In celebrating the Black History Month 2013, Society Alive (SA) will be celebrating the life and times of Dr. Tai Solarin. Dr Solarin who was born to Nigerian parents was Nigeria’s leading civil right activist, educator and author. He was educated in Nigeria and England and was married to his English born wife Sheila. our community towards higher education.

Date of celebration is 18th October, 2013

Venue is the Clover Hill Village Hall, Bowthorpe (opposite Humbleyard)

Time: 7-9pm.

COMMUNITY ACTION IN BOWTHORPE

Beverley Rushbrook is the newly appointed Community Agent for Bowthorpe. She lives in the Area. Her post is funded for 18 months by Living Well in the Community Fund. She aims to encourage local services & community groups to engage with older people

Beverley has been very busy during the six week School Holiday organising and delivering her first Intergenerational Community Project funded by Youth Advisory Board and Age UK Norwich. Beverley and her team of youth workers recruited 32 young people from the area to work with 7 older people from Alnwick Court. The older and younger generations created a display board and a memory bench featuring photographs of their time together. This project has broken down barriers of fear misconception, attitude and misunderstanding by both generations.

Bowthorpe: First Impressions (and second thoughts)

Before I moved to Bowthorpe, I searched the area on Google’s maps, street

view and even images from satellites in space, but appeared to find nothing more than a mass of residential housing, apparently isolated among acres

of unclaimed wilderness. I later discovered a maze of interconnecting

pathways that, if I had known where they led, would have saved me hours

walking home by road. However, I soon discovered that Bowthorpe is

conveniently situated on the main routes to Norwich city centre, the

University of East Anglia and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

Many older and foreign students are choosing Bowthorpe as a more

affordable alternative to accommodation in the Golden Triangle, and they can find themselves living even closer to the UEA than others from the

more traditional student areas.

For those working at the NNH, Bowthorpe might not be their initial choice of residence, as it is well beyond practical walking distance from the

hospital. Even so, the regular First Norwich bus service, which diligently

navigates its way throughout almost the entire area, does eventually drop

you at the door.

Bowthorpe may not appear to be steeped in the same amount of history as

the centre of Norwich, as very little of the original village remains.

Nevertheless, Bowthorpe’s Heritage Trail illustrates a fascinating and long-

established community that pre-dates the Roman era and is even

mentioned in Doomsday Book.

When I first told friends and colleagues that I was moving to Bowthorpe, I

received many raised eyebrows and discerning glances. However, the more people that I meet from this welcoming, functional and unique area, the

more I have found to prove them wrong.

Many thanks to the Community Action Youth Workers Brian, Claire Francis, Kelly Mallett and Elizabeth Hirst. Thank you to Mow and Grow for donating the building.

This has changed my view of Older people.I always used to think they were boring.

But after meeting them I now know that they are interesting (Phunziro age 11)

I really enjoyed all of the youth group because I liked that we were getting involved

in lots of different things. (Jade Syer age 14)

Very well organised and fantastic atmosphere Especially love how the young peo-

ple interact confidently with Adults (resident of Alnwick Court).

If You would like to link with the Community Action Youth Project please contact Beverley Rushbook on 07747667540 or email [email protected]

.Your Policing Team will be at the Wendene shops on 19th October between 12 and 2pm. We invite you all to come along and share your concerns with us. We will be available to answer any questions or listen to any problems. Or just come along to say hello and share any general information about activities in the neighbourhood. We are always happy to see you and we want to know what concerns you feel we should be

prioritising to improve the neighbourhood.

At the moment I have identified three main priorities:

My team have continued their good work on identifying people responsible for fly tipping and we have dealt with one resident for recently dumping bags of rubbish on Cloverhill. We are also working closely with the council to remove any items abandoned to keep our parks and streets cleaner and more pleasant for all

residents.

My team have continued to address the motorists in Bowthorpe who break the law. I appreciate that this is an ongoing concern and we will be visibly more present on the main roads and bus lanes in the next few weeks. I remind you all to consider your parking, particularly outside schools. So far we have stopped numerous drivers contravening the bus lanes and we have stopped motorists found with no insurance, MOT or simply speeding on our streets.

We will be doing more of this.

We are targeting the anti-social behaviour resulting from street drinking and drug use. In the last few days I have led searches on addresses and I have arrested a person suspected of being

involved in the supply of drugs.

I would like to repeat that the amount of crime in Bowthorpe is still low. It is a nice place. This is because of the real sense of community we have. We will work hard to keep it this way as we are fully committed to working with you. Please keep the information coming. You can contact us by dialling 101 or through crime stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. It is with your continued support that we can make Bowthorpe one of the safest

areas of Norwich in which to live.

Harvest Harvest Festivals began in 1843, when the Reverend Robert Hawker

invited parishioners to a special thanksgiving service at his church at

Morwenstow in Cornwall. Ever since churches have been decorated with

home-grown produce at the Harvest Festival service. Yet as British people

have come to rely less heavily on home-grown produce, there has been a

shift in emphasis in many Harvest Festival celebrations. Increasingly,

churches have linked Harvest with an awareness of and concern for

people in the developing world.

This year St. Michael’s Junior School, Clover Hill Infant School and Bowthorpe Church are raising money for WaterAid. WaterAid works in 27 countries around the world providing safe water, sanitation and hygiene products to some of the world’s poorest people. Diseases caused by dirty water kill more people each year than AIDS, malaria and measles combined. If you would like to give a donation, their website is www.wateraid.org/uk. People in this country in desperate need also need our help. Here in Norwich St. Martin’s Housing trust and other charities help those who are homeless. Norwich Food Bank provides emergency help to those who do not know where their next meal is coming from. At this year’s Harvest service at Bowthorpe Church at 10.30am on Sunday 6th October we will not only be raising money for WaterAid but we will also be giving our dried and tinned produce to Norwich Food Bank. But whether you can give or not, I would like you to take five minutes and consider what you are thankful for. In these tight economic times we can be so focussed on what we haven’t got that we forget what we have got , and let’s be thankful. Until next month,

Revd Mark Elvin

ASHWELL COURT

Hello again everyone. Greetings from Ashwell Court. Well we did get some more lovely summer weather. Several of us (including Caroline) went on holiday and enjoyed lots of sunshine – which for once was everywhere. Unfortunately, changeable as ever, it is again very cold. Still I hope we shall enjoy another sunny, warm spell before Winter. At Ashwell Court we are still enjoying our weekly Bingo sessions and coffee mornings, also exercises twice a week, which keeps us on our toes! We have also had entertainment in the evenings. We had a visit from Michael and Helen, which is always enjoyable with their lively singing. We are also looking forward to another visit by Pat James. In September several of us went with Age Concern on a coach trip to Southwold which was very enjoyable.. Also we joined with Bradecroft on their Mystery Tour, which as always was lovely. We hope you all enjoy the rest of the summer. Cheerio for now, best wishes. Margaret

Rainbows, Brownies and Guides.

Thanks to funding from DEFRA's

"The Big Tree Plant" scheme, we are able to offer free trees, and all you need to plant them, to local communities across East Anglia. If you know of a site which would benefit from having

some trees planted, we can supply everything else: - the trees themselves - most native species available, or fruit trees in limited numbers - canes and guards to protect them when they are young and vulnerable - depending on your location and when you want to plant the trees, we may be able to offer to lend you spades and other hand tools, or even some volunteers to help you plant them! If you think you might be interested, please contact me, first come first served. The total number of trees available is limited so we may not be able to give you all the trees you want this winter, but more will be available from autumn 2014. When you contact me I will then discuss your plans with you, to make sure that your site is suitable, and that we can provide the most appropriate trees. You will also need to produce evidence of landowner permission before the trees are finally delivered to you, and please take some before-and-after photos on the day of planting. I look forward to hearing you plans! Mark Webster.

A group of Guides from all over Norfolk went back in time to take part in the 5th annual 1940's Guide camp at Gressenhall Workhouse and Farm this Sumer. One of our Costessey Guides, Georgia, was lucky enough to be selected. During the week long camp the girls learnt how to put up bell tents, chop firewood, and live off rations. They enjoyed sewing and knitting lessons where they created their own 'make do & mend' badges. The girls were interviewed by a local news team about what they were most looking forward too - you may have spotted them on the television! To round the week off, the girls all dressed up in in their vintage tea dresses for a barn dance, before packing camp away until next years event. 1st Bowthorpe Brownies enjoyed trips out with Bowthorpe Beavers, Cubs and holiday club to Thetford forest and a day camp where we sang around

The Raptor Trust I am always inspired when we attend events and school/educational talks at just how many misconceptions there are about our native birds of prey. Here are a few examples for you; The Cheetah is not the fastest animal in the world, in fact it must seem like a snails pace to a Peregrine Falcon! The only owls that go 'twit twoo' are Tawny owls and even then you usually have to have a pair to get the' twit' and the 'twoo'! The majority of our owls are not nocturnal! Female birds of prey are up to 1/3 larger than the males! And did you know we actually have up to twenty native birds or prey in the UK plus the odd visiting species? This is why one of The Raptor Trust's areas of work is Education, the other two being rehabilitation and conservation. We visit and do educational talks and can cater to almost any group including schools, youth clubs, photographic group (and the odd womens institute?) as well as attending events such as The Spring Fling and The Norfolk Show using our own captive bred birds of prey. We are a network of volunteers across Norfolk, (and some of Suffolk) with a helpline so that we can arrange to collect injured, ill or orphaned birds of prey. These are usually Little owls, Tawny owls, Barn owls and Kestrels with the odd Buzzard or Sparrowhawk, or sometimes we even get a rarer bird such as an Osprey, Hobby or Merlin. For example are you aware that in Bowthorpe there are a breeding pair of Sparrowhawks, Little owls, several pairs of Kestrels whose hunting territory includes Bowthorpe, and in neighbouring villages Tawny owls and even a breeding pair of Goshawks! For more information or to follow our work you can find us at; www.raptortrust.org.uk , on Facebook, via [email protected] or via our

but the rain held off, and the evening was glorious.

Over 80 people came along to join in our packed programme, starting with storytelling in the morning, with all the children listening enrapt to our storyteller, Ruth Bennett.

This was followed by ceilidh dancing, thanks to Chris Davis and his folk musician mates who clearly enjoyed themselves as much as everyone who took to the floor – or rather the much improved paved area in front of the Ruin.

Music-making, dancing and singing continued throughout the afternoon, fuelled by refreshments supplied by our indefatigable helpers, including Louise, Jenny, Jo, Paul, Freddie, Mark and Sally, with Chris ever helpful on the door.

More formally, a special thank you to Louise and Norwich City Council for helping us to get the Red Nose Day Community Cash. And to the West Norwich Lions for sponsoring our advert on the Bowthorpe News cover, featuring this year’s stunning innovation of the dramatic floodlighting of the Ruin, also masterminded by Chris Davis, whose guitar-playing helped make it such a magical evening.

Yet again our historic community hub came into its own, and thanks to the generous donations of those who came along we gained £280+ to help maintain and preserve this precious core of our heritage for the future.

DAY

Once again, this year, as Chair of the St Michael’s Ruin Trust I’d like to say a big thank you to every-one involved in making our recent Heritage Open Day such a great success.

The weather was more mixed than last year,

David George, a trainee at St. Michael’s Workshop, donated this magnificent cast of Noah for auction on the day. It is a replica of the roof boss in Norwich cathedral. It was made and given to the Workshop by Oliver Creed, and David painted it during the last year. THANK YOU DAVID!
