Old Town Chapter - # 8194
Harley Owners Group
Brandon, FL
www.oldtownhog.com
Hello Old Town Chapter Members, It seems like the last month has gone by fast while we have been working slowly to get back to some type of nor-malcy. While many restrictions have been reduced, we are not out of the woods yet. Recent news states that the number of positive cases have spiked. The speculation is that more tests are being conducted thus the increased positive numbers but who really knows, right? In June we started recording the miles and event points for rides which will be used to determine the Rider and Member of the month. Those winners will be announced at the July Chapter Meeting. We even had the first over-night ride of the year which was Helen Georgia. The weather was better than forecasted with a little rain on several days but mostly dry. Can’t say the same for the riders on the way home on Sunday. They ran into severe weather but all made it home safe. While other overnight rides were planned earlier in the year they had to be canceled due to Covid. Stay tuned for additional overnight rides information. Speaking of Chapter meetings, we held the June Chapter meeting (for the first time ever) near the restaurant area of Brandon Harley Davidson. We had 55 members attend. There were some storms to the east but they were moving away and didn’t affect us at all. There was also a nice breeze blowing so this made it comfortable and kept the bugs down except the hornet that flew at me while I was up front. We are planning on resuming several meetings in the training room of Old Town Brandon HD. The June Road Captain meeting and the July Welcome Wagon Classroom are currently planned for the room. If anything changes we will let everyone know. We are also planning on returning to the Hilton Garden Inn for the July Chapter meeting. The hotel had stated that state they have the space (per guidelines) to accommodate our normal size group. We hope to have merchandise and Debbie sewing patches for us at that time as well. As a reminder the July Chapter meeting is on “Sunday” July 12th. This is due to HGI double booking the room inadvertently. A large family reunion is using the room both on Friday & Saturday that weekend. In the meantime Debbie will sew your patches on your vest at her house by appointment only. The best way to get ahold of her is to “text” her at 813-384-0207. It has been really nice to see more people from the Chapter as we go along. This has been and still continues to be a confusing time with many suggestions, recommendations and mandates for helping to stop the spread of Covid. What is the right thing to do, what should you wear as far as face coverings, should you shake people’s hand or hug people? Do you have an underlining medical condition, which makes you more susceptible to contacting the dis-ease? All good questions that we have been asking ourselves. The guidance from the CDC has changed numerous times and is likely to change again. The best answer I can come up with is do what you think is right for you and your family. If you are not ready to be with our OTC family yet, we do miss you but understand your decision. When you do come back if you are not ready to shake hands or give hugs, let us know. We will understand and respect your decision. Stay well and see you when we see you. OTC Director Rick Vincent

Welcome July! Let’s Talk Some Paws! Old Town Chapter Harley Owners Group has been involved with the “Paws for Patriots” for the past Fifteen years. This year, we will be hosting our 1st annual
Paws for Patriots Sporting Clays Tournament to support veterans that have been blinded, have lost limbs and/or suffer from PTSD. Together we can enable these wounded veterans to once again enjoy mobility, independence, and most importantly, allow him or her to do so with dignity. Let’s show them that their sacrifices matter to us. Let’s help to give them back their freedom. Thank you for your time and consideration all these years. I hope you will consider being a champion for this amazing cause again. Be sure to visit “Liberty”, the puppy bank, at the dealership, and see me, call me, or write me, for any and all flyers and sheets you may need. Also, you can see and download these from Oldtown-hog.com, and our Facebook page. Be sure and tell your friends and employers, we would love to accept any help they can provide. Welcome to the Road Captain family Bob Backus and David Constant! And welcome to our new members! Thanks to each one of you for your patience and for staying positive and safe last month and being the most AWESOME H.O.G. chapter in the USA!

Don’t Get In A Jam…Bee Safe July 2020
Welcome to the surface of the sun…
Summer riding in Florida feels a lot like the surface of the sun at times (that is, when its not like riding through Niagra Falls). All that heat needs you to prepare to keep yourself safe, and hydration is the biggest item to care for. Good hydration for any outdoor activity begins the day before. Make sure you are always drinking plenty of water, not just the morning of the ride / activity, put start the day before. There used to be a common school of thought that Coffee was bad for this because the caffeine would lead to dehydra-tion, but further studies have shown that coffee has more than enough water to counter those effects and help with hydrations, so if that’s your drink of choice, carry on (just go easy on the sugar). A lot of people think sports drinks such as Gatoraide or Vitamin waters are good for hydration, but they are just PART of the equation and shouldn’t be your sole source. In fact, too much of these can cause other issues and make you sick. A good ration to follow is 3 bottles of water for every 1 bottle of sports drink. An important DON’T when it comes to hydration is alcohol (sorry to be the bearer of bad news)…alcohol actually dehydrates you (that hangover you get after drinking too much is actually dehydration sickness). So go light on the adult beverages the night before any planned outdoor activities and make sure you end the night with a large glass of water to start the rehydration process. Another thing to consider…we know proper care helps prevent our bikes from breaking down, but it can still happen, and it seems they always know when you are the furthest from help to do the break-ing down. Make sure you keep a few bottles of water in your tour pack / saddle bags at all times. Should something happen, you can at least keep hydrated while waiting on help. Another good idea is to keep a small umbrella with you so you can shade yourself should you end up on the side of a not-so-shady road. There are many examples: Remember the one where the rider has dollar bills falling off of
him as he rides down the road. Another with a rider dressed in white clothes – pretending to be a biker, adding they are America’s #1 motorcycle insurer. A third example –people at the office near their work stations holding a note of their co-worker noting he saved so much
money on his insurance, he decided to take time off for an adventure on the open road!
Buyer Beware: There are insurance companies who want to sell you insurance; and, they brag about how much money you save by doing business with them. However, the problem is later down the road – after a motorcycle accident – you find out the at-fault driver had
little or no insurance coverage; and to add insult to injury, we find many motorcycle insurance agreements themselves to be “empty products” to the biker, not providing adequate coverage!
Accidents Happen: A local biker was travelling on U.S. 41, in Gibsonton on his way to
Tampa when a Volkswagon Jetta made a left turn in front of him, violating his right of way, causing a serious motorcycle crash, with serious injuries, requiring admission in the hospital, surgeries and he is out of work for the next six months. Investigation revealed the
at-fault driver had no insurance; and, the biker who thought he had full coverage learns he has no medical payments coverage, nor any uninsured motorist coverage. After such medical bills and lost wages, this biker is likely to file for bankruptcy!
Protect Yourself: Make sure your motorcycle insurance has uninsured motorist coverage,
the highest limits you can afford. For additional protection, revisit your automobile insurance coverage, making sure you have uninsured motorist coverage in the insurance agreement and making sure you have “stacked” coverage; as, the same may follow you if
involved in a motorcycle crash. For additional information, visit HOG-LAW.com, click on the tab for “Helpful Information” and see our “Insurance” page – highlighting the “Five Facts
Every Rider Should Know About Insurance Companies.” Call Brad: If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident, feel free to call me
directly on my cell: (813) 220-7767 anytime 24/7 for a free and immediate consultation. There are no fees or costs unless we obtain a recovery; and remember, you shouldn’t pay the
