I would like to thank our clients, subcontractors and consultants for their ongoing support over what has been a very successful 2012. We look to 2013 with confidence with the announcement of some exciting new projects across the Group. Many new opportunities are before us and we look forward to tackling them head on as a team.

Congratulations to the Leighton Broad team on the announcement of the Elizabeth Quay project in Perth’s CBD and Broad’s preferred contractor status for Kings Square 2 and 4, located within the new subdivision that forms part of the State Government’s Perth City Link project. These

projects are a fantastic achievement and one that will certainly leave a lasting legacy on the city of Perth.

Joint Venture, BroadAPM has also been awarded Urbanest, a 24-storey student accommodation building in Melbourne’s CBD. This is the third project awarded to the JV since it was formed in 2009.

I am also pleased to report that a number of key projects have reached Practical Completion across the country including Terminal 2 at Perth Airport, Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick, Gracewood Kellyville Community Living units in New South Wales and Stage two for Woodlinks and Augusta Primary Schools in Queensland.

Not only have these completed projects met the expectations of our clients, they have been exceeded across all areas of the project’s lifecycle. Broad’s pursuit of excellence reflects on our mission to; ‘deliver service excellence to our customers and build on this to ensure future growth’.

With 2013 already well underway, we must ensure that our attention firmly remains on the safety and well-being of all Broad staff, subcontractors, clients and visitors on our sites and offices. Our commitment to safety and well-being has resulted in an excellent safety record, however we must always be diligent and focused to ensure zero harm in the workplace.

The West Australian Leighton and Broad team are preparing to move into their new home this year. Broad is currently building the new premises known as WorkZone and works are progressing well. Working in close proximity with other members of the Leighton Contractors Group will greatly benefit the Broad team, creating better value propositions for our current

and future clients. Information about the impending move will be communicated to our stakeholders in due course.

held an Indigenous Business and Industry

Briefing Forum. Both events outlined project

opportunities, as well as the resources and

strategies available to assist organisations to

secure works on the Elizabeth Quay project.The Indigenous Forum was held on Wednesday, 13 February at the Indigenous Advancement Centre and the Industry Briefing Session was held at the Crown Casino on Wednesday, 20 February. They covered various aspects of the project’s sourcing initiatives and processes, provided an opportunity to meet and network with key stakeholders, and information about other Leighton and Broad wider metropolitan project opportunities.

A first of its kind in Western Australia, the Industry Forums came about through an Integrated Project Team led by the Elizabeth Quay Team, encompassing the Indigenous Strategy and Business Unit, the Community Investment Team, Strategic Procurement and Group Training.

Over 565 major supply chain representatives attended the Industry Briefing Session on 20 February to get a better understanding of the

project and requirements needed to secure opportunities on one of Perth’s biggest construction projects.

The event was very well received from all in attendance. Thank you to May McGuire for delivering a Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country, and to our Community Investment Partners, David Wirrpanda Foundation and Clontarf for their attendance.

Leighton Broad would also like to acknowledge Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) for their contribution and support as well as Adrian Burkenhagen from Rio Tinto, Heath Nelson from Fortescue Metals Group and Matt Prendergast from GatewayWA for their presentations.

It is one of a series of important State Government initiatives to develop Perth as a contemporary, liveable and globally competitive city enhancing its appeal for residents, city workers and visitors alike.

Spanning an area of approximately 10 hectares of prime riverfront land in the heart of the city, the project includes constructing a new inlet with associated roads, parks and promenades.

A workforce of up to 600 workers will be required on the project, which is expected to commence in early 2013 with a scheduled completion date of mid 2015.

1. What is involved in your role as Leighton Broad Project Director for Elizabeth Quay?

My role is to support our hugely experienced team on the journey ahead and ensure we work as one with all

parties of the project. In turn, I am the conduit with the client in ensuring we deliver collectively on any challenges we may face.

2. What works will be undertaken by Leighton Broad on the Elizabeth Quay project?

Elizabeth Quay is such an exciting project in its diversity of the works we carry out, and the opportunities it offers our team throughout the various stages. Works range from dredging and working in the river, to major concrete and civil works, to form a world class urban landscape environment surrounding a central water inlet. It is not very often that such diversity exists on a project and under the watchful

eye of 15,000 people in the surrounding offices and buildings overlooking the site.

3. Elizabeth Quay is a significant project set to transform and revitalise central Perth, what does it mean to you and your team to be working on a project of this calibre?

On a number of occasions I have said to our team, projects of this scale and profile only come around a few times in your career so make the very best of it and enjoy it. We are all excited by it and on a personal level to be part of such a landmark project in a city I now call home, is fantastic.

Kings Square 4 Perth, wa

Broad is pleased to announce that they are the preferred contractor for the construction of two 11 storey

commercial office towers known

as Kings Square 2 (18,500 sqm) and

4 (13,000 sqm). The buildings will be located within a new subdivision created from the old Perth Entertainment Centre site.

The subdivision will form part of the new Perth City Link project, a major urban renewal initiative of the State Government to bridge the existing railway and link the CBD with the cultural and entertainment precincts of Northbridge.

These projects represent the first stage of the planned development of the entire subdivision. Works are expected to commence for Kings Square 2 late April,

followed by Kings Square 4 in July 2013

Works are intended to start on site in early March 2013, for a new substation in Ellerslie (just outside of Mildura on the NSW/VIC border).

Broad will perform all the site setup works, civil works and construct the foundations and slabs ready for Leighton Services. Broad’s portion of the works is intended to run for approximately four months

BroadAPM Joint Venture has been awarded the new 24 storey student accommodation building in La Trobe Street in Melbourne’s CBD.

Works commenced on site in February 2013 and comprises of 379 bedrooms consisting of

single or double studio apartments and cluster apartments, with common living/kitchen areas.

The Level 1 area will be occupied by the adjacent Welsh Church and will be delivered as a shell space only. Ground Floor consists of the entry foyer, office space and meeting rooms, student communal spaces and back of house services areas.

When completed at the end of 2014, Urbanest development will be the tallest student accommodation building in Melbourne. It is only a short distance to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the University of Melbourne.

Environmental initiatives such as solar-heated hot water, recycled water, energy efficient glazing and the use of materials from sustainable sources have been incorporated into the building’s design

Broad is pleased to announce that the civil team have been awarded the Stirling Road Pedestrian Underpass in Claremont, WA.The works will involve the widening of Stirling Road under the existing underpass under the Fremantle rail line. The

widening will see the removal of the current narrow footpath that runs along the western side of the road. In order to provide safe passage for pedestrians under the underpass, a new pedestrian only underpass will be constructed behind the existing western abutment.

Broad Construction Services (WA) has formally reached Practical Completion of the much anticipated $120 million Domestic Terminal - Terminal 2 (T2) at Perth Airport. The new single storey building is the first new terminal to be built at Perth Airport in 26 years and is nearly twice the size of the existing Terminal 3. Taking 500,000 hours to complete, the fast-tracked project opened on time on Saturday, 2 March 2013, less than 18 months after Broad commenced construction in September 2011.

Terminal 2 provides first class facilities and an enhanced customer experience for regional passengers and flights operating within Western Australia.

General Manager – Building WA, Peter Moore said, “Terminal 2 will stand as a landmark achievement for Broad and we are extremely proud to be involved in Perth Airport’s ongoing transformation.”

As part of the $750 million upgrade of facilities at Perth Airport, Broad completed the first phase of works to refurbish the current International Terminal (T1) in October 2011, and is currently completing further works at Terminal 1 with the international arrivals expansion and forecourt roads. These projects highlight Broad’s ability to successfully deliver while adhering to strict security protocols in and around airports.

“Broad’s award of further developments at Perth Airport demonstrates our expertise and understanding of working within live environments, abiding with security measures and handling of sensitive projects,” said Peter Moore.

1,900 tonnes of steel and 8,000 cubic metres of concrete were used to construct the 20,000 sqm Terminal 2 and 10,000 sqm surrounding forecourt and landscaping areas. The new terminal also includes a number of environmental features such as 2,000 cubic metres rainwater harvesting system and re-use, and underground delivery of ventilation to reduce energy costs.

Practical Completion late March 2013.This project is an important addition to both community and state with more than 15,000 children admitted to the hospital each year. Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) will also play an important role in the provision of specialised mental health assessment and treatment for children and young people at risk of significant harm or who have experienced abuse or neglect.

The thoughtful choice of colour scheme, play areas in waiting rooms and bold wall motifs, will all help to support children and adolescents on their road to recovery and better health.

The five storey wing is located next to the existing building and incorporates the new CAMHS building, including an inpatient unit, paediatric rehabilitation facility, short stay peri-operative facility, treatment and consultation areas and a family facility for parents and carers.

The contract was ’Construct Only’ with the exception of the facade, which was designed and constructed by Broad. The external facade design is unique because it has a perceived depth from inside and outside, has no projecting horizontal features that might encourage roosting birds, and is low maintenance by use of pre-finished materials such as vitrapanel.

Broad NSW/VIC reached Practical Completion

of Gracewood Kellyville Community Living

Units project in North Western Sydney,

approximately 35 km from the Sydney CBD

on Tuesday, 12 February 2013.The works involved 73 new one, two and three bedroom community village units in four and five level buildings, with basement car parking, plus a village clubhouse, community services facilities and associated works.

Six women from Milingimbi now have the opportunity for employment after completing a five week cleaning operations course. The course was put together by New Future Alliance (NFA) and National Joblink (NJL) who coordinated and administered the training for what is now known as ‘The Gleam Team’.

The cleaning team are now employed by NFA to do the final cleans on the NPARIH refurbished and new houses before the residents move back in.

The Gleam Team are also providing laundry services at the construction camp. Workers leave their laundry in a bag outside their room and after the pre-start meeting at six o’clock each morning, the ladies collect all the laundry bags and put them in the washing machines before heading off to clean the first house for the day. The washed clothes are put into the dryers and after lunch the clean clothes are folded, put back into the bags, and returned to the worker’s rooms.

14 women and one male completed the course giving them the skills which will help them to find employment with local employers in the community.

NFA Community Engagement Officer, Harry Scott said, “They are very proud of their newly acquired skills, achieved over a five week course mixing theory and practical learning”.

Donna Chamberlin, NJL trainer was terrific, going above her call of duty to ensure that everyone completed the course and assisted with lunches and general mentoring.

“They have completed eleven units in the nationally accredited course and have picked up skills in identifying cleaning products and their applications, how to clean wet areas, kitchens, glass, risks and hazards in the workplace and how to identify, protect and clean fittings and fixtures,” said Donna.

Rachel Downey, NFA’s Site Administrator assisted with lunches making sure that the trainee’s Personal Protective Equipment and other resources were available. Rachel is now the Gleam Team’s supervisor and mentor.

During rest and recuperation breaks when all contractors are off site at Numbulwar, training activities are arranged under the supervision of trainers provided by the Registered Training Organisation.

This enables the trainees to continue working to meet their accredited training commitments.

New Future Alliance (NFA) Project Manager, Clete Ryan; Site Superintendent, Bernie Newman and Site Supervisor, Ian Felsinger looked at projects that trainees could undertake that demonstrate the skills they have acquired whilst working with NFA and are also beneficial to the community.

An opportunity was identified in the School Janitor’s residence which was in a very bad state of repair and

needed refurbishing. The trainees loved the concept, the scope of work was documented by Ian Felsinger and from that point the trainees took ownership of the project and completed it with minimal supervision from the trainers. The Clean Team from Numbulwar did the final clean and tidied up the yard.

The project was completed over seven days in conjunction with off-the-job training components of their traineeship. The fifteen men and six women are extremely proud of their achievement and have resulted in higher levels of self esteem, demonstrated by the confidence and enthusiasm displayed on the job.

The Janitor is currently on Long Service Leave and returning to his new quarters will be a welcomed surprise

Metronode Sod Turning

Young Engineers Site Visit

On Friday, 23 November 2012 the Minister for the Illawarra, Greg Pearce, Metronode General Manager, Malcolm Roe Heathcote MP, Lee Evans and the Mayor of Wollongong, Gordon Bradbery officially turned the first sod to start construction of a $12.5 million data centre at Unanderra.Broad NSW/VIC commenced construction of the Leighton owned data centre at Unanderra in November 2012 and is expected to be complete mid 2013

Broad hosted 26 members of the Young Engineers division of Engineers Australia on 8 November, and a further 24 graduate Engineers from Western Power on the 9 November at the Perth Airport Terminal 2 site.Broad Assistant Project Engineer, Anne Gannon presented to the two groups a project overview and 3D video of the terminal’s construction before leading the visitors on site for a tour.

Queensland Premier visits Palm Island site works

The Premier of Queensland, Campbell Newman MP visited Palm Island to see firsthand the construction works currently being undertaken by Joint Venture, Broad and Ngarda.Broad Project Managers, Michael Howell and Peter Burke accompanied the Premier Campbell Newman, Palm Island Mayor, Cr. Mislam Sam and Mr John Hathaway MP, Member for Townsville on site.

Anne organised the site tours in collaboration with other committee representatives from Young Engineers, Engineers Australia. Places quickly filled within two days of advertising and included student and graduate design engineers from AECOM, Fluor, SKM, Hatch, Curtin, Arup, GHD, Calibre, Halcrow, UWA, and the Student Challenger Institute.

Terminal 2 is the first terminal to be built in Perth for 26 years, and encompassed the construction of a passenger terminal building, airside covered apron walkways, co-generation facility and landscaping features. Terminal 2 has been designed to meet the needs of air services for regional Western Australia, as well as some interstate services. Terminal 2 opened its doors to the public on 2 March 2013

Mates in Construction

On Friday, 15 February the team at Work//Zone in Western Australia received a Certificate of Accreditation for their involvement in the MATES in Construction Program.

The certificate was presented at a special toolbox talk to Broad Project Manager, Pieter Binkhorst in front of 200 plus Broad staff and subcontractors.

MATES in Construction were established following a report by the Australian Institute of Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP) into suicides in the building and construction industry.

MATES in construction is a free national service and it plays a very important role in improving mental health and wellbeing in the building and construction industry.

Works have commenced on the Deakin University site and will comprise of four pavilions with a total of 309 student units on a five hectare site. The project is due for completion November 2013

Upper Lama Lama Earthworks are complete, including all rock drill and blast. Services installation is 70 per cent complete and road works are currently underway.

Outstation Earthworks are 80 per cent complete, all drill and blasting has been completed and services installation is 40 per cent complete

The Corso project was awarded to Broad late November 2012 and Broad quickly engaged the earthworks contractor to commence the basement dig. This resulted in the majority of the basement excavation being completed prior to the Christmas break. The fast progress continued after the break until the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Oswald hit Brisbane

T1 International Arrivals Expansion, WA

Expansion of the International Arrivals Area Terminal 1 (stage two) at Perth Airport is starting to take shape with the first section of the suspended slab now poured. In addition to this the team has commenced the first fix services and block work to the baggage tunnel and have started to erect the structural steel connecting the new structure with the existing building

McArthur River Mine, NT

Earthworks are 100 per cent complete and ahead of programme. The concrete plant is being set-up on site with the cement and premix aggregate trucked in from Katherine. 74 tonnes of reinforcement arrived on a triple road train early February

T1 Forecourt Roads, Stage 1 WA

Works have progressed well with stormwater drainage almost complete and road works well under way. All the conduits in the road have been installed and we are currently in the process of carting in sub base material, mixing and placing and setting up sub contractors for kerbing, sealing and surfacing

Murrumba Downs Secondary School Stage 2, QLD

Murrumba Downs Secondary School was the final school to be completed under stage one of the South East Queensland Public Private Partnership (PPP) with the Queensland Government, known as the Aspire Schools Consortium. Stage two of Murrumba commenced in early January and works are progressing well

Remote Indigenous Housing Program, WA

The RIHP team are moving forward with construction at an impressive pace and have created solid relationships with the community. The team has achieved Practical Completion of four newly constructed homes in the community of Ardyaloon

Riverside Waterbank, WA

Separable Portion 1 - Phase 1a of the surcharge (approximately 33,500 cubic metres of fill placed), has been completed.

Separable Portion 2 – Balance of imported fill is approximately 70 per cent complete, and will be completed early in January to allow the ten

month consolidation process to commence, prior to returning to complete Separable Portion 3 – Surcharge trimming. Stage 3 – Road works are now complete

Work//Zone, WA

The concrete structure of our new head office at Work//Zone is now complete. Both Building A and B have the plant room slabs poured and the main mechanical plant is in place. Services and finishes to the office levels have progressed well with the first of the office space taking shape. This is all being done as an integrated fit out and part of the total project

Metronode Data Centres, NSW

Silverwater Works on site commenced in October and are currently on program and progressing well. The removal of the existing slab has now been completed in the location of the Tech Space, Plant room and Blade Room building footprints, surrounding in ground services, Day Street retaining wall and detention tank.

Unanderra Works commenced in November and the clearing of the site for the installation of fencing and site amenities are now under way. The “for construction” drawings have now been received, allowing Broad to proceed in the letting of subcontracts

Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Project, NT

New Future Alliance was awarded a further $120 million remote area housing works, on top of the existing $300 million of either completed or current works being delivered in the Northern Territory

Central Facilities Building, WA

The Wickham Central facilities team have made high-quality progress to the main structure of the building with the structural steel frame now complete. All substructure services in the building footprint are complete, the main roof sheeting is finished and the team are now completing walkway canopies and fascias. Internal and external wall construction and cladding is now in progress

PTA Railway, WA

Works commenced at Queens Park Station in mid September 2012 and work has commenced

on reconstructing the access ramps at either end of the platform.

Works commenced at Maddington Station in November 2012 and footings for new shelters have been poured

INPEX Building Package 1, NT

The INPEX BLD1 Operations Complex Package is being undertaken under a teaming agreement between Leighton Contractors and Broad. The project is well into concept design stage with design and approvals progressing under a fast track process. The planned commencement on site is July 2013 with a completion scheduled for May 2015

Ormeau State School, Stage 3, QLD

Music building, Performing Arts Centre and the new car park were handed over to the school well in time for the start of the new school year. The new GLA building is now due to reach practical completion ready for the start of Term 2. This was delayed due to bad ground conditions and Broad are targeting earlier hand over so the school can utilise these new classrooms earlier than expected

AP LNG Construction Camps, QLD

The first two stages for Reedy Creek (184 beds) was handed over and occupied with some works still to be completed. The sewer treatment plant is operational and the water treatment plant is due to be installed
