– Locate the Help Guides for teachers on Moodle;

– Use a Moodle course room to communicate with students registered in it;

– Start a discussion forum within a Moodle course room.

BU eLearning 1.0

• From the academic year of 2010/11 the eLearning platform at HKBU has introduced a few new features:– Early release of course room for each teaching semester;

– New User Interface – simplified with the feedbacks from teachers and students users;

– New users oriented quick help;– New HKBU Library toolkit.

Early release of course room

• From the academic year of 2010/11, with the assistance from the Academic Registrar the eLearning platform at HKBU will:– Create the course rooms for all the courses 

relevant to a given teaching semester, at least 1 month before the start of semester;

– Teachers assigned to these courses will be able to access to their assigned BU eLearning course rooms to begin their preparation for the new teaching semester;

– Students only have access by first day of the teaching semester;

– Courses from previous two semesters will be kept available on the system for ease of reference and retrieval.

New User Interface

• User Interface (UI) for BU eLearning 1.0 is simplified to removeclutter and allow for ease of navigation by teachers and students.

• The new UI is a design informed by users.

New User Help Guide

• New Help Guide for teachers have been designed as single page, easy to use, tasks oriented help files.

New Library Toolkit

• A New Library Toolkit has been incorporated into each of the new course room allowing direct access to Quick Online Referencing of Library Subscribed References, Popular Search Tool of Library’s Databases and Catalogues, and Citation Guides. 

• Users can also directly access Library Support via “Ask a Librarian!” online service.

New Wine in New Wineskin

• With these new features and more to improvements to come, we have re‐launched our eLearning platform as BU eLearning 1.0!

Activities: 1. Log on to your BU eLearning 1.0 and use the Library toolkit under the CHTL1003 course room to perform the following tasks:• Find out some scientific information 

about “Komodo Dragon”.• Find the latest two workshops on 

OBTL from CHTL, HKBU. 

2. Using the single page Help Guide, perform an operation on BU eLearning 1.0 that you did not know how to do before and share with your neighbor of your achievement.

What is Messaging?

• Private asynchronous communications with students.

• An alternative to email wherein all your BU eLearning communications can be tracked in one place.

Engaging Messaging Practices

• Tutorial support:– Students frequently 

find the messaging system a useful way of sending private questions to their tutors. 

• Encouraging course participation:– The message system, 

combined with the participants list, is a great tool for encouraging students to stay engaged with your course.

Activity: Create a Chat session in your assigned space within CHTL1003 and invite a peer to join your Chat session.

What is Chatting?

• Open synchronous communications with students.

Creative Chatting Practices

• Online office hours– The chat room is an easy way to allow 

your students to contact you during a scheduled time to ask a quick question about an assignment or a lecture.

• Group chats– If you’ve set up student groups, each 

group can have its own chat.

• Last‐minute exam preparation– You could set up a chat room a week or 

even a night before an examination for students to discuss any study questions.

• How about creating a discussion forum?

Activity: Create a Forum session in your assigned space within CHTL1003 and invite a peer to join your Chat session. Also contribute to one of your peer’s discussion forum.

Effective Forum Practices

• “Good moderation and intelligent deployment of discussion opportunities are more important to the success of a course than the static content.” – Jason Cole, Product Development Manager, Open University, UK.

Engaging Forum Practices

• Peer assessment– Forums are an often‐overlooked tool for peer assessment.

• Q & A forums for problem solving– John Rodgers, from Ontario, Canada, uses the Q & A forum type to good effect in teaching 

mathematics. The Q & A forum allows a single question post that the students must answer before they can see other responses.

• Interviews• Debates• Role‐playing and storytelling• Frequently asked questions• Reading study groups• Social forum• Etc.

Tracing & tracking students works via BU eLearning 1.0

• Did you notice how you can trace and track students’ responses and progress via BU eLearning 1.0?

Activity: Go back to your previous activities and discover how you can trace and track students activities and responses.
