    Safe Places Sharing !ents

    Safe Places is a scheme to provide safe places in the

    community where people with learning disabilities can goif they get into trouble or feel unsafe, frightened or bullied.

    e know that there is a lot of good work going on in theNorth !ast and "orkshire and #umber and we will behaving two events where people can share what ishappening in their area.

    e have asked some people to tell us about their Safe

    Places schemes and what has made it a success.

    Self )d!ocacy Supporters Network

    Inclusion North continues to run a network aimed atpeople who have a paid or volunteer role insupporting a self4advocacy group.

    $his network is for people working or volunteering inInclusion North member areas only.

    $his year we will be holding separate meetings for groups in "orkshire 5 #umber and the North !ast soyou can go to the one closest to you.

    $he aims of the network are6

    • $o share e7amples of good practice and learning

    • $o work together to find solutions to challenges

    • $o e7plore any things we might work on together

    e will be focusing on issues to do with funding, howto use graphic facilitation and following up on the

    development of the ‘How to Inuence’ booklet.

    *amily carers play a key role in supporting their son,

    daughter, brother, sister, husband, wife, cousin, niece,

    nephew, other relative or friend with a learning disability.

    $his free workshop will give you an understanding of how

    to advocate and negotiate with and for your relative or

    friend.

    People with learning disabilities to design

    /uality checks for N0S ser!ices

    People with a learning disability are being asked to helpwith new tests to improve N#S Services by the N#S%uality checkers programme.

    People with a learning disability will be employed toinspect local N#S Services.

    $hese people will advise on how peopleEs needs can bemade better by using their own e7perience of care andsupport.

    N#S !ngland are looking to help groups set up to offerFuality ;hecks and improve consistency across thecountry.

    $hey will do this by establishing a national programme to

    support local %uality checks.N#S !ngland with the ;entre of )isability Studies at $heniversity of eeds and ;#?NG! will be asking

    • People with a learning disability

    • *amilies and ;arers

    • ocal and National Groups

    $o develop new resources.

    1earning 2isability ngland *onsultation

    People *irst !ngland and the #ousing and Support ?lliance carried out the earning )isability !nglandconsultation and received over 3 replies.

    $he key things that they found were

    • 'K of people think earning )isability !ngland is agood idea and want to be involved

    • +'K of people did not know if it was a good idea

    • $he biggest challenges people with learning

    disabilities have are attitudes, lack of opportunitiesand choices

    • $he biggest challenges facing families are finding

    good support and services

    • $he biggest challenges for organisations are money

    and funding

    • It is very important to people, families and

    organisations that earning )isability !ngland

    includes people with comple7 needs

    $he peopleEs parliament is a group of people with learningdisabilities, they tell people and organisations what theyreally think and feel about local and national issues.

    $hey met with N#S !ngland and the ;ommissioner forSocial Services in )arlington.

    Speak up Sutton a self advocacy group in South est

    ondon have been doing some work to develop the work

    of the Stay p ate campaign.

    $he Stay p ate campaign is about people having

    choices about going out in the evenings or staying out

    late.

    People with learning disabilities often need support to be

    able to go out in the evening.

    ots of people have support workers that finish work at

    +pm. $his means lots of people with learning disabilities

    go home early.
