The pages that follow provide just a hint of the hard work that has gone into Term 1 at Bullsbrook College. The next issue will share the adventures of the EES Camp to Kalgoorlie and the Year 6 Camp in Bridgetown—all held this week.
In Term 2 we will be rolling out some information workshops on CONNECT for parents. Don’t worry if you’re feeling unsure about it. Emails, Skoolbag information and newsletters will all include updates and information relevant to your child’s classes. Our first priority has been to CONNECT our senior students and build familiarity for staff and students involved. As more staff and students become familiar with CONNECT we will extend to other
classes. This small group trial approach recognises the different levels of experience across the school and provides time and opportunities for staff to develop their knowledge and practice. We will keep you informed as the program rolls out. More details about parent workshops will follow soon. As parents are registered on CONNECT an email is automatically generated with a P number and confidential password for you.
Staff return for Term 2 on Monday, 24 April and students return on Wednesday, 26 April.
Our annual ANZAC Ceremony will be held on Thursday, 27 April in our Sports Hall.
Best wishes to all in our community for a wonderful Term 1/Easter break.

Picture the scene. Excited students—105 in all -
(and some very excited staff) ready to experience
the magnificent world of live musical theatre. The
Bullsbrook College excursion to see the adaptation
of Matilda, presented by Dennis Kelly and award-
winning WA musician Tim Minchin, was an event
that students and staff will not forget for a long
time. Performed at the Crown Theatre, Burswood,
our students were absolutely amazed at the talent
of the performers, the lighting techniques and the
wonderful musicians. Students studying Ancient
Greek Theatre, Performing Arts, musical
instruments, plus Band and Choir members were just some of our Bullsbrook children from both the
Primary and Secondary campus invited to attend
this cultural and educational experience.
Taking learning outside of the classroom provides
real-life, eye-opening experiences for children and
there are a lot of expectations about behaviour.
Matilda herself may have dyed dad’s hair green
and glued his hat to his head, but there was
certainly no mischief from your awesome
Bullsbrook students. What a great day.

WOW! What a busy term. The children in Kindy, Pre Primary and Year 1 have been working really hard over the last ten weeks, especially in English and Mathematics.
Here is a small selection of the other special learning activities the children have had the opportunity to participate in:
* Various cooking experiences. * Traditions from around the world-making
Chinese dragon masks and cooking fried rice. * Designing and making farms in teams that
incorporate Visual Art and Technology & Enterprise.
* Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Hat Parade. * Planning a dinosaur museum for next term
which combines all learning areas. * Growing beans and sunflowers in Science. * Chinese restaurant in the role play area,
followed with an Asian lunch. * Using planning placemats to design a doctor's
surgery in the role play area. * Exploring the senses structured play with
various items that the children can smell, feel, hear, taste and see.
We would like to acknowledge the help from parents in supporting the learning in the Early Childhood area. We look forward to working with you next term.
Cathryn Mantell, Early Childhood Teacher
After two weeks of designing and creating their Easter Hats, the Kindergarten and Pre-primary students proudly marched around the Sports Hall on Wednesday to show their families. It was a great opportunity for the students to show off their fabulous creations! Thank you to all of the parents and other special visitors that attended. Your support for this event was overwhelming!

INDONESIAN PUPPET SHOW
On Monday 20 March 2017, students from Year 2
to Year 6 had an Indonesian Shadow Puppet
Show incursion by Sumardi, a professional
Indonesian puppeteer. Sumardi started to
become a puppeteer when he was 11 years old.
He has had many years of experience travelling
overseas with his puppets. We were very lucky to
be able to see his puppet show while he was
touring Australia.
Do you know that it would take a year to make
one Indonesian shadow puppet? The process of
drying, painting and putting the details on the
puppets takes a long time to finish. Traditionally,
one puppet show performance would take
around nine hours. The Dalang (puppeteer) must
perform without having food or a toilet break.
He must be able to make the distinction between
the voices of each character, handle the puppets
correctly and properly, distinguish between their
movements (especially during fight scenes) and
recite the traditional eulogy prior to the
performance. The Dalang must also be able to
correctly explain the nicknames of all the kings
and nobles mentioned in the performance and
know the writings on which the performance may
be based.

Sadly we have to say goodbye to our sister
school, SD Negeri 3 Legian. Fortunately, the
Adopt-A-School Association has given us a new
sister school. It is SMP Negeri 2 in Singaraja, Bali.
If you wish to visit our sister school during your
visit to Bali, please contact Ibu Finn for the
address and details.

Bullsbrook College has been an accredited Waste Wise School for the past two years. Every student has their own commitment to reducing waste. Unlike at home where you can place plastic, metal and paper in your yellow top lid, schools do not have the same recycling access. At school the yellow top lid is used for recycling paper and cardboard only. Block 6 students have been busy collecting our yellow lid recycling bins from blocks and placing the paper and cardboard into the big recycling bin. Classes have also received their blue recycling bin to help recycle paper in their classrooms. Thank you to the students from Block 6 for their enthusiasm in taking on the role!

On Friday 31 March in Week 9 the Primary teachers played an AFL 9’s game against a team of Year 6 students.
The game was played in very good spirits with the teachers just edging out the students to win in a tight contest.
A big thank you to Riley Coles, Ethan Seuren and Sienna Eddy who umpired and to all the staff and students who played.

Three Year 12 students—student councillors—were very fortunate to experience an unforgettable morning with the Honourable Julie Bishop, Minister for Foreign Affairs in our Federal Parliament and Mr Christian Porter, Member for Pearce and Minister for Social Services in our Federal Parliament. Chelsea Barnes, Jesse Birkin and Harrison Parker went with Mr Carpenteri to Clarkson Community College on Wednesday 5 April to be part of the Pearce Young Leaders Day, where they joined student leaders from other schools.
All student leaders were given the opportunity to listen to Ms Bishop and Mr Porter on their experiences in life and leadership. Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions of the two Cabinet Ministers. All three students asked a question each. Areas and issues ranged from concerns regarding transport for youth in and out of Bullsbrook to views on inspirational leaders. Another question posed was about what young leaders can do in order to become good leaders for the youth of today. The students gained great experience from hearing the two guests’ experiences and speaking to fellow student leaders. They had personal conversations and
photos taken with these two esteemed members of the Australian parliament.
The students did the school very proud. Their manners and the level of questions they posed were noted—so much so that it was stated to Mr Carpenteri that Bullsbrook College h a d t h e b e s t questions. It was a
unique experience that all students were able to meet the Honourable Julie Bishop and Christian Porter and to share their experiences with other young leaders at the forum.

On Tuesday 4 April, Miss Marshall’s Year 7 class
went on an excursion to the Constitutional Centre
of WA and Parliament House. We started our day
at the Constitutional Centre, where we learnt all
about the 1967 Referendum, and participated in a
mock vote. We looked at how a referendum needs
a double majority to pass, and were shocked that
of the 44 referenda in Australia, only 8 have been
successful!
We then walked down the road to Parliament
House, where we first went on a quick tour of the
building before getting to sit in the Legislative
Assembly. Our tour guide, Tina, talked to us about
how the new Parliament is about to be sworn in
before we participated in a role play about the
“Hoon” Laws. We went across the building to the
Legislative Council before we had afternoon tea
which was provided by our new local member,
Jessica Shaw, MLA Swan Hills.
It was almost time to head back to school, so we
walked back up to the Constitutional Centre to
have lunch in the gardens. It was a really
wonderful day, and we learnt a lot about how
government works!

On 7 March Ms Richards’ Year 7 class visited
Scitech as part of their science learning
programme. Students had an exciting day
experiencing the many exhibits such as Bionic
Me, How Bizarre and Rio Tinto Innovation. At Rio
Tinto students enjoyed the 3D camera, viewing
the latest x-ray technology, a 3D printer and
were challenged to create a tornado and build
structures which could withstand an earthquake.
At Bionic Me they operated a robot, navigated
their way out of a maze, moved about an
infrared screen and attempted to defy gravity by
flying. In the theatre students enjoyed a vibrant
chemical science show. The day concluded in the
CSIRO Lab with students carrying out
experiments.

YEAR 11 ROTTNEST BIOLOGY CAMP
The Year 11 ATAR Biology class recently spent three days on the island of Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) learning about the conservation strategies employed on the island. The group cycled many kilometres from point to point on the island to view and hear about management strategies and environmental strategies such as built walkways, dune brushing, snorkel trails and revegetation programs. The group visited the Wadjemup Lighthouse in the middle of the island as well as the salt lakes and many of the beautiful bays. The weather was amazing and we appreciated the bakery too! Some of the students proved their fitness by making it up the very steep road to the base of the lighthouse without stopping – quite a feat! It was a pleasure to travel with this group.

YEAR 11 COMMUNITY SURF RESCUE CERTIFICATE
On 23 March, 2017, our Year 11 Outdoor
Education students travelled down to Mullaloo
Beach to complete their Community Surf Rescue
Certificate with Life Saving W.A. Staff members
Lisa McCarthy, Laura Aldridge and Lauren Morrell
also requalified their certificates on this day to
ensure the utmost safety of our students is
maintained throughout our camps in open and
closed water. This was Bullsbrook College’s first
group of students to partake in this course
teaching communications, surf awareness, self-
rescue surf skills, rescue techniques, recognising
people in distress in the aquatic environment and
resuscitation.
All 17 students who participated passed the course
which is an outstanding effort, giving our school a
100 percent success rate. Commendations were
also given to students for their efforts and
behaviour throughout the course. A big thank you
to the life guards Brett and Jackie for instructing
us on this day.

YEAR 11 COMMUNITY SURF RESCUE CERTIFICATE
Rottnest Exhibition & Snorkelling Skills Test
From 29 March until the 31 March, 2017, our Year
11 Outdoor Education students went to Rottnest
Island to complete their Exhibition and Snorkelling
Skills Assessments. About two thirds of our
students had never been to Rottnest Island and
their jammed pack itinerary, full of educational
activities gave students an opportunity to see as
much of the island as possible in such as small
amount of time.
Day 1: Students boarded the Rottnest Express
from B-Shed Fremantle with high spirits, collected
their hired bikes and entered the shallow water of
Thomson Bay to do an introductory gear check
and practise snorkelling communication symbols
and skills, including finning technique. We then
rode our bikes through the centre of the island
past the Wadjemup Lighthouse, stopping for lunch
at the breath takingly picturesque Fish Hook Bay
and Cape Vlamingh. Here students could access a
set of binoculars and view across the Indian
Ocean. Continuing our journey, we then
completed our 1st Dive at Lady Edeline Beach at
Narrow Neck. This enabled the students to
practice their beach entry and exit skills and
finning technique as we snorkelled above masses
of sea grass reefs spotting intermittent marine life
activity. Later that afternoon we arrived at Caroline
Camp Ground after completing a minimum of
20kms of cycling. Students proved to have come
well equipped which enabled them to complete a
swift camp set up and cook up. Later that evening
students participated in some twilight fishing down
Pinky’s Beach below Bathurst Lighthouse.
Day 2: Students rode down to Bickley Point to
experience a World War II tour of Kingstown
Barracks and Bickley Point Battery. Here students
learnt of the history of the posted female and male
military personnel throughout the war. They also
had an opportunity to go inside a historical
hospital post built for injured soldiers, walk the
original railway track used by the military to supply
ammunition to the six inch guns, see the sights
from an old observation tower and explore the
remnants of the guns. We then rode to Henrietta
Rocks to view the shipwreck of the 1939 hopper
barge The Shark. Here students had 30 minutes
of down time where they had good old fashion fun
skimming stones across the ocean and chatted
amongst themselves. On arrival to Salmon Point
Mrs McCarthy taught the students how to
complete a dive log. This was a spectacular dive
where students saw an abundance of marine life
amongst the reef. Our visibility below and in front
of us whilst snorkelling was second to none.
Students then performed a Skills Assessment in
Thomson Bay in the waters around the Hotel Jetty
where a high entry, beach entry, 100m swim,
clearing of snorkel, clearing of mask, duck diving
and beach exit where assessed. Students stepped
back in time at night and were given the
opportunity to watch Moana at the old Rottnest
Island Picture Hall.
Day 3: The morning started with students singing
theme songs from Moana as they efficiently
packed up their tents, cooking equipment, luggage
and left over food. Every student then fulfilled
their responsibilities pre-assigned for the upcoming
Expedition of Little Salmon Bay. On arrival at Little
Salmon Bay student’s fulfilled their roles and set
up all the required equipment, weather reports,
first aid, rescue and dive equipment for their
Expedition Assessment. Students then talked each
other through and completed the pre-dive
information in their Dive Log. Student leaders with
the support of Mrs Aldridge, Mr McPhail and Mrs
McCarthy had opportunities to lead their peers
throughout this moderately difficult dive as we
contended with a moderate current and choppy
sea. Students did extremely well to
circumnavigate the bay between the shore and
outer reef with visibility only being 2-3 metres
directly in front and 4-5 metres below. Student
completed their post Dive Log entry with the
information they obtained from the dive and
prepared and packed up the required equipment.
14
YEAR 11 COMMUNITY SURF RESCUE CERTIFICATE
Students then were given an opportunity to ride
into Thomson Bay Settlement and spent two hours
exploring the settlement, playing mini golf or
arcade games at the Fun Park and purchasing a
well-deserved lunch and snacks from a retailer of
their choice. All students also stayed around to
pack the school trailer at the end of the excursion
at B-Shed Fremantle. Many hands make light
work. A very big thank you to Ben McCarthy who
came straight off night shift from Boddington Gold
Mine to hook up and pack the school trailer and
transport equipment and food for both the
Outdoor Education and Biology Camps to and from
the B-Shed Fremantle. He also volunteered to be
our life guard and look out for any dangerous
marine life, play Mr ‘Fix It’ and supervise students
who needed to exit the snorkelling environment
back on the beach. The help, support and efforts
of Ben McCarthy, Laura Aldridge and Jimmy
McPhail made this camp a complete success and I
thank you sincerely for your efforts.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING (VET)
Archie Marks hard at work at Landsdale Farm School
We have had a very productive term in VET and
are super proud of our students’ start to the year.
Fifty of our Year 12 students have been spending
their Fridays in the workplace, gaining knowledge
and experience of the world of work whilst also
contributing to their collection of WACE points.
Some of the workplace learning venues include
equestrian centres, automotive industry, childcare,
building and construction, local council, hospitality
industry, sport and recreation venues, to name
just a few. We are grateful to these venues for
providing our students with these opportunities,
and proud of our students’ professional conduct
each week.
Our Year 11 students are preparing to participate
in a two week block workplace learning placement
in Term Two. Throughout this term our Year 11
workplace learning students have been updating
resumes and producing career portfolios. We have
also been completing the modules for the
Worksafe Smart Move card and listening to guest
presenters from the Australian Taxation Office and
RAC. Next term we will have visits from the City of
Swan, to discuss volunteering opportunities in our
community, and Worksafe and Consumer
Protection will also deliver information to our
students.
Kym Hugo, VET Teacher
In our workplace learning class on Friday March
31, we had a guest speaker from the RAC come to
share her knowledge about road safety. She spoke
about the impact of drugs and alcohol on people’s
driving and how drivers underestimate the effects
these have on their ability to do the right thing on
the road. There were hands on activities with
simulation goggles and interactive surveys. She
shared real life stories with us about how illicit
drugs affect the way our bodies function and the
decisions people make. Overall the presentation
was a great experience.

Successful Funding for Bullsbrook
In April 2016 the Bullsbrook
Landcare Group (officially known
as North Swan Land Conservation
District Committee) developed a
Bush Management Plan with
Bullsbrook College. The aim of the Plan was to
manage the area of 8.2 hectares of bushland
adjacent to Bullsbrook College (owned by the
Education Department) - to preserve, protect
and improve this valuable bushland and create
an educational resource for students and the
wider community. The Department of Education
has had a detailed Flora Survey prepared as this
is a recognised Bush Forever Site. This has given
us invaluable information with regards to the
sensitivity of this area.
We worked closely with
Bonny Dunlop- Heague,
an former student of
Bullsbrook College, who
is currently a Natural
Resource Management
O f f i c e r w i t h t he
Chittering Landcare
Centre. Bonny investigated
possible grant opportunities to source funding
which would enable our group to achieve our
goals. Bonny has proved to be a “whizz” at grant
applications and has been successful in both
2016 and 2017 for this project! As a result, last
year we managed to complete the initial goal of
having the whole area fenced, mapped for
Dieback and explanatory signage installed.
Unfortunately the area was found to be seriously
affected by Dieback, which has made it even
more important to educate the community with
regards to the spread and treatment of Dieback.
This year Bonny was successful in attracting
$34,950 from the Western Australian
Government’s State NRM Program. This will
enable our group to undertake a Dieback
treatment program, carry out selective weed
control, install interpretive signage, plant
selective vegetation and—excitingly— employ Dr
Mike Bamford (Bamford Consulting Ecologists).
Dr Bamford will teach and work with Bullsbrook
College senior school Biology students, and
volunteers from the local community, to carry
out a Fauna Survey. This will provide us with
valuable data on what fauna lives in our
bushland now, and will be something that we
can measure against in the future; to evaluate
the Bush Management Plan as a whole.
We are also very pleased to see another former
Bul lsbrook Col lege
student Adrian Botha,
w h o , a f t e r
undertaking work
experience, is now
working as a trainee
with the Chittering
Landcare Centre.
Bullsbrook Landcare is
very happy to be
working with Bullsbrook College in this project
and we would welcome any other community
members who would be interested in learning
more about the work of Bullsbrook Landcare, our
precious bushland, and our local environment.
Our group also consistently works in consultation
with the City of Swan with regards to local
environmental issues. If you would like any
