Marina Officeand AMENITIESBY COmmODOre KeVIN mILLer

Following completion of the rebuilding of marina One, it has been time to focus on the rest of the 30 year old facilities. In that 30 years, requirements for equal opportunity access have arisen, the marina office needs expanding and could do with reconfiguration and better document storage. Whilst Barbara edwards has agreed to come out of retirement to assist with the collection of 464 extended sub leases, our dredging programme is GPS monitored and requires an office base. Further demand over time has dictated an improved laundry facility and dedicated separate tradesmen’s wash area and toilet.

After several attempts and a need to keep to a budget of $300,000, the attached layout and perspectives illustrate the proposed works to be commenced together with the new kitchen project in march

2014. In line with the current Flag Officer’s approach that if a job is worth doing, then do it properly, several plan amendments have been made and continue to be made until we get it right. A temporary demountable marina office will be put in place although amenities will need to be closed for a period of 3-4 months whilst the building is rebuilt.

The marina Board and General Committee have agreed to split the cost 2/3rd marina Co, from accumulated rentals of owned berths, and one third Squadron funds. These amenities are heavily used by marina occupants and I trust that we can minimize your inconvenience during the construction period, but importantly you will be delighted with the finished product. Our project manager, Jane meaney is currently in the tender negotiation phase.

SHORE POWER IN BERTHS

On several occasions I have been asked about why the main Switch on the power pedestal in on but there is no power onboard my boat. Please follow the simple instruction below to reset the rCD.

1. Check the number of your Outlet eg: 1, 2, 3 or 4

2. run your finger down the side of the pedestal and you will feel a latch

3. Depress the latch and open the side panel. The door is spring loaded to close and seal automatically

4. reset the relevant breaker.

There are many different possible scenarios why the power breaker trips, eg: moisture, overloading, cable kicked, etc. If you have any further issues with the shore power please contact the marina Office direct.

Shore Power and FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT

The rQYS marina has recently added a mobile fast response Fire Cart for use by members in an emergency. The custom built Fire Cart has been designed to provide a fast and effective first response to fighting fires on the marina and boat yard.

easily operated by one person, the Fire Cart utilises the nearest water supply (sea water). Once quickly manoeuvred into position, the Fire Cart delivers a high pressure water jet capable of fighting fires up to 15 metres away. This Fire Cart is capable of producing three times the volume of a standard fire hose reel.

The pump is very simple to use and is labelled with clear starting instructions. Some of the features

include a diesel motor with electric start, easy priming system and dual firefighting capabilities. Compact and sized so it can be easily manoeuvred down the walkways and fingers. It comes complete with securing anchors with stainless steel wire to secure vessels in their berths. The Fire Cart is located outside the marina office and is tested monthly to ensure that it is in current working order.

I encourage you to come and view the Fire Cart and in the near future will organise a demonstration of its capabilities.

Please contact David mcTaggart the marina manager to discuss the demonstration times.

Sail Awayto GREECE BY BrIAN POZZeY

POROS AND NAFPLIO(N)

everyone you talk to has ”done” Greece….The problem is that most of us did it back in the 70’’s and 80’s when mykonos was a thriving party island, Santorini was relatively untouched, Crete was a fascination and Corfu was still somewhat undiscovered by the hordes of tourists and cruise ships that plague those areas today.

POrOS

To me the reAL Greece is the other side, the south west around the Saronic Gulf and the Islands around the Peloponnisos. Setting out from Athens, it’s a short hop to moni and some of the closer islands to the mainland. A couple of hours sail from moni is the Island of Poros, built in the shape of an amphitheatre over two hills, the town of Poros is both picturesque and welcoming.

A large harbour fronts the town with ample mooring available for yachties.

Poros is also famous for its beautiful beaches, stretching uninterrupted along the island’s coastline. Swim

in the crystal clear waters of the long and sandy beach of Askéli; the hotels and bars situated here make it an interesting tourism resort with buzzing nightlife. meyálo Neório is a sandy beach where the pine trees sweep right down to the water’s edge. A must do, is take a walk up a couple of streets to the famous meat Taverna of Dimitris. This fantastic restaurant overlooks the harbour and at night it is a vista of lights. Dimitris is part of a family butcher shop and restaurant where meat dishes are cooked over a coal fire while he sprays a fine mist of water over the flames to moderate the fire and assist in the slow cooking process of his famous food. One cannot go there without ordering the “Pork rib with extension” which is their signature dish and well worth the short trek. These steaks are so big they cannot fit on the plate. enjoy with a group, that’s all you can eat.

NAFPLIO(N)

One of the most beautiful towns in the eastern Peloponnese, as well as one of the most romantic cities all over Greece, Nafplio was the first capital of the newly born Greek state between 1823 and 1834. According to mythology, the town was founded by Náfplios, the son of Poseidon.

The town’s history traces back to the prehistoric era when soldiers from here participated in the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War alike. The town declined during the roman times and flourished again during the Byzantine times. Frankish, Venetian and Turkish conquerors have left their mark in the town and strongly influenced its culture, architecture and traditions during the centuries. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments and statues, Ottoman fountains and Venetian or neoclassical buildings are spectacular.

In the very heart of the town stands the Italianate Syntagma Square where you can while away the time

admiring the beautiful historic buildings and monuments as well as the throng of people drawn to the city centre. Climbing the 999 carved steps up to Palamidi Castle is well worth the trip. From here the view is spectacular and it is easy to see why this was a significant fortress protecting the city from waring ships. The most photographed spot of Náfplio –and its point of reference as well– is Bourtzi, the Venetian small fortress standing on the rocky islet of Agioi Theodoroi. Steeped in history this tiny island fortress is well worth the boat trip from the port. This town has some of the best eating to be found in Greece. A walk through the cobbled back streets brings you to “The Old Tavern”, a restaurant on the street serving the best rabbit Stifado I have ever had. Combine this with the Shoulder of Lamb stuffed with vine leaves and smothered in red Wine Sauce….. This has to be tasted to be believed.

Spencer joined the Squadron in 1946 as a 19 year old Navy Veteran and continued his membership for 67 years until his passing at 86 years on Tuesday 12th November. Whilst not a record, it was certainly testament to his dedication to the Squadron and his love of the sea.

After his education at Ascot State School and Brisbane Boys’ College, Spen joined the royal Australian Navy and served on board the minesweeper Corvette HmAS Lithgow during WW11. He received a number of Campaign medals for his service.

Spen was the proud owner of several wooden racing yachts - his favourites being the 6 square metre yacht Georgina and later the 5.5 square metre yacht Burrabra. He was a keen competitor in Squadron events placing many times in myora, Goodwill and Amity Cups.

He was an avid collector of Naval artefacts and, interspersed with Squadron trophies and plaques, his home has been likened to a mini maritime museum.

He was an accomplished watercolour artist and he also excelled in traditional skills such as ceremonial rope work, leatherwork and calligraphy.

Naval traditions were a feature of Spen’s funeral service held at St Augustine’s Church at Hamilton on 19th November which was attended by many of his Squadron friends. He was remembered as a true gentleman of the sea.

A traditional rum and coke was his favourite tipple and moreton Bay his favourite playground, enjoying

both with his contemporaries of the time including Bill and Doug Perrins, Peter Huybers, mort Hudson, Ian Stubbs and Past Commodores John Hattrick and Greg Cavill.

Spen is survived by his wife Trisha, six children and step-children and seven grandchildren.

He will be dearly missed by all, including his many friends at the royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

Meet the Memberintroducing BRADLEY GINNIVANBY ALICIA SOSZYNSKI - memBerSHIP ADmINISTrATOr

Brad, an avid sailor from the age of 6 and a member for over 16 years, shares some stories about his history and time spent here as a member of the Squadron.

Brad has surely done his fair share of work around the Squadron grounds. The signage he donated around the newly refurbished Boardwalk Café, his work designing the feature art, inspired from the London Olympics, for the newly acquired elliott fleet and the detailing on the new motorline sponsored Pacer sails has undoubtedly made Brad a commendable, dedicated and valuable member.

Aside from all of his work enhancing the Squadron’s exterior, his volunteer and coaching efforts landed him a nomination for Air Vanuatu Club member of the Year in 2005; he has survived prostate cancer, is a father of three children and won an Australian Championship whilst on holidays with Nigel Abbott, a well-known Australian Sailor and Brad’s long-time friend.

His father co-founded the Cairn Curran Yacht Club in central Victoria where Brad learned to sail; he then moved up to Queensland in his early 30’s where his passion became sailing etchells and 40 footers. Brad and his twin brother Craig, now Commodore of the Cairn Curran Sailing Club, both competed in the Whitsunday Sailing Club ‘Airlie Beach race Week’ under the boat name Fifty Shades of 50, specially re-named for the race on their 50th birthday. They came 1st in Division 1.

Although Cairn Curran Sailing Club will always be his first home, he remarked that he has many memories and made life long friendships at the Squadron. ‘The longer I’ve been here, the better it gets,’ he said.

His most memorable moments at the Squadron include winning two heats and finishing 4th overall in the Flying Dutchman Nationals, an event he helped organise. Another memorable moment was obtaining 1st place in the XXXX Gold Cup sailing on Quest with Commodore Kevin miller.

Brad regularly sails etchells with fellow members John Warlow and Shane Dunne. They recently competed in the Southport Yacht Club International etchells Class Australian Championships and came a respectable 12th. Brad also plans on defending the title at the next Couta Boat Nationals with Nigel Abbott. Further ahead, he and John Warlow hope to compete in the etchells Worlds in New York in June 2014.

Brad has been a sign writer for the best part of 25 years, starting his career through various apprenticeships and now owning his own business - moreton Bay Signs.

For more information please see his website:moretonbaysigns.com.au or call Brad on Ph: 0438 139 594

Boat Care BasicsDiesel Fuel FILTERING BY PeTer JeNYNS

Fuel Filters

“Clean fuel, clean fuel, clean fuel” should be the catch cry of every diesel owner. Fuel and its filtration are always at the forefront of any conversation around diesel engine maintenance. According to the diesel mechanics I deal with when servicing customer’s boats, fuel problems – either an inadequate supply of fuel to the engine, or contaminated fuel, account for more engine trouble than any other single source.

This fact was driven home for me recently when I was helping a customer move his boat north. When he first purchased the boat, he had experienced some sludge showing up in the starboard tank fuel filter. However, after a year of bouncing and rolling around moreton Bay, the fuel filters improved to the point where they remained clean, so understandably, he thought the problem was solved. But as is often the case with delivering boats, you don’t always get that perfect weather window and we experienced some fairly lumpy seas up around Double Island Point. Next morning as I did my

usual engine room checks I was concerned to see the starboard tanks primary fuel filter once again full of sludge. (We obviously sloshed the fuel around more than moreton Bay could!) I drained it, replaced the filter and checked the secondary filter which appeared to be clean. However, all of this was too little too late as a few more hours up the track the starboard engine shut down and we limped into Bundaberg.

The average diesel engine’s fuel injection system possesses minute tolerances which can be ground to a halt by the smallest of contaminants in the fuel. As mentioned, that secondary filter looked ok and although concerned, I was pretty confident we had caught it all in the primary filter! Add water to the mix and you have real troubles developing! The good news is, most of these contaminants can be controlled and eliminated with the proper use and maintenance of a good dual filtration system.

All diesel engine boats have at the very least, a basic fuel filtration

system in place. However the key to proper fuel filtration is to have a multistep system. The fuel steps through progressively finer filters rather than passing through the finest filter first. Whilst there are many opinions on which micron rating is best for the primary filter, best practice would be to use two filters of sequentially finer filtration. The first or primary filter should be a 10 micron or 30 micron rating. When it comes to the secondary filter on the engine, you are best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. These engine filters usually carry a rating between 2 and 7 microns. (microns by the way are a millionth of a metre. To put that in perspective, a grain of salt is 100 microns and the average human hair is 70 microns thick.) multistep filtration is most effective because contamination is segregated between course and fine filters. If you just caught all contaminants in the first filter, the second filter ends up doing very little. This will result in effectively halving your filter surface, limiting the ability of your filtration system as a whole to capture and hold contaminants while still allowing good fuel flow to your engine.

Blocking particle contaminants is only half the problem solved. Water in your fuel system is equally as disastrous, and in fact many of the particles already discussed are actually born through water contamination in your tank. As most of us know, water is denser than fuel and therefore sinks to the bottom of your tank. The problem is, it has no means of escape and will act as a nursery for bacteria and corrosion. A fuel tank in a warm engine room provides the perfect environment for bacteria to bloom creating a carpet like layer of biomass across the tanks bottom. The by-product of this is Hydrogen Sulfide, a caustic

Discolouration of the primary fuel filters caused by contaminants

Page 18: Brisbane Polo Clubrqys.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Mainsheet_Summer_2013_p24-52.pdf · NAFPLIO(N) One of the most beautiful towns in the eastern Peloponnese, as well as one of the most

41www.rqys.com.au mainsheet

chemical that corrodes metallic tanks and components. And as I recently experienced, foul weather will stir it all up and emulsify, allowing it to be readily sucked up by the engine. This is where a good water separating filter is a must. They mostly use the low-tech ‘water is heavier than fuel’ approach. This allows gravity to do the separating. Once water is collected in the clear bowl it can be drained off with the built in tap or valve on the bottom of the clear bowl. Whilst this basic system works most of the time, in extremely rough conditions the water and fuel may mix and not separate quickly enough and therefore pass through the primary filter. Filters should always be positioned for easy access and visibility for daily checking. For peace of mind, some filters are compatible with sensor probes to send an alarm to the helm station when water is detected when underway. Without mentioning brand names, there are certain filters that are clearly superior in their design to separate water more efficiently under these conditions. For me, spending the money on the best filtration set ups will only save you in the long run from potential disaster. remember murphy’s Law - no one wants to have an engine fail on the Wide Bay Bar!

Fuel Polishing Systems

Whilst the primary and secondary fuel filter system approach should be mandatory, it can still have its weaknesses. The most obvious being they only work when the engine is running and because the volume of fuel pumped by the engine is comparatively low. Their effectiveness to deal with anything other than mild contamination is limited. In the mid 1990’s the first of the recreational marine fuel polishing systems were coming onto the market. These offered a breakthrough for boaters who wanted the ability to filter or polish their entire fuel tank without running engines and unnecessarily blocking up the primary and secondary filters. While designs vary from manufacturers, the basics of the system are large diameter plumbing to suit large volume pumps. routinely ‘turning over’ the fuel mitigates the agglomeration process and moisture build up which help form contaminates. A retro fitted fuel polishing system isn’t cheap but for larger boats I believe it is money well spent. Particularly if you are cruising and refuelling in marinas where there might be some doubt as to the quality of facilities and fuel.So while many boat owners tend to ignore their fuel filters and rely on their annual service to replace and clean filters, I hope this article will reminded us of the importance of clean fuel management.

Check List

1. make it a habit to always check your fuel filters as part of your engine room checks before starting engines and departing.

2. It’s a good idea to review your fuel filter set up and understand how to change filters should problems arise when away. Always carry spares and a small jerry can of clean fresh diesel and a funnel is helpful to top up bowls when changing filters.

3. Fuel additives are a good idea if you suspect you have contamination issues such as water from condensation etc.

4. If you can gain access with inspection ports, look into your tanks every couple of years or if you suspect a problem due to contaminants showing in filters.

5. There are businesses that can clean out tanks and they generally also provide a fuel polishing service. However, they are only as good as the access port to your tank. If they can’t get right into every corner due to baffles then they will miss areas to clean.

These funds provide the much needed assistance for our young sailors who represent the Squadron all over the world and your support is very much appreciated.

Paul HughesGeneral manager

RQYS BoardChange of MEMBER We are pleased to announce that ms rosemary Collins, who was a member of the rQYS Board and Chairperson of membership Committee, has been elected to the Board of Yachting Australia. The Squadron fully supported rosemary’s nomination and we pass on our congratulations to her in being appointed to this position. However, in taking on this position it was necessary for rosemary to resign her place on the Board of the royal Queensland Yacht Squadron which necessitated the appointment of a new Board member.

Following discussion at the last General Committee meeting it was resolved to invite Life member Dugald Henderson to take rosemary’s place as both the membership Committee Chairman and a Board member of the royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

Dugald has accepted this invitation and we welcome him to the rQYS Board.

Free HOLDING BY COMMODORE KEVIN MILLER

THe PrOCeSS BeHIND Free HOLDING IN 1989-1994 AND ITS reLeVANCe TO TODAY.

An extract and interpretation from the Squadron’s History book ‘up the river and Down the Bay’. (copies available at the Squadron office)

Whilst the manly Harbour was originally developed in the early 1960’s and our original small leased land claim was cemented by the opening of the basic clubhouse in 1964, dredging was limited to areas for marine infrastructure and the balance of the harbour had limited depth. Significantly, the expanded hardstand and grounds we enjoy now came about from dredging spoil for marina one and rows K-P in the mid 1980’s became the foundation of a free holding process that took five years until the Southern access road and street lighting were completed triggering the free holding conditions being achieved in 1994.

“The Government initially refused the Squadron’s request to freehold the property. It was a situation that was not going to be resolved until the 1990s.

“We made inquiries, and found there was a precedent,’ said John Harrison. “So finally they gave ground, quite literally, and offered us the right to eventually freehold everything other than the 30 metres fronting manly Boat Harbour. They established that 30 metres because they suddenly foresaw a flood of applications to freehold all the leases they had around Queensland.”

It was an astute move by the Government. The deepest of any marina lease from the water’s edge in Queensland. That 30 metre strip will always be leasehold, but we can convert the rest to freehold.”

The passing of time, and the exercise of patience, were each in high demand before the harbour could be dredged. But even so it was finally done, and rQ gained permission to build a magnificent floating marina.

The marina continued on through stage two and was pronounced a huge success by all who used it. Past Commodore John Harrison claims that one of the Squadron’s great attributes is that, among its many hundreds of members, one can always find experts in any field of human endeavour who will gladly help with problems. Great strength is derived from the expert advice so readily gleaned from members who are themselves engaged in such fields as law and finance, design and architecture, and civil planning and marine sciences.

The relevance is the inextricable connection between marina development and Squadron advancement. With the existing manly Harbour built in the early 1960’s by a reluctant State Government now fully developed, and with dredging activities about to start, is there a real opportunity to plan for the next half century?

Negotiations with the Department of Transport are continuing to maximize the advantage to the Squadron of dredge spoil through reclamation and with a little luck; a lot of logic and the support of the current State Government, the opportunities may be boundless.

remember our existing 6.5 hectares of land came from the prudent re-use of dredge spoil plus a later compaction and filling process in association with a forward thinking Committee and landlord. All that was at no cost to the Government other than the original harbour. Just how far should we dream. Let’s start with where we need to be in 15-20 years and work back from there......

Book reviewALL THAT I Am

Author: Anna Funderreview: Doris Weekes

THe rAILWAYmAN’S WIFe

Author: Ashley Hayreview: Anne Douglass

After World War One, a politically active young woman from a German Jewish family, Dora Fabian, hoped for a future for her country based on social justice and equality and international co-operation. She gathered around her a group of like minded friends including her cousin ruth and ruth’s husband Hans, to work towards that goal as Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party were rising to power.

Hilter’s fascist henchmen soon set about eliminating any opponents and sympathisers if it was felt they were thought to know too much. Very soon Dora and her friends had to flee Germany for their lives and were granted refugee status in england on condition that they did not engage in political activity in which case they would be sent back to Germany.

In London the group was joined by ernst Toller, a well known left wing German playwright, as they sought to smuggle out of their homeland, and make known to the British and the world, both news and proof of the latest build up of arms and atrocities carried out by the Nazis. even in London the dissidents were not safe as fascist thugs were sent to seek out and attack or abduct anyone opposing Hitler. Sadly, despite all their heroic efforts, their warnings of Hitler’s intensions were not heeded and many of the dissidents paid a very high price for their courage.

There was a wealth of detail in this book requiring close attention, too much for some readers. However although it is a novel all the characters and historical events are well documented and it covers an interesting period of history.

All That I Am was the winner of the 2012 miles Franklin Literary Award.

This is a beautifully written tale about a young woman who loses her husband in a terrible shunting accident. It is a story bound together by trains, a library and poetry. Surprisingly it is not a melancholy story because the main character, Ani, at no time allows herself to become a victim. It takes her a while to come to terms with the shock of her loss, and initially her grief is contained, but as her days become more bearable her grief leaks out slowly and she picks up the pieces and makes a new life for herself and her daughter.

Set in a very picturesque part of southern NSW, Ashley Hay captures the beauty of Thirroul, the quintessential, small Australian beachside town. She evokes the smell of the salt air, the sound of the sea, the majestic escarpments, the heat radiating off the sand and the village atmosphere.

The flashbacks to the happy years she had with mac are done with great tenderness and they become a counter-balance for the sorrow. When she thinks of him, she thinks of him with such love that even when she is in the midst of terrible loss and grief, the memories are both an ache and a comfort to her. But it is Ani’s thought processes that make this such a believable read. Thoughts are things we can’t control. They just pop into our heads unannounced and they do at times surprise us. As Ani finds her way from happy wife and mother to widow and all that entails, we believe her thoughts, and the incongruity of these thoughts.

This book is a snapshot of Australia post-war and about love and loss, but it is also about life and about hope. The majority of our members thought it a good read.

Author: Donna Tarttreview: Nancy macleod

The Secret History is the first novel of mississippi born, Donna Tartt. She wrote it in 1992 aged 28, receiving a $450,000 advance. It had an initial print run of 75,000 as opposed to the usual 10,000 order for a debut novel. The book became an instant best seller and has achieved cult status.

Tartt describes her book not as a Whodunit but Whydunit. It’s a murder mystery where the first chapter reveals who dies (Bunny) and who murdered him (his friends). Set in the rarefied atmosphere of an elite New england College, it is the memoir of richard Papen, one of a small group of bright, eccentric students studying Ancient Greek. under the spell of their charismatic professor, Julian morrow, they are inspired to act beyond the usual collegiate mix of sex, drugs and rock and roll – although plenty of this happens - and enter a world of murdering evil.

Tartt has cleverly used the structure of Greek tragedy to craft a modern day tale. We hear richard’s voice throughout as he describes the turn of events from his first appearance at Hampden College as a poor, scholarship student from Plano, California. He’s obsessed with the Greek students and thrilled when invited into their exclusive enclave. There’s wealthy, scholarly Henry, the beautiful blond twins Charles and Camilla, gay Francis educated at exclusive european schools and doomed Bunny with his religious slurs, temper tantrums and insults. The tension rises as Bunny’s behaviour gets more erratic, threatening to expose the others for a crime they’ve committed. Tartt’s skill is to convince the reader that getting rid of Bunny is for the best. In spite of the students’ remorseless attitude towards their chilling crimes, you don’t want them to be found out and sent to prison. But as time will tell, they never quite get away with murder.

This cast of unlovable characters prompted our ladies to question whether you could still like a book, even if you didn’t like the characters. Let me just say in answer - The Secret History comes with a warning: Proceed With Caution. It provoked strong reactions amongst the group some of whom hated it. On the other hand, there were those who were swept up in this gripping yarn. To be honest, it’s one of my favourite books.
