidly so get in quickly if you want to stay with the main group. WMOC have a second option if the Distinction sells out and they will advise once this has happened.

Registration forms and emails will be sent out by the end of May

Registration numbers will be limited and will close as soon as their num-bers are reached. Again, the answer is to book quickly.

And a handful of non-club runs that may interest you:

Mustangs in Songs

In this first instalment of a new regular segment what could be more fitting than to start

with the iconic Mustang Sally. I’m sure we all know how to sing it—some better than oth-

ers—but do we know the story behind it? The following courtesy of Wikipedia:

"Mustang Sally" is a rhythm and blues (R&B) song written and first recorded by Mack Rice

in 1965. It was released on the Blue Rock label (4014) in May 1965 with "Sir Mack Rice" as

the artist. The song uses an AAB layout with a 24-bar structure.

It gained greater popularity when Wilson Pickett covered it the following year on a single, a

version that was also released on the 1966 album, The Wicked Pickett.

History:

According to music historian Tom Shannon the song started as a joke when singer Della

Reese wanted a new Ford Mustang. Rice called the early version "Mustang Mama" but

changed the title after Aretha Franklin suggested "Mustang Sally". The song is influenced by

the children's game song (recorded by various artists) "Little Sally Walker", versions of

which include the lyrics "Rise Sally rise, wipe your weepin' eyes", with variations.

In the liner notes for The Rascals Anthology, Felix Cavaliere states that The Young Rascals

recorded "Mustang Sally" and "Land of a Thousand Dances" before Pickett and that Atlantic

Records "copped those two songs from them and gave them to Pickett" to record. When

Cavaliere does his flashback concerts, he also recounts how Rice thanked him for having

been the B-side of the Young Rascals' hit, "Good Lovin'", explaining that the royalties were

paid by records sold — thus, the B-side writer was paid for an equal number of sales as the

A-side.

Popular versions

Rice's version made it to #15 on the U.S. R&B charts in 1965. Pickett's version climbed to #6

on the R&B charts and #23 on the Pop charts in 1966, #4 in Canada on the (RPM) charts,

and #28 in the UK Singles Chart on its original release and #62, when it was released again

in 1987.

In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Wilson Pickett's recording of the song at #434 on a list of Roll-

ing Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song dropped seven spots to #441, when

the magazine published its 2010 update of the list.

Mustang Sally reached #17 on the New Zealand charts.

Early Mustangs in Bond Movies

Two Bond Girls drive a first generation Ford Mustang convertible in the Bond film series:

Tilly Masterson drives a white Ford Mustang convertible in Goldfinger (1964) and Fiona

Volpe drives a blue Ford Mustang convertible in Thunderball (1965).

The Thunderball Mustang

In the movie Goldfinger, James Bond (Sean Connery) in his Aston Martin DB5 encounters

Tilly Masterson (Tania Mallet) in a 1964 Ford Mustang convertible on the Furka Pass in the

Swiss mountains, while chasing Goldfinger's Rolls-Royce. Bond slashes the tires of the Mus-

tang to force a meeting. He brings Masterson to a nearby gas station so she can get help.

Tilly Masterson's Mustang is cream white, with a red leather interior and red top, and has a

British license plate MLO 973B.

In 1964, the year Goldfinger was filmed and released, the Mustang was actually a brand

new model. Introduced by Ford in April of that year the car from that year is also known as

the 1964½ model. Since then it has become one of the most successful and well-known

Ford models, currently still produced in its sixth generation.

All USA Day, the winter months are a golden opportunity to take the car off the road and
