In 1891 The Sisters of St. Francis of

Philadelphia moved to Tacoma Washington to open a new hospital. The new hospital was designed to fulfill the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of the city of Tacoma and all who came to their doors. St. Joseph Hospital was born.

1900 St. Joseph became a nursing school

that had a tough curriculum that lasted two and half years. The school was run by Sisters M. Zacharia and M. Crucifixa. The two Sisters were founders of St. Joseph Hospital in 1891.

1906 St. Joseph was known as the

hospital of choice by expecting mothers.

1915 St. Joseph moved to a modern

building. The new hospital took up the block of South 18th Street and South 19th

Street. It had 300 private and semi-private rooms.

1974 St. Joseph Medical Center opened to

the public. After 36 years, the hospital is a land mark in the Tacoma skyline.
