Count
Your Blessings Every day, after both of our children
are asleep, we breathe and take a
moment to count the omer. This Torah-
based spiritual practice tracks the 49-day
journey from Pesach to Shavuot.
This journey can resonate with a person on several levels: It charts the
beginning to the end of the spring harvest -- a time of reflecting on the
past year and offering gratitude to God for what our work has yielded.
It is the journey from freedom at Passover to commitment on Shavuot.
And it is a journey from brokenness to wholeness (seven is the Jewish
number of wholeness – seven times seven even more so!).
The Jewish kabbalists saw this period as a time of purifying the
self, focusing on God’s attributes and how we can connect with aspects
of His perfection. By the time you are reading this article, we will be
counting the final week of the omer – connected to God’s aspect of
malchut, or sovereignty (some would say leadership). The way that
God (and that we) are leaders connects to how we have already
cultivated qualities of love, discipline, compassion, endurance and
humility, which are among the other aspects we seek to deepen into
during the omer.
This year we are looking forward to a wonderful Shavuot at
Beth El, with many ways in which we will beautifully witness the cultivation of joyful Jewish leadership and

knowledge in our community. On June 8th, we will gather at
B’nai Jeshurun in Pepper Pike for their community-wide
Tikkun Leil Shavuot - a traditional Jewish practice of all-
night study and spiritual growth with dozens of area scholars
and Torah teachers. Our emeritus Rabbi Stephen Grundfast
will teach “Reading Between the Lines: the Wacky World of
Midrash,” and Hazzan Matt will teach an early session
entitled “The Secular Sulzer: Rediscovering the First
Modern Cantor” based on his new research in Jewish
musicology.
On Sunday June 9th, we will gather for our first day
Shavuot service with many pilgrims present – our religious
school students will anchor the leadership of the shacharit
service and some will be Consecrated, and then our many
“Spring into Torah” students (including our Shaliach, Mor
Roffe) will do the Shavuot Torah reading. Having so many
new leaders among us truly will move us closer to that aspect
of malchut, and to the Shavuot-worthy goal of bringing
Torah into more lives. We will conclude, as last year, with
dairy dessert treats from the East Coast Custard truck to
sweeten our holiday!
We encourage you all to join us over the two days of
Shavuot and use this time to join the Jewish people in
refining our character and opening our hearts. Wishing you
new revelations and a sweet month!

Shabbat Shalom Bereavement
Group
This is a monthly grief support group for adults who have experienced the death of a loved one. Facilitated by Margaret Bossaller, MSW, LSW, Bereave-ment Coordinator, with Western Reserve Grief Services.
Please join us for discussion, support and comfort the fourth Saturday of most months at 12:15 PM, following an extended Kiddush lunch.
The next group meeting will be Saturday, June 22.
Funded through a grant from the Edward I. Abramson
JCBA Programing Fund.
There’s a Catch-22 in grief
support: because we don’t talk
about the realities of grief in our
culture, no one really knows
how to help. This is true for
friends and family members and
for the pros. The people who
can best tell us how to help—
grieving people themselves—
don’t have the energy, interest,
or capacity to teach anyone how
to be supportive. So, we’re
stuck. Friends and family want
to help, grieving people want to
feel supported, but no one gets
what they want. If we’re going
to get better at supporting each
other, if we’re going to get what
we all want—to love and be
loved—we need to talk about
what isn’t working, and we
need to talk about what really
helps.

Our magnificent Tree of Life was created to record the happy events in the lives of Beth El members and their families.
A birth, a wedding, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, a confirmation, an anniversary – all are among the milestones that can be remembered on the leaves of the Tree of Life.
The cost of a leaf is $125. You may use 3 or 4 lines with up to 23 letters in each line. To order, call Sherri Leubitz, 330-867-0364.
