The combination of our extensive machine plant with a team of highly motivated employees builds the solidbasis for our customer oriented and collaborative quotation and order processing.

Every component of the propulsion plant which is produced in our factory(certified DIN EN ISO 9001:2008) will be adapted project specifically,according to your needs. Particular emphasis is being put on high efficiencywith low fuel consumption as well as the minimisation of noise andvibration.

Our services and products are custom built individual units and aredesigned to match the requested classification rules, e.g. ABS, BV, DNV-GL,LRS, RINA etc. and can be delivered with the requested classification ap-proval certificate.

Fixed pitch propellers (FPP) by SCHAFFRAN aresuccessfully operated for many decades on variousship types. As unique as the ships themselves arethe propellers designed for these ships and theirspecifications. They can be designed andmanufactured as open or ducted propellers, as singleor multiple screw arrangement with 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7blades.

Apart from meeting the exact power-rpm-relationrequired, effectiveness (best possible efficiency withminimal fuel use) and low noise (minimisation ofvibrations) of the drive as well as harmful cavitation prevention are a priority for us. SCHAFFRAN is ofteninvolved in the early design stage of a project and can thereby support the customers in their selection of theright propulsion concept, as well as the determination of important parameters such as the engine perfor-mance and gear box reduction ratio.

Especially the planning, monitoring, and analysis of scale model tests and sea trials together with the evaluation and optimisation of the drive line is madeuse of by many customers. During the propeller design all parameters of the ship and the drive lineare taken into account in order to have the optimalcombination of propeller diameter, number of blades,blade area, section profile, and blade contour byadapting it to the wake field. We rely on decades ofexperience and latest FEA and CFD methods. Due toour stringent quality assurance, a measurementsystem, especially designed by SCHAFFRAN andspecialist personnel, we are capable ofmanufacturing propellers according to customerspecification in the required tolerance classISO 484-1981 class “S”, class “I”, or class “II”.

For many decades design and production of shipshaft installations are belonging to our scope of supply. Together with our fixed and controllable pitchpropellers they are operated successfully all over theworld on many motor and sailing yachts, on marineand governmental vessels, on patrol boats as well asvarious special service crafts in offshoreor research operation. Many merchant vessels andfast ferries are equipped with SCHAFFRAN propellershaft installations and are reliably on duty. Over thedecades we have increased our scope of servicesaccordingly. Also SCHAFFRAN’s hydraulicallyoperated controllable pitch propel-lers (CPP) have been delivered andoperated successfully for overthree decades on various shiptypes.Through distinct designvariations we are able to offer ouroptimised CPP installations fornearly every ship application.

Our hydraulically operated CPPsare available in different sizes andshapes with and without featheringposition, with 3, 4, or 5 blades. It isunderstood that the blade shape isindividually adjusted for the best

hydrodynamic fit to achieve a minimum in noise and vibrations as well as a maximum in efficiency. With ourproven CPP hub designs, the blade pitch angle can be actuated over a range of 45° with the standard com-pact VK series. This actuation range is extended up to 120° with the VL-S series, thus allowing a featheringposition with minimum hydrodynamic drag for a non-driven propeller.

The hydraulic pressure needed to adjust the propeller blades is very low at approx 25 - 30 bar. This has a verypositive influence on the durability of all seals. The robust single-piece hub design allows an effortlessassembly and dismantling of the propeller blades.

In addition to the design /manufacture / supply of new fixed and controllable pitch propellers and shaftinstallations, SCHAFFRAN PROPELLER + SERVICE GmbH also offers you acomprehensive world wideservice for spare parts andassembly.

We carry out maintenance and repair for fixed and controllable pitch propellers of any kind and size. Amongst others we can conduct the following repair and service tasks for you:

• Straightening of propellers and controllable pitchpropeller blades

• Welding of blade segments

• Pitch modifications / efficiency adaptations

• Polishing of large propellers

• Statical balancing

• comprehensive world wide service for spareparts and assembly

• Seat grinding of propellers and shafts for an improved contact patern

Depending on the extent of the damage, the repairs can be carried out either in one of our workshops ordirectly as mounted on the ship.

In our head quarter in Lübeck we also have the possibility to straighten shafts. Depending on the degree of the damage or wear we can reproduce or reworkbearings, bushings or shaft liners as well.

Our repair services meet the classification requirements, e.g. ABS, BV, DNV-GL, LRS, RINA. Classification surveys can be conducted on demand and the matching classification approval certificate can be delivered.

Depending on customer requirements, we are able to produce sterntubes exactly to customer drawings or toalso include the component design in our scope of work. For this purpose, we turn our attention to the integration of supply lines (for oil, water and air) needed for the different types of sterntube seals and for thetemperature sensor supply of the shaft bushes. Regardless of material (steel, stainless steel, aluminium, synthetics) and type of lubrication (oil, bio-degradable oil, water or grease), we have the right solution for yourrequirements.

Based on our long years of experience inLübeck and Hamburg with regards to designand execution of the tasks, we repair andmodify propellers of any size in the center ofthe free trade zone in the port of Hamburg.This well-known workshop emerged from thetraditional mechanical engineering companyHabermann. It then became Ostermann andthereafter DMR propeller workshop. 1st May2000 SCHAFFRAN PROPELLER + SERVICEGMBH took over this workshop with all itsemployees, keeping this established propellerrepair workshop in Hamburg.Our world wide service offerings include therepair and straightening of propellers, thepitch modification, efficiency adjustments, aswell as emergency repairs or the grinding /polishing of propellers in dry docks or from a pontoon directly at the ship.

To minimize drag and thereby reduce fuel consumption, we can treat surfaces through fine-polishing with aroughness of max. 3 µm according to class S (ISO 484/ 1or 2 - 1981 or Rupert “A”) upon request.
