SONG OF PRAISE: Glorify Thy Name

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God and Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, filling and renewing all creation by your eternal Spirit, and manifesting your saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ: in mercy cleanse our hearts and lips that, free from doubt and fear, we may ever worship you, one true immortal God, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, living and reigning, now and forever. Amen. MEDITATION: God our Father—Maker and Preserver of Heaven and Earth

TEXT: Psalm 104:1, 5, 10-14, 19, 24-25, 27-35

Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty.

He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.

He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the air nest by the waters; they sing among the branches.

Page 5: Brian Roloff, Pastor | pastorroloff@AscensionPlymouth · - 1 - INVOCATION P: We gather to worship in the name of the Triune God: the Father who created us, the Son who has redeemed

He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the earth is satisfied by the fruit of his work.

He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate—bringing forth food from the earth.

The moon marks off the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down.

How many are your works, O LORD? In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living

things both large and small.

These all look to you to give them their food at the proper time. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are sat-

isfied with good things. When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they

die and return to the dust. When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works— he who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke.

I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD. But may sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more.

Praise the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD. SONG: A ll Heaven Declares

MEDITATION: God the Son—Our Redeemer

TEXT: Galatians 3:10-14

All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gen-tiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. MEDITATION: God the Holy Spirit—Our Sanctifier

TEXT: 1 Corinthians 12:1-7

Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is giv-en for the common good. SONG: Breath of the Living God (vs. 1)

ATHANASIAN CREED

P: Whoever wishes to be saved must, above all else, hold to the true Christian faith. Whoever does not keep this faith pure in all points will certainly perish forever. Now this is the true Christian faith:

C: We worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, with-out mixing the persons or dividing the divine being.

P: For each person—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—is distinct, but the deity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory and coeternal in majesty.

C: What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit.

P: The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Fa-ther is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; the Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal; yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is eternal, just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three who are infinite, but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infi-nite. In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, and the Holy Spirit is almighty; yet they are not three who are almighty, but there is one who is almighty.

C: So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord.

P: For just as Christian truth compels us to confess each person individually to be God and Lord, so the true Christian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or three Lords.

C: The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeds from the Fa-ther and the Son.

P: So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And within this Trinity none comes before or af-ter; none is greater or inferior, but all three persons are coequal and coeternal, so that in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be worshiped as one God and one God worshiped as three persons.

C: Whoever wishes to be saved must have this conviction of the Trinity.

Page 9: Brian Roloff, Pastor | pastorroloff@AscensionPlymouth · - 1 - INVOCATION P: We gather to worship in the name of the Triune God: the Father who created us, the Son who has redeemed

P: It is furthermore necessary for eternal salvation truly to believe that our Lord Jesus Christ also took on human flesh. Now this is the true Christian faith:

C: We believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is both God and man.

P: He is God, eternally begotten from the nature of the Father, and he is man, born in time from the nature of his mother, fully God, fully man, with rational soul and human flesh, equal to the Father as to his deity, less than the Father as to his humanity; and though he is both God and Man, Christ is not two per-sons but one, one, not by changing the deity into flesh, but by taking the hu-manity into God; one, indeed, not by mixture of the natures, but by unity in one person; for just as the rational soul and flesh are one human being, so God and man are one Christ.

C: He suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty, and from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

P: At his coming all people will rise with their own bodies to answer for their personal deeds. Those who have done good will enter eternal life, but those who have done evil will go into eternal fire.

C: This is the true Christian faith. Whoever does not faithfully and firmly believe this cannot be saved. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—we could not have known you if you had not revealed yourself to us as three persons yet one indivisible God. Remove from us all doubt and unbelief as we ponder this incomprehensible mystery. Give us simple, childlike faith that worships you as Trinity in Unity and Unity in Trinity.

Heavenly Father, the Holy Christian Church acknowledges and glorifies you as the maker and preserver and Lord of all. Especially we remember your great love in sending your own Son and offering him up in our place.

We praise you dear Savior, Jesus Christ, for your love for us, which you so power-fully proved at the cross. In you we have forgiveness, hope, joy, and peace and our eternal redemption.

O Holy Spirit, who goes out from the Father and the Son, we thank you for reveal-ing God’s truth to all humanity. The light of your Word has cast out our spiritual darkness and breathed new life into our hearts by the gospel. Fill us with awe at the breadth and depths and height of the love and wisdom of God.

O eternal and unchangeable God, with angels and archangels we laud and magnify your holy name. Accept our praise this day for creating us, preserving us, redeem-ing us, and delivering to us your forgiveness and salvation. Amen. LORD'S PRAYER (all pray)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

BLESSING

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.

C: Amen. CLOSING HYMN: # 250 From All That Dwell Below the Skies
