Broad is continuing to grow at a rapid rate across Australia and during this time of steady growth, Broad has conducted a strategic business restructure within the Management Team. These changes to the way we do business are a fantastic start to 2011 as we continue to diversify ourselves nationally and affirm our position as an industry leader.

One of the exciting developments includes Broad Resources, a newly created division of the company. I would like to take this opportunity to personally welcome Ken Hetherington who will fill the role of General Manager, Broad Resources. Ken joins us from Leighton Contractors, Western Region and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience of the resources sector in the North West.

The safety and well-being of all Broad employees, subcontractors, clients and visitors at our sites and offices is paramount in everything that we do. Our commitment to safety and health has resulted in an exceptional safety record for the company nationally, a reputation we are now renowned for.

Following the launch of the Broad Construction Safety Essentials in October last year, Broad has issued the Construction Safety Essentials handbook to all staff and subcontractors. The implementation of these Safety Essentials remains one of our most important tasks across the company and we will persistently continue our commitment to its aims.

A very successful year has just

past with some outstanding award

winning projects and team members

recognised for their hard work and

dedication.

With 2011 already well underway,

I am pleased to report that the

New Year has brought about some

exciting new developments within

the organisation.

Broad will be celebrating a notable milestone

in May 2011, the company will turn 20.

Kari Rummukainen Founder and Managing Director

After the catastrophic effects of the Queensland floods, the state was again hit with another devastating blow of Cyclone Yasi. I wish to express my deepest condolences to all those who have been directly affected and as an offer of support, through generous donations Broad and our staff have donated over $20,000 to the appeal to aid communities in their recovery. I encourage anyone who is in a position to do so to make a donation. Your generosity will go a long way in the states healing process.

On a brighter note, Broad will be celebrating a notable milestone in May 2011, the company will turn 20. This milestone would not have been

possible without the support of so many people and I look forward to

celebrating this significant occasion later on in the year.

There are a lot of new opportunities on the horizon for Broad this year and I look forward to working closely with the Broad Team to deliver some exceptional projects.

The remote Indigenous Housing Program (rIHP)In late 2009 the Western Australian

Government sought contractors to

engage in the National Partnership

Agreement on Remote Indigenous

Housing.

This involved selecting a panel of builders capable of constructing homes for Indigenous Australians in remote communities. The collaboration between three experienced entities was formed and the Mulba Mia Leighton Contractors Broad Joint Venture Team was born.

The Remote Indigenous Housing Program (RIHP) has been made up of four packages to date in the remote Indigenous community of Beagle Bay. Packages one to three have reached final practical completion well in advance of the

estimated completion dates.

The work on the RIHP project ranges from relatively minor refurbishments through to extensive refurbishments and new construction.

Package One – Completed June 2010 In early 2010 the newly formed team was selected as Main Panel Builder for the Dampier Peninsular. A tight schedule of five units was to be completed in 18 weeks, with further works in the pipeline. The team excelled in all areas from engaging Indigenous labour to delivering the first project milestone some three weeks ahead of schedule.

Package Two – Completed September 2010Package two of the RIHP comprised of 11 units and achieved practical completion in September 2010, 13 days ahead of schedule.

Package Three – Completed December 2010Package three commenced in mid September 2010 consisting of 13 refurbishments of varying scope of works including partial demolition, re-roofing, external cladding, internal linings, replacement fixtures and cabinets, painting and flooring. All works progressed ahead of schedule with practical completion in December 2010.

Package Four – Current Early January 2011 has seen the start of 13 units that make up Package four. Work is progressing along steadily with an estimated completion date of April 2011.

Further to this, the Joint Venture has recently commenced a Package in the adjacent outstation of Bobieding consisting of three units, while works in two communities to the north of the Dampier Peninsular are predicted to commence in the coming months.

Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, QLD

New offices for Broad QueenslandBroad Queensland have moved into a brand new building in Fortitude Valley. The big move took place on Monday, 4 October 2010 where they now take up residency on Level 4, HQ South Tower along with staff members from Silverton, in a shared office environment.

Working closely with Ferro Arch Architects, the Broad Queensland team fitted out this new modern office with warm tones of creams, reds and browns. The end result offers staff a friendly and positive place to work.

Features of the office include an impressive reception area to welcome clients and stakeholders and an open, convenient and comfortable staff hub area for lunch and coffee breaks. Individual workstation areas give staff a perfect balance of their own private workspace whist keeping the office an open environment.

Congratulations to the Broad Queensland team for another job well done

The JV teams target is to engage apprentices and/or trainees from the community to ensure the physical buildings are left complete when the project ends, and the community is left with a skill set that can promote self-sufficiency for the future along with significantly improving employment prospects of Indigenous people.

The team have managed to maintain at least 40% Indigenous local employment and the boundaries continue to be pushed.

The team has focussed on establishing a higher volume of work in conjunction with the client’s budget constraints, whilst building on a structured training plan to ensure the Indigenous communities benefit from the program and can self manage any future maintenance issues in their community.

A key aspect to the RIHP’s success has been the combined knowledge, skills and diverse experience of the Mulba Mia Construction, Leighton Contractors and Broad Construction Services. This joint venture is committed to providing a solid platform of financial capability and equitable interests to successfully construct and build the RIHP project. The combination has provided a strong foundation of building and contracting capabilities from the ground up.

All three companies are committed to exceptional client and community stakeholder relationships. Recognising that success depends on a contracting model to build lasting relationships based on a foundation of commitment, trust, confidence, and the right partnership mix. The goal is to exceed expectations for project outcomes, community and cultural relations, safety, employment and training, and the environment.

The Joint Venture is determined to promote sustainable, long term employment and training opportunities through the RIHP work that will underpin real economic outcomes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia

Macarthur Railway upgrade and Interchange projectThe Macarthur Station Upgrade

and Interchange Project was a NSW

Government initiative to improve

capacity and reliability on the

CityRail network.

The Transport Construction Authority (formerly TIDC) and Broad Construction Services (NSW/VIC) Pty Ltd upgraded the existing Macarthur Station to provide:

• New lifts

• A bus/rail interchange adjacent to the station

• A modified pedestrian overpass

• A new commuter car park.

Similar to rail station upgrades previously undertaken by Broad, the project demanded precise planning and coordination to satisfy the limited number of strictly controlled ‘Possession Shut-Down Weekends’ (pictured top right). The project also incorporated a significant portion of major road works, new car parking facilities and the construction of a large bus transport interchanges area, all of which presented their own unique challenges for the team.

Project completion was secured on 24 December 2010 and is now in full operation with improved access, amenities and connectivity between transport modes in and around Macarthur Station, making it a safe and modern facility for its staff and passengers.

An additional testament to the success of the project, Broad was awarded the ‘Occupational Health and Safety Excellence Award’ for projects $5m to $10m on Saturday, 6 November at the 2010 NSW Master Builders Excellence in Construction Awards.

Steve Yammine enthusiastically accepted the award on behalf of the Broad team (pictured far right).

A great result for the Broad NSW team who continuously strive to deliver exceptional results

Broad’s work will provide new facilities for approximately 6000 students, adding in excess of 53,200sqm of educational buildings once completed

The South East Queensland Schools

PPP is a significant milestone

project. Broads involvement in

the ground breaking Private Public

Partnership involves the delivery

of seven schools between 2010 and

2014.

Broad is progressing well with the design and construction of six primary schools and one secondary school as part of the Aspire Schools consortium.

The Broad teams have finished on site at BayView State School, Thornlands and Peregian Springs State School with the first stage of the schools now open. A particularly satisfying achievement was seeing the two schools being awarded with a 4 Star Green Star - Education Design v1 – the first such award to be made nationally under the Green Star Education rating tool.

Stage 1 of Collingwood Park, Bellbird and East Coomera Primary Schools have now all reached practical completion. Bellbird and Collingwood both received a 4 Star Green Star - Education Design v1 rating while East Coomera State School became the first 5 Star Green Star - Education Design v1 certified state school Nationally. A higher achievement than stated in the contractual agreement.

Early 2011, Broad implemented new Construction Safety Essentials - Working Above the Line. The Essentials are designed to provide clear direction for the management of our known critical risks and set the standard for how safety is managed at Broad.

The core objectives are: • To ensure the Safety Essentials are used to

help better identify and mitigate critical risks in every workplace

• For every Broad employee of to be aware of, understand and live by the Safety Essentials

• That no activity under the control of Broad is undertaken without critical risks covered by the Safety Essentials being identified and treated in accordance with the requirements of those Essentials

• To eliminate the potential for fatalities and permanent disabilities.

Broad has a strong safety culture. Our focus is on continuous improvement and we are committed to working with our clients and industry partners to create and sustain an industry where no one is harmed

BroadSafe Day 2010As part of Safe Work Australia Week,

Broad held their annual BroadSafe

Day on Wednesday, 27 October 2010.

BroadSafe Day was held at various national Broad

work sites to provide a clear direction for the

management of critical risks that Broad and

Subcontractor workers are exposed to on a daily

basis. The day was a great success and was well

received by all in attendance.

As the staff and subcontractors munched on

a barbecue breakfast/ lunch, site managers

presented a Toolbox Talk that focussed on

electrical safety and working with live services.

The contribution and responses by the staff and

subcontractors was very insightful and they were

rewarded for their ideas with prizes including

movie tickets, vouchers and safety equipment.

BroadSafe Day also gave subcontractors the

opportunity to have their equipment tested and

tagged by a Broad approved electrical contractor,

including the Perth office that had their

equipment tested and tagged by Test and Go.

Mark Nelson from Test and Go said the day was a

fantastic initiative by Broad.

“I was invited to attend BroadSafe Day to

inspect, test & tag any electrical equipment that may have required that service. As Broad was footing the bill, several sub-contractors took advantage of the offer and got their electrical equipment tagged up-to-date.

The day appeared to be a real success and was well-received by everybody I spoke to. It was a great initiative taken by Broad to provide this information and service for all of their staff and sub-contractors on the sites I visited that day” said Mark.

Thank you to all those that attended and contributed to BroadSafe Day, it is excellent to know that all our sites are very safety conscious

Leighton Contractors Tour de Freedom 1000

The total journey of 5.5 days and 1023 km helped raise much needed funds for Teen Challenge’s drug rehabilitation program, raising in excess of a staggering $195,000.

The Tour Team said the journey was a massive challenge both physically and mentally requiring an enormous amount of fitness and focus.

This amazing test of endurance pushed the riders to their absolute limits, as they were continuously presented with strong cross winds, heavy rain, thunder and lightning and not to mention the long rolling hills.

Tour Team member and Broad Executive General Manager, WA - Construction and Civils, Simon Amos said “At times it was like being on a Spielberg movie set with wind, rain, thunder and lightning.”

After an intense 5.5 days the Tour Team rolled into Parliament House on Sunday, 31 October, where their loved ones eagerly awaited to give

them a big welcome home. It was a sight to behold as they embraced their family and friends with an intense feeling of relief, emotion and excitement, knowing that they had just completed one of the

toughest challenges of their cycling career.

Raf Baugh commenced elite racing

back in 2006 and has already

experienced some exceptional

results on the national and

international duathlon stage.

Raf has gone from strength to strength having progressed from an ITU World Duathlon Ranking of 21st (2006) to 9th (2007) to 5th (2008) to 3rd (2009). In August 2007 a horrific crash at the Powerman Belgium resulted in a broken jaw, radius and ulnar and an extended break from training and work, however that hasn’t deterred him from his vision to be the best.

Raf was a strong team member of the Perth to Esperance Tour de Freedom 1000 and more recently has just taken out the Gatton Grunt Queensland Duathlon Championships and Fun Run.

Broad has been a very proud major sponsor of Raf for the past three years which he proudly

Managing Director, Kari Rummukainen said when he looks back at what he endured, now seems like a distant memory.

“All the hardships we faced are now forgotten and have been replaced with fond memories about the good times, the laughs we shared and the lifelong friendships I made along the way” said Kari.

The Leighton Contractors Tour de Freedom would not have been possible without the support of all the sponsors. Their generosity will go a long way in the community and will help Teen Challenge Grace Academy spread the ‘Stay Free and Say NO! to drugs’ message.

displays on his racing and training jerseys. Broad’s sponsorship helps Raf compete against some of the words toughest competitors who are generously funded by their government.

“I have been extremely lucky to have had the support of Kari Rummukainen and Broad over the past 3 seasons” said Raf.

My chosen sport, Duathlon, is largely based in Europe and therefore the cost of travel to compete on the world stage is significant.”

The assistance provided by Broad has allowed Raf to spend significant periods training and racing overseas, where he has accumulated 23 race victories, 5 World Cup Podium finishes and a peak World Ranking of #3 in 2009.

“This coming season will be my final year of professional competition and I am excited to exit the sport at the peak of my abilities. I am extremely grateful to everyone at Broad, particularly Kari, for the support that has enabled me to pursue my sporting ambitions.”

Raf spends every waking hour training to be the best Duathlete in the world riding 300 to 400 km and running 70 to 80 km a week depending on his work and family commitments.

Raf has set his sights on some big goals in 2011:

• To finish in the top six of the World Duathlon Championships

• To win the Australian Duathlon Championships, Asian Duathlon Championships and the West Australian Cross Country Championships

• Retain his title at the Basque Duathlon Championships and;

• Finish in the top three in the City to Surf with a time under 37mins 30secs.

Broad wishes Raf the very best of luck in 2011 and looks forward to following his successes well into the future. To keep track of Raf’s hectic training and competition regime you can follow him online at www.rafaelbaugh.com

Fast Track Prison AccommodationThe Fast Track Prison Accommodation Project from all reports is moving along at a steady pace to complete the construction of five two-storey accommodation prison blocks in Albany, Casuarina and Hakea.

Hakea and AlbanyConstruction works at Hakea and Albany Prisons are nearing completion with minor works and a final clean currently in progress.

Handover of the buildings at Hakea and Albany will be completed shortly to allow the client to commence the installation of loose furniture and equipment and begin staff training.

CasuarinaThe erection of Casuarina’s precast concrete panels is nearing completion and the construction of the structural steel, sample cell fit-out and services install have all started development.

BERAfter struggling with Queensland’s wet weather, the Building the Education Revolution (BER) project is now well underway. Coopers Plains, Salisbury and Narbethong have been handed over along with Brighton and Bracken Ridge, which are located on the north side of Brisbane. The schools have taken advantage of the new facilities and are now in full operation.

PRojEcTSnAPSHoTSCoopers and SalisburyCoopers and Salisbury both had new halls and resource centres built. The amenities can be used for netball and the likes or as an auditorium for school assemblies and productions. The resource centre is a library filled with computers, interactive whiteboards, overhead projectors and screens and is a learning hub for the schools.

BrightonBrighton has been handed over and the school has occupied the hall. The existing school already had a hall that they use for assemblies and ball games. During the design the Ha2 and the resource buildings were moved closer to each other and this created two buildings with a covered area between them. This also created the need for a boosted hydrant system to be installed for the school as well as some additional landscaping to the number two oval. The resource centre will take the place of their existing library and will include computer desks and a media room. Students will utilise this area when working on their projects.

Bracken Ridge Bracken Ridge project is a little different to the other BER school projects. The work on their resource centre was only an addition to the existing library. This permitted for the construction of a full Ha3 which is a full size auditorium that allows for a full size basketball court as well as netball and volleyball courts. Bracken Ridge was handed over on the 30 November.

Eagle Junction Broad has commenced the bulk of the earthworks and is now awaiting final design signoff from the client before proceeding with the foundation work.

Bethania Bethania Gardens is drawing to a close with handover of the building nearing.

As part of Broad’s strict policy on quality Broad executed the building commissioning and will be carrying out fire tests with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service to get the Certificate of Classification.

St Georges Terrace Streetscape Enhancement

Work on the St George’s Terrace Streetscape Enhancement Project between William Street and Barrack Street commenced on 20 September 2010, and is due for completion in mid 2011.

The works will substantially improve pedestrian access and facilities on the Terrace. The enhancements involve the widening of the pedestrian footpaths on both sides of the road and the widening of the central median strip. Subsequently the number of traffic lanes in each direction will be reduced from three to two, with one of the lanes allocated a dedicated bus lane. In addition to the upgrading of existing crossings at William Street, Sherwood Court, and Barrack Street, an additional pedestrian crossing will be constructed adjacent Howard Street.

Australian granite is used extensively throughout the works in the form of new kerbing and footpath paving. Enhancement features of the project also include new street trees, bus shelters, multifunction light poles and road side furniture.

Reconstruction works of the northern carriageway

are nearing completion with new granite kerbing

and footpath construction progressing well. The

installation of new bus shelters and road side

furniture is on track for completion February

2011, at which time the northern carriageway

will be re-opened to traffic and works will

commence on the southern carriageway.

jD Hardie

The JD Hardie project is tracking well with the

main western extension tilt panels erected. The

roof structure is in place and now awaiting roof

cover. Blockwork retaining walls are nearing

completion to all elevations of the project and

in ground services are complete. The existing

eastern section of the project has now been fully

handed to Broad to enable final demolition to be completed with numerous trades now underway in this area.

BroadAPM – Monash University Monash NRAS involves the design and construction of 600 student apartments in two identical five storey buildings at the Monash Clayton Campus. The project will seek a 5 Star Green Star design and as-built rating under the Multi-Unit assessment tool. Site works for the project commenced in late July and is progressing to schedule.

Building A and B’s in-ground services are now complete. The concrete structure for Building A is 75% complete and Building B is 45% completed.

The structural steel commenced mid February for Building A.

The Green Star requirements have added additional complexity to the design which has been integrated into both consultant documentation and subcontract agreements.

A free standing prototype Single Occupancy Unit remote from the buildings has been constructed in order to confirm the architectural designs and the coordination of services. The prototype also allows for the proving of pre fabricated metal wall studs in relation to installation and construction tolerances.

The project team have now established themselves on site and have developed a great working relationship with the various Monash representatives on campus
