Note from the EditorHello Beaverton and welcome to the summer that should have been here weeks ago! Sure it was a lit-tle slow in coming but we at Cedar House Media feel that it was well worth the wait. What are we wait-ing for you ask? Well, take a look inside this issue of the directory where you’ll find information on outdoor activities, wineries, the farmers market and more. Or how about visiting a park this summer where on any given week you can find free outdoor movies, concerts and even live performances. But the best of all has got to be the Beaverton Celebration Day on August 27th. Yes, this is the new day for the pa-rade but surrounding that will be a full day of music, art, food, activities, the Old Town Festival and much, much more. So as you’re flipping through this issue, note the community calendar on page 3, but also read about our local non-profits, visit a small business and most of all, enjoy the summer!
Sincerely yours,
Cory Burden Owner of Cedar House Media (and long time Beaverton resident)

Those who live, work and play in Beaverton are just minutes
away from some of Oregon’s most beloved attractions and things to do. From well-known wineries and acclaimed restaurants to state-of-the-art golf and tranquil outdoor spaces, there are plenty of places to explore in your own backyard.
Tualatin Hills Nature Park and Cooper Mountain Nature Park are just two of the peaceful outdoor recreational areas that transport you away from the hustle and bus-tle of the suburbs. These two parks are open to the public, are free of charge and provide an escape from the everyday and whisk visitors to the natural beauty of the area.
From breathtaking views to the sweet smell of locally produced wine, Ponzi Vineyards and Cooper Mountain Vineyards, both located in southwestern Beaverton, are two of Washington County’s nearly 30 wineries. Open daily, these two winery tasting rooms are popular among locals and visitors alike, and pour varietals such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and more.
Beaverton’s dining scene is tak-ing off, and has captured the atten-tion of locals, as well as Portland-ers, looking for local fine-dining restaurants. Decarli, located in downtown Beaverton, and the ven-erable Hall St. Grill, located near Cedar Hills Crossing, are two local restaurants that are pleasing din-ers with their inventive dishes and luscious wine and cocktail selec-tions.
RedTail Golf Center (formerly Progress Downs) has been a Bea-verton staple for decades; how-ever, what many may not know is that RedTail uses state-of-the-art technology in its teaching pro-grams. This instructional technolo-gy is used to help improve golfers’ swings, while potentially lowering scores and enhancing the overall enjoyment of golf. This 7,100-yard, championship 18-hole course is the perfect place to spend a sunny, summer day.
These are just a sampling of the many things to see and do in your own backyard. To learn more about the attractions in Beaverton, as well as throughout all of Wash-ington County, check out www.Vis-itWashingtonCountyOregon.com.

Solving a problem as large and complex as climate change certainly doesn’t have a single answer. The
Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District is doing its part, however, with a program aimed at reducing costs, improving the quality of life for district residents, and reducing environmental impacts. THPRD has formed a staff sustainability committee responsible for coordinating projects across all district departments. Bruce Barbarasch, the district’s superintendent of Natural Resources and Trails Management, co-chairs the task force.“We look at all the things we buy and all the ways we function as a district and try to streamline the process to make us better stewards of the earth,” Barbarasch said. The Park District launched an in-house Sustainable Practices Program in 2005 that documented existing sustainable practices, investigated the use of recycled products, and started a recycling program.
In 2008, the district moved to a more comprehensive program, developing a sustainable purchasing calculator and establishing purchasing and operational baseline data to determine sustainability focus areas. One of the major projects undertaken by the district has been a complete internal inventory of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) such as electricity consumption, purchasing and fuel use. From this analysis, THPRD is developing a Climate Action Plan targeting the areas that can be adjusted the most.Examples include the district’s no-mow program in which unplayable turf grass is no longer mowed and allowed to return to its natural state. In addition, satellite maintenance facilities are being used to reduce the number of eet miles driven per year.THPRD is nearing completion on an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) in which energy savings pay for equipment upgrades to more energy-ef cient models. Old light xtures have been replaced, pool covers added to
reduce the cost and energy of heating the water, hot water systems upgraded at several recreation facilities, and central computer controls installed to better regulate energy use by building HVAC systems.Water conservation has been another area of focus with the installation of central computer controls for park irrigation systems. Pervious pavement and
bioswales at parks and facilities have aided in water quality efforts. The district’s Information Services Department is working to make of ce spaces more sustainable through the removal of certain desktop printers and the use of centralized printers to reduce electronic and paper waste.Other action steps by THPRD include recycling oil and paint, the use of arborist wood chips as mulch, green waste recycling, and even installation of recycled plastic park benches.“Our goal is to integrate sustainability into our whole operation, rather than just a little piece here and a little piece there,” Barbarasch said. “If we can get
our employees thinking about ways to be sustainable, maybe we can serve as an example to the rest of the community and other park districts.”
Al Stetson of THPRD’s Maintenance Department recycles cardboard as part of a districtwide program. The Park District has made a commitment to sustainability since 2005.
