If you own a Bulldog one thing I am sure you will be dealing with as an owner is skin allergies. This is a common problem in all Bulldog breeds.

Here are the ten things to keep an eye out for, that indicate your Bull-dog might have an allergy:1. Constant paw chewing.2. Recurrent ear infections.3. Hotspots on the skin.4. Constant scratching and licking.5. Red or pink looking skin6. Rubbing their tummy on the ground.7. Pimple type lesions.8. Crusty scaly spots on the skin.9. Hair Loss10. Hives or Facial SwellingAny of these sound familiar? I thought so… Now lets see what type of allergy your Frenchie could be having.

Allergies are broken into 4 main types – each type might show differ-ent symptoms but more often than not, they show the same symp-toms which can make it impossible to easily determine the culprit(s).

The First type is the standard flea allergy – self explanatory – your dog may have fleas and has an allergic reaction to the bites, a bit like humans with mosquito allergies. Some might get redness, itchiness around the tail (always trying to scratch their lower back on things) some may chew at their skin around their tail and you can tell they are just uncomfortable. Fleas will only cause itchiness if dogs are allergic to them.


Second type is a food allergy – an allergy to ingredients in their food. Dogs can be allergic to anything in food – it could be the protein source, rice, grains (and all the additives in commercially made foods), or a combination of these, that frenchies can be allergic to.

Third type is of allergy is airborne – this is generally allergens such as pollens that are inhaled.

The Fourth type of allergy is contact allergy – this is again anything the dog physically touches – this could be grass, weeds, plants, trees, house dust mites, normal environmental moulds…the list goes on.

How do you know if your Bulldog has an allergy?

Maybe with the exception of flea allergy, in general it is impossible to determine what a dog is allergic to just by doing a checkup. This is because the different types of allergies may show similar symptoms. Also one thing I am commonly observing – bulldogs that suffer allergies more commonly than not have multiple allergies rather than 1 single allergy. I have tested over 20 Frenchies to have more than 20 allergies, to the 90 allergens that are tested!

As a general rule, if your Bulldog is itchy (and shows any of the things in the list of 10 allergy symptoms) and seemingly no matter what your vet and you do to treat it (and other causes of skin problems have been ruled out), it just keeps coming back, and coming back, and coming back…then most likely there is an allergy underlying it.

Wry jaw. Big fault or not?

These are individual opinions posted by some of the world’s top breeders. How big is the problem in our breed?

A wry jaw is just a fault like any other fault also there are degrees of a wry jaw , it can be slight or very bad but for me if you have to search for a fault then surely it’s not as bad as a glaring fault what all the ring side can see, I would put up a dog with a wry jaw if everything else was good.

Wry jaw means it wouldn’t be fit for function i.e hold on to a bull?! and people still say we are a ‘head breed’. But I actually think other breeds are much more strict on jaws then Bulldogs! I had a bitches jaw go off after winning a CC so it’s not just to do with growth! Many say the wider the jaw the more likely to go off! Is a wider off jaw better then a narrow/bowed true one?

A wry jaw is not a disqualification in the UK.

Wry jaw is a big fault as standard not only say under jaw directly under upper jaw , it also say parallel . It 2 times the same ... So it show us how much its impotent . And yes it is much bigger mistake that a bit long in loin dog , or not the best Topline . Its a breed head , and the wide and parallel jaws are a part of dog expression . All expression would have changed . And wry jaws are going worst with age and it makes the dog difficult to eat . For me is a big fault .


I totally agree a wry jaw is serious, so is lack of breed type, lack top skull, lack of fore-face, lack of cushion or proper width of muzzle, lack of depth of head horizontal (eye to ear)and vertical (top skull to apex of turn of jaw or “pancake head”) down faced dogs (nose 1.5 inches or more below eye line, dish faced, eyes far apart on the head, high set or heavy ears... They all are serious faults when any combination of 3 or 4 or coupled together on one single dog... Judge the whole dog... Just sayin...

I have a hard time awarding a dog with the nose too far down on the face but it’s a fault, not a DQ. The same with any fault. I’m not a fault judge...look at the whole dog.

Would I breed to one? No. Neither would I breed to a blue eye.

I view wry jaw in a puppy as much more of an issue than I do a veter-an, particularly a veteran whose once acceptable jaw “went off” with advancing age.

IMO is different standard faults than health faults! Wry jaw is a health fault and can’t be compare with set tail...



Is a wry jaw a disqualification? or just one part of a imperfect dog...

Big winners in the UK have been Wry !! No it’s not a Disqualification !! But a Very Bad Fault . And be treated as such

When I Was Judgeing ,I was Shocked by Dog that had done Big Win-ning that were Wry !!its like A blue Eye ,that’s never overlooked ,as it’s there for all to See . But a Wry Jaw is hidden under ,the Lips of the Dog , And only a Good Judge will See it ,on the Day ,And then it’s his Call

My experience is that it does not breed true 100 % of the time. But introducing it means you will see it again and often on your favorite pup.

You can win with one on a superior dog but not as much as if he were true. If your dog is not cream of the crop, it will make it even harder to win.

I’ve bred to them. But only when the over-all offerings of the dog or bitch was more than sufficient to over look it.

And it wasn’t severe.

As far as awarding it?On the over-all best dog in the ring? Yes. Don’t like to, but you judge what is there.And body part judging has never been my MO.

What’s there to say about English Bulldogs?

Springweather is wonderfull. Lie in the sun with your belly ......tempa-ture becomes more steady great! I am happy .....my Brother also be-cause he is going to a important dogshow again. I think i told You earlier That he is a showdog. He is Very famous now a Day’s.

It all started when he was one year old and the breeder saw some po-tential in him. Well he has proven that she was right. Because he has so many titles now we stop counting.

His first title was Dutch junior Champion and his last German VDH Champion. Everytime he went to a show he told me all about it. His stories are like great adventures.

So now I am a kind of a show expert too. Because he has so many titles he is going to less shows nowadays. He is a Champion in all surround-ing countries. When he gets home I make sure he is back on earth again and doesnt walk next to his shoes.

Thats how we say it in Holland when you mean somebody is to full of himself.


The big show he is going to is the so called World Dog Show, i heard my bosses call it that way. It is all the way over in Milan.

To get in shape my bosses go practicing with him with a special teach-er, she knows all about showing and gives my brother and my boss tips to make the performance perfect. The hardest part for my brother is to stay still like my boss wants him to.

Pff That would be Notting for me i rather let them stand.

In the shows my brother has to convince the judge of the show that he is close at being the perfect english Bulldog .....The one that fits the breeding standards the most. When you are participating in these shows a judge will touch you and feel if your bones are good and your hair is healthy. They look in your mouth, in your ears etc. that’s weird when its a total stranger. The walking part of a dog is also important....it has to be smooth like a Bulldog is supposed to walk.

My brother tells me he scores high in the walking part at least that is what he hears from the judges. I am proud of my brother that he won so many prizes so far.

When my bosses and my brother go to Milan they go by car. Its a long drive but my brother doesn’t mind That. He has the back Seat for him self so there’s enough room to sleep. Our care has had a transformation. Since three Weeks we are all over the car.

Our heads are at the front, my Brother is on both sides and i am on the back. I think it is the greatest car driving on this planet. It is one of a kind.

But we were talking about going to Milan. In Milan they stay in a hotel. My brother feels like a king when he is in all those classy hotels.

They hold the door for Him, clean the room everyday and He hasn’t have to do anything. He also can sleep on the bed there. At house we don’t sleep at the bed so it feels really luxurieus to him. He always plays the same game when our bosses are a sleep. He jumps of and on the bed in the middle of the night just to tease the bosses. He scares them like hell.

The Milan show is two days. He told me there are many strange dogs at the shows. From very small to very big. From hairless to one walking hair-ball. And they come with even stranger bosses. You can tell just by look-ing who belong together. He hopes to see some dogs there he knows. Thats always cozier.

Going to shows together with your boss is good for the bonding. You get to know each other well and You achieve something together. You have to be a team. I stay at friends when they are gone. I Will send All my pos-itieve toughts to them so maybe he will win. The preparation was good sofar so i hope you will cross your fingers with me. That should help. The most important thing is they enjoy it together! Hope to see You all next time.
