A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTWelcome all. To our exhibitors who make the show what it
is. To our club members and friends who have come to lend a hand, to support us, and to remember Robert Bartram at his Memorial Show. To Di Cross, past President and Life Member for opening the show, and for selecting and preparing, with Kathryn Smith, a framed print from Robert's estate to be awarded for Best In Show. And to Anne Roslin-Williams, our Patron, for her words "Remembering Robert" and for ensuring we have bubbles to raise a glass for him. Cheers!
Penny Mead
Robert Bartram20 Sep 47 – 23 Apr 19
Robert’s dog breeding prefix was Craigend. I am sure when he first started he didn’t envisage how well-known this prefix was to become in Terrier circles, not only in Australia but internationally. Under the Craigend prefix, Robert bred over 168 Champions, the majority of them Cairn Terriers with the balance made up mainly from his second breed – Border Terriers, plus the odd Norfolk, Scottish Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Robert also had a few other breeds over the years, I remember he had a Griffon and a Jack Russell at some stage as well.
Robert bought his first Cairn Terrier in 1964 and had at least 11 generations down from her in the female line. He felt great satisfaction that he had a part in keeping a family going that first arrived in Australia in 1925.
Robert’s second breed – the Border Terrier, came into his kennel in the late 1970’s when he imported Brigit of Patterdale from New Zealand. During this time and the early 1980’s a number of Border Terriers were imported into Australia to increase the gene pool. To complement these dogs, Robert imported Rhozzum Venture from the UK and he was to prove a very successful stud dog who greatly impacted the breed in Australia. Venture (or Bert as he was called) ended up at our place for the last 4½ years of his life where he died at the age of 16. In 1982, at the first Border Terrier Show, local Terrier judge and one of Roberts long time friends – Derek Hyde, judged the Sweepstakes classes and Robert won Best in Show with Rhozzum Venture with Club Patron, Mrs Francis Sefton, as the judge.
Robert was one of the founding members of the Border Terrier Club of NSW in 1982 and was the inaugural Publicity Officer. Robert was also Secretary of the Border Terrier Club for a lengthy period and his dedication was again acknowledged with a Life Membership. He became Patron of the Border Terrier Club of NSW a few years ago and was honoured to be a Patron alongside of his great friend Anne Roslin-Williams in the UK. Robert judged Border Terriers at Championship level in the UK in 1994.
Robert believed that breed clubs were the foundation of the dog world and was bitterly disappointed that many of the newer exhibitors didn’t understand their importance.
He was a mentor to so many over the years, not only in his chosen breeds but with dogs in general. Robert was very giving of his knowledge and only to keen to impart this knowledge to those who would listen and appreciate. He was also interested in other breeds and in the past at dog shows could often be seen with non-Terrier and Terrier folk talking to him about all things dogs!
Whilst Robert was a local Terrier identity, long term friends in the dog world know Robert was recognised and respected in Australia and overseas.
Dogs, particularly Terriers, were a passion. Robert was a great Terrier man and a great friend to many and one who will be greatly missed.
Di Cross

REMEMBERING ROBERT by Anne Roslin-Williams
When I put the heading, remembering Robert, for this epistle, I thought “how could anyone forget such a character?” Large in stature, and in personality.
Our friendship developed over the years, starting with very polite correspondence about Borders, to spending many happy times together both in the UK and Australia, and on a memorable judging trip to Finland, where we were invited as Border championship specialist judges. It was about the time of a World Show, and we were in the company of one of the organisers. Robert, being Robert, couldn’t wait to put her on the spot and enquired why the appointed World Show Border judge had never awarded CCs in the breed, only to be told that she had heard that all Border breed specialists were crooked. That told us… A great start to our trip! I don’t need to tell you of the enthusiasm and dedication Robert put into his breeds, and his breed clubs. I admired his astute input through judicious Border imports, trying to keep the breed on the right lines, an unexaggerated working terrier. A respected judge, it was a shame that practicalities prevented him from judging more often in the UK. We were so disappointed when he pulled out of his last appointment, which would have been in Border Terrier country, Kelso. And I had lined up some otters in the wild for him, something he wanted to see, but difficult to arrange. We had a lot of fun together: watching the platypus which I had ordered, taking him both autumn fox hunting and summer mink hunting in the UK, travelling all over to visit his friends in many breeds and to shows. He had many interests outside the world of dogs and one of my first assignments, as chauffeur, at his request, was to take him to visit a famous poultry breeder he knew about in the UK. And how he enjoyed sampling the local ciders – though that did nothing for his gout, I recall. We enjoyed endless discussions about dogs, both face to face, in correspondence and long phone calls. I found him an invaluable sounding-board about Borders. Someone of deep knowledge with a great memory for dogs. Some decades after he had seen a dog, I asked him a specific question about that dog – without hesitation he fired off the answer, which affirmed my opinion. His mischievous sense of humour put me in some embarrassing situations. One to share was when he farmed me out on the unsuspecting Goldsworthys, whom I had never met and are now firm friends. I thought they were acting a bit strangely with me until I discovered the devil had told them I was an alcoholic nymphomaniac – not true I assure you. Out fox hunting together, on foot not horseback, (don’t let your imaginations run away with you…) the day before we were both to judge at championship level, a Yorkshire Terrier rushed into the road under the wheels of a moving car. Luckily it was unhurt. Robert said he was glad such a game little dog had survived. Why game? I asked. He pointed out that it had only three legs, a fact that had escaped my notice. Some wry comment ensued about my judging capabilities for the next day when I couldn’t even see a missing leg. That took some living down! At one time in the breed we had a writer of nasty anonymous letters, now deceased. It was not really anonymous, as we all had worked out who this was. Imagine my discomfort when, after a lunch party at which said person was invited, our friend sat down and said in cosy tones, “now tell me, have you received any of these anonymous letters I have heard about?”. I could have killed him! One more story. En route to judge in New South Wales I stopped off in Perth to see an old chum. While there, I put my back out dodging under a fence. Robert was not pleased to see me creaking about when he met me at the airport. He told me I had been invited because I was not in my dotage and not usually unsound, as so many decrepit UK judges had been previously. I said I needed a chiropractor, so he took the first one in the phone book, beginning with the letter A. What a sadist. I lay in my underwear on the table, which was in an open doorway onto the street, watched by interested passers-by. In agony, I was literally biting the table, thinking “be British, don’t give in”. No sympathy from our friend. Thankfully Mr A did a good job and the back recovered well for me to judge a few days later, but once I had finished the marathon of judging, I had had it. To get back to the car meant climbing up steep steps. Robert and Derek Hyde took me, one under each arm, and Mary Poppinsed me up, my feet skimming the ground, and back to the car, where I was unceremoniously deposited and told to get in!! Yes, he was special. We all miss him, but I bet everyone here who knew him will remember him with a smile, as I always do. It was good to know him. I will raise a glass this evening to his memory, with thanks for his friendship, and for all he did for terriers and especially Borders.
ENJOY YOUR DAY! Wish I could be there. Anne

Introducing our Judges
BREED - Mrs Rita Francis-Little (NSW)Being born in the central West of NSW. which is sheep
and wheat country, it was natural that my interest in horses and dogs would continue all my life.
Originally Carisbrooke, my prefix, was that of my Anglo Arabian horses which I bred at Galston, a rural suburb on the outskirts of Northern Sydney. It soon became apparent that a vermin eradicator was needed in the feed shed. At the time we had a cattle dog. One evening my husband came home with a Jack Russell Terrier pup, he had JRTs in England and admired their tenacity and ability to work. The children named her Beaty, she was my foundation bitch establishing Carisbrooke JRT in 1974.
Later I also bred and made up Cairn Terriers with stock from that late well respected judge and breeder Robert
Bartram. In 1989 I decided to continue my interest in dogs especially in the area of " Form follows
Function " and commenced study to become a Terrier judge qualifying in 1991. Since then I have been fortunate to be invited to judge in Sweden, Norway, Russia and more recently New Zealand as well as all Eastern States and Tasmania.
I am looking forward to my appointment with the Border Terrier specialty as it gives me an opportunity to extend my knowledge of a breed which until recently, has not been seen in large numbers in the show ring.

SWEEPSTAKES & PROPERTY - Mrs Dianne Wright (NSW)
My first Dalmatian born in 1994 was also my first show dog. Since then my husband John and I have breed Dalmatians with successful winning careers in Australia, Canada, NZ, America and Europe. Our prefix is Starswept Dalmatians.
I am licenced to judge Toys, Terriers, Gundogs and Non Sporting groups. Judging assignments have taken me to, England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, USA, South Africa Asia, Italy, The Netherlands, Denmark and NZ. It is wonderful to see breeds around the world and talk to breeders.
