We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.- Romans 8:28 Several years ago, in May, my parents came to visit for my graduation and commission- ing service. For my mother, it was the first time she had traveled to America. Thus, I planned our first big family trip. I planned to travel to the west-Las Vegas, many can- yons, and Death Valley. I wanted to introduce delicious American food to my parent during our travels, but I did not really know what the best in that area was. Thus, I decided to take them to my fa- vorite place, which is a burger place. On our way back to Las Vegas from Death Valley, we stopped by In-N-Out”, which is the most famous burger place in the west. I have never tried it before, yet it is very well-known place even in South Korea, so I was full of expectation. When we were about to eat food after a brief prayer, I found a very interesting thing from the wrapping paper of the hamburger, Revelation 3:20” (Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come into you and eat with you, and you with me). It felt like a treasure hunt. Also, I found another one under the fountain cup, John 3:16. What a moment for nurturing the body and the Spir- it. KETO DIET Recently, there has been a lot of hype around the keto or ketogenic diet. This diet has been around for nearly a century. It was developed to treat people with epilepsy in the 1920’s and is still used today to treat those with epilepsy who do not respond well to anti-epileptic drugs. Basically, this diet changes the way your body converts food into energy. High fats and limited carbohydrates putting a body into ketosis, a metabolic state where your body burns fat instead of the carbs for fuel. It seems that when your body is unable to get glucose from carbs, your liver converts fatty acids from your diet into ketones as an alternative source of energy. The benefit includes reduction of inflammation and promotion of weight loss. This weight loss is often rapid and substantial. The anti-inflammatory actions could protect against degenerative diseases such as Alzhei-mer’s and cancer. When going onto this diet a person can expect to experience a “keto-flu”, while the body adjusts to burning fat, and not sugar, for energy. Symptoms of this may include: insomnia, brain fog, irritability, nausea, stomach pains, sore, throat, chills, and muscle aches. This sensation sets in at the 24- to 48-hour point and generally last a few days. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables, organic grass fed dairy, saturated and monounsaturated fats, limited quantities of nuts, seeds, and legumes, limited amounts of protein and plenty of water. Many cookbooks offer recipes for the Keto diet. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, please consult with your medical provider before making any severe changes in your diet as it could alter your medication needs or precipitate changes in that health condition.

RADA Fundraiser for Mission Work The United Methodist Women are taking orders for Rada cutlery and kitchen products through October 1st. Rada products are 100% American-made and are well known for their quality. They offer a variety of kitchen utensils, cutlery, quick mixes and gift sets. All proceeds from sales will be given to mission work supported by the UMW. Catalogs are in the church office or you may contact Teresa Hammon or Jo Ann Steuri. Thank you for supporting our local and global mission work!

We're planning for our next Family Promise host week. We need a few volunteers to fill spots for family time in the evening on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (Sept 12th, 13th, and 14th). If you are available, please message us or talk to Darcey Bedward or Jo Ann Steuri. Volunteering for family time is only about 2 1/2 hrs and we'd love to give you more details if you have never volunteered in the past. Thank you for sup-porting this very worthwhile mission and thanks to those that have already filled our other volunteer spots!

Staff-Parish Relations Committee Greetings all. Thank you all for the hard work and wonderful turn-out for our potluck on August 11. A special thank you to our UMW for organizing the food. Many came from New Horizons Church in Orfordville and enjoyed some good food and great conversation. We are sad to see Danielle leave her employment at Brodhead UMC. She has given many years to the church and will always be a part of the family. Danielle requested that we not do anything publicly for her upon her leaving. We have honored that request in respect of Danielle. SPRC did give her a gift certificate to the Fireside, and the hearts with personal messages to Danielle have been given to her. Please continue to pray for Pastor Kook Ho, his family, our church staff. Welcome Lynne, we are glad you have joined our team! We look forward to watching our church grow under the leadership of Pastor Kook Ho. I would encourage folks to stop by and say hi to our newest staff members. A special thank you to Tiffany for her willingness to take on all of Christian Education. She has some great ideas with some new things and some exciting twists on the tried and true things we do in Christian education. We appreciate her hard work. Coming up…SPRC will be organiz-ing more opportunities for our congregation to get to know Pastor Kook Ho. We have a wonderful church, a great staff, many dedicated volunteers, and a terrific new Pastor. The future looks bright for Brodhead UMC. Thank you Al Schnieder, JoAnn Streuri, Ryan Moore and Linda Gissing for your tremen-dous leadership during this time of transition for our church. Well done, everyone. God Bless, Julie Hodgson SPRC Chair

My dear church family, I want to thank you for all you have done in the last 5 years to support every area of ministry at BUMC. We have accomplished a lot! I truly appreciate the kind retirement gift and gracious words of encour-agement. I encourage you to step up and see where else you can help your new staff and Pastor during this transition. Blessings, Danielle

Fall Office Hours Beginning Tuesday, September 3rd, the office will be open daily 9am-2pm. Stop in to meet our new secretary, Lynne Blinkenberg. Lynne recently retired following a career working in public television, as an EMT and early childhood educator; she lives in a 120+ year old schoolhouse near Orfordville with her spouse, a dog and too many cats. She is a lifelong fan of Agatha Christie, amassing the entire collection of her mysteries since high school. She is the mom of a professional knitter, a Jeopardy champion and an ex-CIA analyst (3 separate daughters). Lynne loves gardening but gardening doesn’t love her.

The church office will be CLOSED on Monday, September 2nd in observance of Labor Day.

Volunteers are needed to run the power point during Sunday service!

Please contact the church office if you can help out.
