The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter913, Branson, in 2013 put together a plan tobring a memorial to Branson honoring the 1,410heroes from Missouri who gave the ultimate inVietnam.

We first searched to see if the state ofMissouri already had a memorial dedicated tothe whole state. After finding that there was nota state-sanctioned memorial, we began havingmeetings with our state representatives and statesenators.

We met with State Representatives Jeff Justusand Don Phillips and State Senator David Saterto begin the process. They assisted in getting thebill passed through the House and Senate with-out objections. So with Branson being designat-ed as the only state-sanctioned location, webegan the search for a location.

We went to the College of the Ozarks andspoke to Dr. Davis, President of the College, tosee if they had a parcel of land that could bedonated for this project. A major fundraiserwould have to be done to accomplish this task, with no guarantee that we would be successful.

When the College of the Ozarks was namedthe beneficiary of the Legends of Golf tourna-ment, Dr. Davis informed us that the collegewould not only supply the land, but would alsopay for the construction of the memorial.Dedication of this great tribute is scheduled forApril 22, 2015 at 2:30 p.m.

Thank you, College of the Ozarks, for yourgenerosity and patriotism.

The Branson Veterans Task Force (BVTF)opened its first meeting of 2015 by welcom-

ing new board members Steve Baughan, TammySlentz, Amber Campbell, Rich Crowell, SherrieSchnapp, Nick Ambegia and Kristina Gilbert to itsranks. The board also re-elected Chairperson BrendaMeadows and Mike Yates as vice chair.

Meadows said 2015 is going to be a strong yearfor area veterans and those who visit Branson.

“The task force is focusing on highlightingBranson’s heart towards honoring and welcomingveterans, active-duty personnel and all of their fam-ilies,” she said. “This board has more members thanwe’ve had in the past few years and all of us want towork together to create an atmosphere where all vet-erans feel the love here and are comfortable, as wellas entertained.”

Yates said all of the people chosen to serve on theboard have done previous work for the task force.

Gilbert said she had volunteered at BVTF eventsthroughout 2014 and sees being a board member asan opportunity to do more.

“I am a very proud wife of a retired airman, daughter of an Air Force veteran, daughter-in-law ofa Navy veteran, sister of a retired Navy submarinerand mom to a serving Army soldier,” she said. “Ilove the idea that whatever time I can give is helpingreach as many veterans as possible and letting themknow how much I appreciate their service.”

Yates said that the board has chosen some “verygood people.”

“I think we’re going to have more of a can-do atti-tude in 2015 than we’ve had in the past with man-agement backgrounds in our board members — thatin itself will accomplish a lot for the board,” he said.

Crowell, who is the general manager of GoldenCorral, said joining the task force board was a per-fect fit for him.

“Every Monday (during Veterans Homecoming)from 5-9 p.m., we offer a free meal for veterans ... soI’ve been working with veterans a long time,” saidCrowell, who has been involved with the task forcefor several years, but just joined the board this year.“I love our veterans and the task force has been verysupportive of them over the years. Branson is thegreatest city in the country for our veterans and itjust seemed like the perfect fit.”

Crowell said the community should expect a lot ofgreat things from the task force in the coming year.

“They are amazing people that support our com-munity and really care about our veterans,” he said.“It makes you feel good to help an amazing organi-zation. Without our vets, we wouldn’t be here andwouldn’t have our freedom. They are the trueheroes.”

Along with board members Meadows and Yates, the new members join existing members PamBrown, Ernie Bradley, Julie Peters, June Tillis andRich Watson.

Meadows said the task force board would misstreasurer Greg Schnapp who recently retired, mainlydue to health problems. She said the 10 years he ded-icated to the task force benefited the community aswell as veterans. The board presented him a plaqueand a gift certificate.

BRANSON VETERANS TASK FORCE

For more than a decade the Branson Veterans TaskForce (BVTF) has been facilitating events and help-ing create a homecoming atmosphere that welcomes, honors and respects all of America’s heroes — vet-erans and active duty military personnel.

There are several veterans on our board, whichgives the BVTF more insight to the experiences andsituations veterans, (stateside or in foreign countries,in peace time or war) might have gone through. Withthis personal information available to us, we canprovide the answers veterans, local or visiting, ask.

One way we serve those who have served us is toprovide them the resources they need.

If there is a reunion that needs a bugler, a chaplain,or a list of service groups, we will provide that infor-mation. Or call us to get directions to the VA clinic, information about the area, a way to connect with

other veterans or just someone to talk with. If wedon’t know the answer to a question, we will find itand call you back. We are here for you.

Branson is a comfortable place where veteransfeel appreciated. And that’s another thing we do —we appreciate you. As a matter of fact, Branson likesto be thought of as the place where all veterans feelright at home. And coming here is a homecoming ofsorts, which is why the BVTF is very activelyinvolved in the annual November 5-11 VeteransWeek, your “Welcome Home Week.”

Make sure you give us a call or look us up whenyou come to Branson or if you are just thinkingabout visiting here.

Remember, we are “family” and Branson is“home.”

Disabled American Veterans Chapter68 and Auxiliary Unit 68 have bothgrown in membership by over 60% thispast year and received commendationfrom the Missouri DAV State Departmentfor our record setting growth.

When Auxiliary Commander MaryCummings was asked about why so muchgrowth, she stated, “the persistent hardwork of our member volunteers helpinglocal veterans is a great cause and theword gets around. Many local veteransand their families have jumped on board

to help their comrades in need.”In the past year our DAV vans have driv-

en over 40,000 miles and transported over400 veterans to their VA Hospital appoint-ments in Missouri and Arkansas at no cost tothemselves. This past year our DAV ServiceOfficers at no charge have given guidanceand/or submitted claims to the Departmentof Veteran Affairs for disability compensa-tion for over 900 veterans who were injuredor suffer an illness acquired while serving inthe US Military during a time of conflict orwar. $2,000 directly to veterans in emergencyfunds. Our Auxiliary also supports the Mt.Vernon Missouri Veterans Home withnumerous visits, organized bingo, books fortheir library, lap blankets, donated wheel-chairs and Christmas presents for all.

The success of the Branson Veterans TaskForce’s Veterans Village, shootout, resourcecenter and referrals to visiting veterans andtheir families is not because of the devotedboard members.

Although we do work together to plan eventsthat welcome veterans to Branson to make themfeel honored and at home, the real heartbeat ofthis city comes by doing and giving.

The real success in saying ‘Welcome Home’comes through volunteers and sponsors thatmake it all happen. These are the ones that puttheir hearts and dollars to work for Branson, areal welcoming committee. Their actions areproof that success in laying out the welcomemat takes more than words. Once in a while, we are blessedto witness a moment so priceless, itbecomes etched in our memory for-ever. I was blessed enough to wit-ness just such a moment. It wasn’tplanned, and no one could haveanticipated the impact it wouldhave on all of us.

Every year, Branson VeteransEvents & Reunions hosts a mini-reunion for the men and women whoserved in the Korean War. This yearwe gathered at the Stone Castle Innand Conference Center, but so did aforeigner and his family. He wasKorean, born and raised. He hadcome to the United States with hisfamily to study journalism, and hehad come to Branson to meet up witha veteran he had met not long beforethe event. However, he soon discov-ered that while his veteran friend wasnot there, there was an entire room ofveterans who had fought in Korea somany years ago. His joy and enthusi-asm led him to address the entireroom. He stood there, bowed to them, and went on to thank them for fight-

ing for him, for his family. He saidthat America may call Korea “the for-gotten war,” but Korea remembers.

Korea remembers the brave menand women of the United Statesfighting for them, and for savingthem. His humble and sincere grati-tude spoke volumes. He walkedaround the room shaking their hands, and taking pictures, because to himand his family these veterans areheroes in every sense of the word.

In his eyes these men left the com-forts of their homes, went to a foreignland, and fought a war that was nottheir own. They had defended theweak, oppressed, and at the end of theday, some of them gave their lives sothat this young man could grow up toappreciate what these American G.I.’shad given for him and his country. The pride I feel for these veteransmade my heart swell to the point myeyes leaked. I am honored to callthese women and men, brothers andsisters. I am honored to call them myfellow countrymen. I am honored tocall them American soldiers.

Each of the nearly 100 American flags displayed alongGretna Road rests a placard bearing the name of a vet-

eran, first responder or present day warrior. Army veteranTom Goldsworthy, representing the Branson Veterans TaskForce (BVTF), has dedicated the past 13 years to placing theflags on the poles along what is known as “The Avenue ofFreedom.” He has fervently watched the 1.5 miles of per-sonalized memorials, making sure they fly without incidentand all placards remain in place, as well as two weather-resistant flags flying from each light pole in the center ofGretna Road.

Branson’s Board of Aldermen sanctioned the Avenue ofFreedom on Nov. 14, 2001. It was designated to honorUnited States veterans who gave their lives for freedom andfor those who died from terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001(9/11). It is supported by donations.

When Goldsworthy receives donations from individuals, organizations and businesses, he orchestrates the placementof each flag, which is flown for 90 days, from the weekbefore Memorial Day until the week after Veterans Day.

When each flag is “retired” it is shipped to a designatedrecipient complete with a personalized certificate.

“People that make a donation to have the flags flown actu-ally come (to Branson) and look for those flags,”Goldsworthy said. “The person who orders the flag is notalways the person that gets the flag. Some buy them for rel-atives that served and some buy them in honor of friendsthat served.”

Goldsworthy recalled one gentleman who bought flagsfor the school he had attended.

“He bought a flag for each branch of military service thatstudents have served in,” he said. “Then he took the flags tothe school, where they are on display in memory of all thekids that were in the military. There were students thatserved in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, etc.”

Recently Goldsworthy told the BVTF that his healthrequires that he give up maintaining the Avenue of Freedom.Goldsworthy quickly reminds those who would applaudhim for his dedication to the Avenue, that he has had help.

Among those committed to the cause is Randy Brott fromSudden Link who supplies the lift truck needed to place theflags on the poles that are the property of Empire Electric.

“It takes four people to put them up and over time therehave been numerous volunteers,” Goldsworthy said.“They are both veterans and non-veterans.”

Vietnam veteran Mike Yates, a member of the VietnamVeterans of America Chapter 913 and vice-chair of theBVTF, said Goldsworthy has dedicated much of his lifeto the Avenue of Freedom.

“The Avenue of Freedom has become a city landmarkthat is talked about by visitors and locals,” he said. “Tomhas negotiated five-year contracts with the city ofBranson for that space along Gretna Road. In all kinds ofweather he put flags up and took them down, spent count-less hours folding them, placed certificates with them andmailed them to the people who have sponsored them.”

Goldsworthy is passing the “Avenue of Freedom torch”to dedicated area veterans and volunteers. He will be aconsultant to Yates, who will oversee maintenance of theAvenue of Freedom.

“We, the citizens of Branson, owe Tom a debt of grat-itude,” Yates said.

Flags along the Avenue, and their maintenance, canbe sponsored for a donation of $50 each or any amount

above $50 to the Branson Veterans Task Force. Call417-337-8387 or visit www.BransonVeterans.com tosponsor a flag or volunteer to help maintain the Avenueof Freedom.

Conner Wiggins (13) of Memphis,Missouri, was inducted into StudentPatriots Hall of Honor during the BransonVeterans Events & Reunions OpeningCeremonies at the Branson Star Theatre.

She has been sending personally signed“homemade” cards and letters to troopssince she could walk ... doing so to honorthese men and women who have given somuch in service to our beloved America. Her message of appreciation contains apersonal note of interesting things in herlife and how the recipient might relate.

Then Conner decided to do the same forveterans when she learned about theimportance of “Veterans Day.”

So, now her cards go out on Veteran’sDay, Christmas, Valentine’s Day andEaster. What originally started as a 4-Hproject continues to grow every year withover 800 personal greetings in cards sentjust to veterans in 2013. She also visitsveterans at the Veterans’ Homes for theAged, a homeless shelter ... bringing themcards and small gifts including gentlyused clothing for those in need.

Moreover, Conner Wiggins decidedabout two years ago to do more for veter-

ans ... designing “patriotic badges” (withthe help of her mother) to pass out to vet-erans. These badges are all handmadewith bottle caps.

Inside the cap is a printed messagethanking the veteran for their service. They also use colored card stock that hasbeen punched out into various designsand attached to the cap. It doesn’t have tobe a special day — they readily have them

in their pock-ets and givethem out —even in super-markets.

Through thiseffort, she wasencouraged to makeher statement national.Conner is now registeredat Fort Riley in Kansas withher own brand ... “Conner’sCause”... which has becomeknown nationally.

She made 2,000 Conner’sCause badges to proudly pres-ent to each veteran that she metduring her visit to Veterans Week2014 in Branson ... starting with theopening ceremony honoring veter-ans on November 5, 2014, at theBranson Star Theatre. It is also whereshe was surprised on November 5, 2014,with the presentation of her very deserv-ing induction into the Student PatriotsHall of Honor and receiving her certifi-cate from David Bancroft, USAPatriotism Founder.

Her proud reason for doing so... “Ournation is free because of their bravery.”
