Agile working & Sustainability
Business drivers for flexible & mobile working
• Increasing need to be productive regardless of location
• Limited remote access to corporate
systems impedes productivity
• Delayed response times, potentially leading
to lost customers and revenue
• Time is wasted accessing data and
gathering input for critical decisions
• Inefficient communications impacts customer relationships
• Employees ability to communicate
varies with their location
• Inconsistent customer service
• Customer relationships slip when employees travel or are unable to respond
• Increasing property, HR, communications, IT and travel costs
• Inefficient business processes
• Expansion and growth is hindered
• High spend, unable to save without
affecting customer service
• Business continuity threatened by unforeseen events
• Increasing risk of data leakage
• Disruptions result in lost time and
productivity
• Blurred network and device boundaries
increase security risks
• Drive to decrease carbon footprint
• Helping employees improvework-life balance
• Sentiment towards organisations is affected
by green initiatives
• Government legislation to encourage
flexible working
Challenge Issue Impact
• Search and selection costs
• Flexibility is highly valued by employees

The BT Agile Working Journey
Flexible working provides . . .
In 2008, teleconferencing eliminated 717,000 face-to-face BT meetings,
saving some 1.4 million return journeys and a net 53,000 tonnes of CO2
Increase flexibility has been a key factor in reducing absenteeism by a
third in 6 years
We save £550 million a year through reductions in our office estate, with
disposals yielding capital receipts of £500 million.
96% of our new mothers return to work, twice the UK national average, saving
us an estimated £5m a year in recruitment and induction costs
Home workers take 63% less sick leave and are 20% more productive than
their office-based colleagues, so customer issues are handled sooner
Flexible working allows BT people to be more project-based: teams across
many disciplines can be pulled together quickly to solve a problem.
