Hey guys!

As the aftershocks of the A(H1N1) epidemic continues to hit and affect usall, Breakeven has decided to join in the craze (nakikiuso lang). Sure

A(H1N1) has affected the normal lives of people, orgs and companies butit is still important that we do not let the virus destroy our will to do

everything and hinder us from giving 100% of what we are.

The production of this issue was also affected by the effects of theepidemic but rest be assured that none of the virus is incorporated

within these pages. Hahaha, safe ang Breakeven na ito. Read it, enjoy itand love it! The staffers contributed so much to make this issue possible!

Remember always that prevention is better than cure (hahaha, nagrip-offpa mula sa commercial) Hope that everyone is well and stays that way!

Tapos na anghuling A(H1N1) outbreak sa UP.

At iba pangBukas!

HAHAHA! Naks! Anyway, enough of the Emostuff.

paano siguro’y may naantig akong damdamin. ☺

I also want to commend themembers who exerted a lot of effort to make thingshappen. From Acads, to Exte, to Fin, to Pub, toAd hoc, to Breakeven, all of you did a tremendousjob! Keep it up!

Hahaha! Bagomakapag-defer, kelangan ilibre muna ako ngdinner! Warning: Malakas ako kumain atmamumulubi kayo. Haha! Anyway, pagpatuloyniyo lang! I love you all!!!

Let’s all make OBEM ’09-‘10 the best OBEM ever!We can do this if we start now. Dare to be Bold!Dare to be an OBEMer!

Hello all!

Almost half the semester may be over, but weare just beginning to embark on our journey ofstress. Joke lang! HAHA! The rest of thesemester seems stressful and full of pressurebecause of academics (exams and THESIS!!!)and extra-curricular activities (OBEM events, SEactivities, love life/lives, etc.) going on. I hopeeveryone is still alive and doing well.

To the most stressed people I know,Execomm: WE CAN DO THIS!!! Hahaha. Allthose late-night meetings and debates overdecision making just to make an event possiblewill soon pay-off. As my marketing professor says,“Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Jay: Thankyou for being a friend, thesis partner, love andlife adviser, driver, taga-ubos ng aking dinner, kulang na lang lover. HAHA! I’m just here if youneed me. Topher: Thank you for yourkasabawan. HAHA! I am so proud of how you’rehandling ACADS. Kudos and Godspeed in thenext events. Via: Beat that stress! I know howpassionate you are in EXTE’s events.Congratulations on all the successful freebiesyou’ve been getting. Frankly, your team makesmarketing easier for ADHOC. Godspeed! EJ:Thank you for staying sane. HAHA! I know howmuch you and FIN exerted your efforts just tomake money for OBEM. KAYA PA YAN. Sabi konaman sayo, sometimes miracles do happen.FRED: Don’t worry, Jay and I still love you kahitkami lagi ang hindi naka-tamang color ng t-shirt.HAHA! Keep that energy and friendliness thatINTE has. Sana maraming magaling na apps!Woohoo. Chan: Thank you for the suggestionsand comments you give, most of them makesense, some medyo sabaw ka na ata. HAHA!Be an inspiration to PUB!

Diagnosis:acadsMembers! First sem’s half down and I hopeeveryone is doing well. :)

In my previous commnews, I promised the Academicscommittee will be at its finest. I assured you that Acadswill rock the foundations of the committee. Indeed, it’shappening *clap clap!* Members, let me present toyou my SONA as your VP for Academic Affairs.

1. Last June, we graced the sem with Book-SwapProject. We abolished the age-old book rentals in orderto recognize the role of Acads more of being anintermediary for members lending and borrowing booksrather than a profiting one. Thanks members, it wassuccessful. Many of our books which could’ve just sleptin our closets are now used by fellow OBEMers, at nocost. Congratulations to its PC for the wonderful idea,Pat! Expect us to refine this service into perfection bysecond semester :)

2. We also abolished the traditional way of borrowingfrom our samplex collection. Now you can sign-up thedemand sheet and the samplex will delivered to you.Amazing! We are renovating the samplex locker, trashing the obsolete samplex-es, and organizing ourfolders. This would not be possible without your helpthrough our fundraisers, the Book-Covering project andthe Roving Piggy Bank. Congratulations PCs Andrew,Ciara, and Lalet!

3. We gave you one of the most exciting ACLE ever. You rediscovered coffee through top of the coffeeindustry speakers we had. You saw the two sides ofcoffee: the industry-relevant side and the fun side. Itwas an achievement to serve free coffee and snacksin an ACLE. Thanks for the hard work andcongratulations PCs Lalet, Marielle, and Trinka! Hahaha! Indeed I was never wrong entrusting you theACLE. I’m so proud of you! :)

KUDOS OBEM! I want tocongratulate our organization for a jobwell done so far! After months ofanticipating for this year’s start ofOBEM with us as Execomm, here weare, almost halfway this semesteralready. As I expected, the ride I’veundergone so far as your ExternalAffairs Vice-President hasn’t beeneasy. The challenge to juggle all theupcoming big events of the externalscommittee, getting the membersinvolved in it, while in the process ofcontinually trying to improve myselfcould have its toll sometimes, however, more importantly , I ammore than happy and honored to begiven this chance to serve a GREATorganization such as OBEM.

Now that Break-Even has yetagain provided me a means to voiceout my sentiments to you my co-members, I’d like to take thisopportunity to share to you just whyI’m so blessed to have you guys.

The events we’ll be pursuing this semesterare no easy tasks, and I speak it so under mycommittee’s experience, whose events are allnew and somehow ambitious. Being in theforefront and leading these events arefrightening, honestly saying, considering all thepossible risks involved in pursing it. But morethan the risks and the possible failures we mightencounter, my faith in my committee membersand in OBEM is far more encompassing than allthe negativities I could ever think of. I amastounded and continually amazed as I work withthe people I’ve had the chance to work with (youknow who you are guys!). Not only is the successof our events (yes, I’m claiming it already!) mymeasure of judgement, but more importantly, it’sthese people’s HOPE and the SPIRIT ofPASSION to make the event possible that’s justoverwhelming me every time. So far in our Mixerevent, we’ve been blessed with sponsors andwith good people we’ve met along the way. I oweit all to God, and to the positive vibes and spiritof the whole Mixer team! Congratulations Guys!As for Partake Campaign Team and to the PartyTeam, we’re progressing faster than I could everimagine, and with that, let’s continue movingsmoothly, and let’s ignite our passion to produceone hell of a good party! ☺ I have no doubt thatwe can pull this of beyond our expectations!

OBEM, you are GREAT! I say this so withall conviction and with all faith! I just want toremind you that we are AMAZING, and with ourefforts and the pool of talents that we have, wecan make a BIG difference.

Let’s not lose the FLAME! Let’s DREAM,BELIEVE, and let’s Make it Happen! (Kala nyosurvive no? hahahah!)

With much love and admiration,

For years, Fred has been experiencing money shortage. Heused the Chinese people, as he described them as “Tipid na tipid,nag-eexcel pa sa acads “, as motivation. As he deprives himselffrom pleasure and money spending, there is no other place that itled him to but the hospital. Of much deprivation, he lost his appetiteand his ability to digest food and alcohol smoothly causing him tolose a piece of his happiness. After his hospitalization, he has oneadvice for everyone: “Live a healthy life,” and he now lives this out.

Many of us wonder on how he budgets his time and be able todo all responsibilities. He admits that he never had calendar ofdeadlines, never experienced very good study habits and has notattended seminars of time management. And yet, he does well. Hehas been keeping one stealthy ingredient that keeps him in theconstancy of accomplishment. This secret refers to the ability ofchoosing one right extra-curricular activity. Choosing anaccompanying activity that you think will reap the most benefitsand the largest development for you, is an influential factor of self-maturity. He has chosen one and he has continually been givinghis utmost effort to his extra activity. He firmly believes that peopleare born imperfect and that this life is a journey to perfection. Hedoes his works silently and just seems like he is not doing it. Peoplemay think that by the way he works, he doesn’t meet certain quality. But that is where people get wrong. He is not the kind of man thatloudly tells “I’ve done this.”, “I’ve done that.” He just does his joband meets deadlines. Together with his studies and extra activities,he does not forget to show and give his care for the family. Hecurrently lives away from home for easy access to school but hedoesn’t forget to visit once in a while to continuously show andgive his care to the family. And to his friends, he may be out ofplace by now because he limits himself from alcohol, but that doesn’thinder him from maintaining a good relationship with other people.

With his almost four years of thriving studies and vibrant socialand family life, he does not yet consider his self as successful. Why so is because he thinks that one is successful if he has alreadydeveloped his attitude and wholly loves what he is doing- and Mr.Fred has not fully developed and loved his. With all the things thathe has been through, he is able to presume that “Success is not asingle point in time, it is a journey.” And like what he read from abook, success has neither climax nor a denouement. There’s justthe steady climb to the top. And for the people that travel the journeyof success, just like him, this is what he wanted to say: “In ourlives we must set an impossible goal. As we stick to that goal, wepursue it at all costs. That pursuit is the journey. The “success” youmay encounter are just milestones, just stops in the journey. Asyou go along, you slowly reach that ultimate stop, but you realizethat it’s not going to happen. You slowly fall back, but you persevere. As you grow old, you realize that dream is impossible and you giveup. You think you are a failure, but as you look back you might saysomething similar to this, “Woah. Did I do that?””

But you just did.

“Like people in our life, opportunities comeand go. So once it strikes, go and grab it. “

In the years we knew her, this principle inlife has been evident in her every move. Nosingle opportunity has passed her without evengrabbing it. She grabs opportunities to lead, toserve, to help, and even the opportunity to love. And NOTHING can stop her. Being at the highestposition of one of the most prestigiousorganizations in the Philippines, Junior PhilippineEconomic Society, we highly look upon her.Having on her shoulders the responsibility ofbeing the chair; it has not been easy on her part. But before she grabbed the opportunity of leadingthe entire organization, she knew all About theobligations that she will be dealing with. With allthe acads and extra-curricular stuffs, she isdefinitely a great time manager. And she believesthat being able to manage one’s time wisely is askill that can be learned through constantpractice. Everyone may regard her to be someserious type of girl at first. But, little did we knowthat she is exactly the opposite of what weperceive of her. She may seem to look serious, but there is a loud part of her.

For people who want to be like her, the secretfor being such is by knowing what you want. SheKNOWS what she WANTS. She just enjoys andloves her work and believes that everything willfollow. She also believes that when you do thingsout of passion, you subtly become inspiration toother people. And that’s the way she leads—byexample. To the young minds of our organizationand other youth of today, she has this advice:“Love your work. Do it with passion. Give yourbest. Serve before you lead. In the end, you willinspire people in the least way you can think of.Good luck and grab all the opportunities that willbe given to you.”

RONA MAE FREDERICK

Chinese are known for being business –mindedpeople. They spend less yet they earn a lot. They arealso one of the most intelligent, practical I may say, people in the planet. But why are we talking aboutChinese here? Simple, for the reason that, Chineseare Fred’s role models.

I would like take this opportunity to thank (thankand congratulate mo rin sila ha) my directorsfor a good job this first half. To Marc, Vhet andKitkat, congratulations to a wonderfulSemStarter! I commend you three for a verygood job even with little assistance from me.Though you’ve experienced problems, remember that there is light at the end of thetunnel. Blame it on A(h1n1). LOL! To Ruffy, Zion,Migs and Gianna, I’m impressed with thecomeback of the LGC. Although we may haveencountered a few setbacks, don’t give up.Think positive! Hwag kayong aayaw! To all ofyou, keep up the good work that you’ve shownwith the applicants and especially with themembers. Don’t forget what I asked you to do.Hehe. To Marc and Vhet, take good care of yourapplicants. To Ruffy, Zion, Migs and Gianna, behappy and be gay with your committee. Andwhen I mean “gay”, it still means happy. Hehe.To Secretary Kitkat… Hmmm… chill ka langmuna. LOL! Value your stay as Internals, youstill have half the sem left. Don’t cry yet. I’m notleaving until I graduate. Nyahaha! =)

“Together, we can.” Now I know the man whospoke of those great words – Justin Batocabe. In fairness to the man, he knows his words. However I confess that this is easy to say thando. It may be hard, but it is essential. We’veentered this organization taught of this phrase,“Minamahal ang pinaghihirapan.” In English, welove the things that we’ve worked hard for (sanatama ang translation. haha!). However thisphrase does not only apply to the applicationprocess or the work that we do in OBEM. Thisapplies to you, to me, to your directors and toyour Execom. Be bold and reach out. Be boldand let Unity thrive. It may be an arduouschallenge, but hey, minamahal angpinaghihirapan.

P.S. Hahaha.

To God, thank you for a wonderful first half. Thankyou talaga! Bless OBEM and bless its members.Everything we do, we offer it to you.

Hey OBEMer!

How are you doing? Well you might say you’restressed about our upcoming activities, or you maybecrying because you failed one of your midterms. However, you might also say that you are happy, justlike me! LOL! But hey, whatever is happening to youmy friend don’t fidget and just relax. Chill lang pre.

Tough times are approaching; though they mayalready have arrived. We have already facedchallenges over the first half of the semester. To citea few, we’ve experienced one of the greatestchallenges of our time – the swine flu epidemic. Yes,we panicked. All of us did. We even thought of banningyou from hanging out in the tambayan. Don’t think ofit as a crime against democracy. It was all in the nameof containing the disease and protecting you. It wasalas a troubling time. So you my friend, take careand live healthy. You don’t know how important youare.

Enough about swine flu and let’s talk about you. Thankyou for giving your full support to this organization.OBEM wouldn’t have been like this if it were not fromyour countless efforts in bringing this organizationtowards greatness. We’ve started this semester bysaying that we should be bold in our endeavors. Thankyou for not being too literal about it. I haven’t seenanyone running around naked yet. LOL. Though on aserious note, the semester hasn’t ended yet, thus letus still pursue to be BOLD.

May H5N1, H2N2, H3N2, H1N1, at marami pang iba.

She left the country with the legacy that will forever liveon. During the days of her wake, members Marcos family andArroyo and her administration allies visited not because ofpolitical conflict but of peaceful commiseration. This just signifiesthat until Cory died, she has always been able to unite people.Days passed, now comes her interment. On this day, historyrepeated itself. Almost a million of people gathered onceagain to show their respect and honor to the former presidentfor one last time. Yellow, being ex-president Aquino’s famouscolor symbol, filled the entire city streets and main roads. Ithas not just become her personal symbol but the nation’ssymbol of new hope. Having left the nation with two children

as public figures, she left the responsibility tothem to continue what she and Ninoy had

started. On the necrological servicesoffered to her, she was remembered

to be a mother of democracy, acaring mother to her children, a loving friend, a true family and

an advocate of peace. She hasadvised her children to take

care of one another but this didnot seem to be just an adviceto her children but to allFilipinos as well. A striking line

saying, “The Filipinos are worth it”, was also uttered during the

services. With her death, Filipinosrealized how important she is and

what she has done. One of her familymembers also said that Cory’s priority

is God first and second, the country. Familyis just the third. That’s how huge and true her

love for the country is.

Undoubtedly, the Philippines lost a true Filipino. Losingher does not make an end to everything. It actually gives usthe hope to start a new and better beginning. Making ex-president Cory Aquino as our inspiration to each of ourendeavor and undertaking, we can assure a sound success.Better yet, we can be an example for other people. Do weneed another death for us to realize that the Filipinos areworth it? We could actually be united, if we just wanted to.History has provided us with several eye-openers. They aremore than enough to serve as reasons for us to act now. Anation’s asset is its people. The one who can build the nation isits people. It is us who can make this country a better, richerand bolder nation.

“Corazon Aquino died August 1, 2009at 3:18 in the morning. That’s 08-01-20093:18. Remove the 0’s and put the numberstogether. That results to 8-1-29 318.Rearrange the numbers and it may resultto 8-21-1983. That’s August 21, 1983- the dayNinoy died. Coincidence? I say TRUE LOVE.”

This is an up to date widely spread textmessage. It has amazed a number of peopleand some are still on disbelief. However, thismessage doesn’t matter as much as whatCorazon ‘Cory’ Aquino has done for thenation. Her death was really a turning pointfor every Filipino around the globe. There may be youth who weren’table to witness how she retrieveddemocracy for the people buther memory will surely pass fromgeneration to generation.Twenty three years back, she has gathered millions of peopleto fight and regain power anddemocracy from the Marcosregime. Successfully, she waselected to be the next president.Starting her term, she promisedthe people to have their freedomof speech and freedom of action-true democracy I may say. Sixyears of presidency, she has foughtfor what is right and for what is true. She had no intentions of making her termlonger than what is expected. She believedthat true democracy is the peaceful transferof power. She had stayed on the side of theadministration until the “Hello Garci” tapeissue. With this election scandal, she becamein favor a subtle opposing of the Arroyogovernment. In addition, she was also insupport for the fight against the NBN ZTE

1. ACT BOLD ENOUGH. Don’t showyour passivity and weaknesses topeople. This doesn’t mean youpretend that you can doeverything. Just act as if you areto look firm and resilient. If before, you don’t share your thoughts, perhaps now is the time. Get outof your box and explore thebigger picture.

As what Michael Schenker, aGerman heavy metal guitarist, would say, “I believe that everyperson has uniqueness - somethingthat nobody else has.” Right! It’s notenough that we do things that weused to do. It’s also not enough tobe the person we used to be. Nowis the time for us to get out of whatwe were and rediscover our ownself. HERE is what to do:

2. MAKE A BOLD FIRST MOVE. Ask yourfriends out. If you think you haven’tdone things for a bit long time, startdoing them again. Start a conversationand be ready to make friends. Wearyour witty smile wherever your feet bringyou. Get away with ordinary jeans andshirt, but search your closet and startyour trend.

4. ASK YOURSELF THE BOLDQUESTION: WHAT DO IWANT?” Knowing what youtruly want can help you indetermining the ways onhow you can achieve them.Without any goals in life, youcan never achievesomething. If you want toexcel in your studies, makeefforts. Study. If you want topay back your parents, make them proud. Thinkbefore you act. Havingknown what you want, itleads you to the question ofhow do you get to what youwant.

3. DO BOLD AND UNPREDICTABLE THINGS. Thisdoesn’t mean you cover for maturemagazines or make sexy videos. This simplysays do what you haven’t done before. Tryto engage yourself in sports, music, dance,or anything you think you will enjoy and canmake your extra time worth spending.

Identifying what you want, taking risks, discovering yourself, they are all parts of the travel tobeing BOLD. You just have to believe in what you can do. It doesn’t matter whether others can do ittoo or not. You just have to do everything in the best way you can. After all, it’s you, not them.

Be the best. Be BOLD.

6. DISCOVER A BOLDER YOU. On the journeyto what you want, you’ll come to a pointthat you discover more of yourself. You willfind out that there are things you can dothat you never imagined that you can. These things make you different from others. There are certain things that it’s only you thatcan do it- may it be in music, dance, arts, socializing, academics and all other partsof growth.

5. TAKE BOLD RISKS. Along theway, in getting to what you want, you will often need to take bigrisks or big decisions. Never beafraid to take risks and grabopportunities along the way. They are all part of life. These bigrisks will definitely teach you onhow to decide next time. It’sexpected that we fail, but itdoesn’t actually matter. Thetimes that we stand up again arewhat really matters. Takeproblems down and never letthem to be the one to take youdown.

Can’t lose controlI have no right to lose sight of my goal.

I have staked my soul,My mind, my heart, my all

People tell me that the end’s full of obscurityI answer them with words of profanity.

Even if God sends his herculean rainAnd the sun’s effort goes in vain

I will not complainIf in return, I can hold your hand again.

For sure I will see the red lightBut I will step on the gas no matter what.

While relishing the ‘could be’I’ll shift my gear up so fervently.

And behind the steering wheel, I will stayEven if it takes me forever, and a day

I don’t give a damn if there’s no finish lineAs long as I’m guided by the moonshine,

Our fates are intertwined. And in time,

I know your heart will be mine.

My bitter friend

Every date on it sheds off cheer

How everyone is excited to reach the end

I try not to exist

I wish I have a chance with reality

To freeze time and leave my friend

With every second past

I come with fear doubled

Nothing is well this July

Broken ties refuse to mend

Not even resolved, another one will separate

No one even knows

Secret illness will pass

To those who are vulnerable

Done with no debts

Assurance to visit

It’s like a poisonous cycle

With different stages

It will make you expect to be cured

But it’s just progressing

How could I leave my friend

If it has remained faithful to me?

Without it I am less

Beside it I grow weak

I need you now, I really doIt’s been a month and two weeks subtract that from a year

I feel so alone now and hopeless,

I want to hear you at leastBut aeven that you can’t grant me

I only want to tell you how much I miss your company

How much you brighten me up by your presence

And now you’re goneYou’re voice I couldn’t hear,

Your presence I couldn’t feelI’m just alone and afraid staying by myself

I’m scared of the things that I’m thinking now,

If you only knowI don’t know how much I can hold it

I’m not strong enough like I thought I was

Any moment now I want to let go
