Strive Incessantly! BY REV. HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE SOMETIMES THE WORDS OF THE historical Buddha can appear to be in conflict with later interpretations. An example of this can be seen in the case of effort. It is related in the Maha-Parini- bbana Sutta that Shakyamuni Buddha’s final admonition to his disciples before he died was, “Strive incessantly!” How- ever, Shinran Shonin’s teaching is one of entrusting in the “Other Power” of Ami- da Buddha. This is expressed, for ex- ample, in the Ryogemon, which begins with: “Casting off the self-power mind of the sundry practices and disciplines, we single-mindedly entrust ourselves to Amida Tathagata…” How can we rec- oncile these two viewpoints? Perhaps an answer can be found in another teaching of Shakyamuni Bud- dha, the Middle Way. This is a path be- tween extremes, found for example in the rejection of the extremes of exis- tence and non-existence. In this case, I think we can see that the teaching to “Strive incessantly” isn’t possible for the average person, myself included. And yet, the idea that therefore one needn’t strive for anything is an extreme as well. Ideally we go to the temple to chant sutras, to be with other Buddhists, and to hear the Dharma. SOMETIMES THE WORDS OF THE

oncile these two viewpoints?

Perhaps an answer can be found in

another teaching of Shakyamuni Bud-

the rejection of the extremes of exis-

think we can see that the teaching to

“Strive incessantly” isn’t possible for the

average person, myself included. And

yet, the idea that therefore one needn’t

strive for anything is an extreme as well.

Ideally we go to the temple to chant

sutras, to be with other Buddhists, and

to hear the Dharma. But it can’t stop

there – we must take what we have

heard back into our regular everyday

lives and try and apply it. It has even

been said that our “practice” is simply

“living.” And yet, this “practice” is not

living our lives mindlessly, but refl ect-

Buddhist Education News BY GAYLE NOGUCHI

CHECK IT OUT! NOW AVAILABLE

in the BCO Library: The Awareness of

Self: A Guide to the Understanding of

Shin Buddhism by Reverend Gyodo

Haguri, translated by Reverend Wil-

liam Kenshin Masuda with parable,

prologue, and epilogue by Reverend

Taitetsu Unno.

This publication is the much an-

ticipated second printing of the Eng-

lish translation of Shinshin no Ka-

kumei written by Reverend Haguri

in 1953. Like the parable of the fi re

truck siren, Reverend Haguri urges

us to awaken to the true nature of

our blind self, for this is the fi rst step

toward a life of Nembutsu which is

made possible solely by the compas-

sionate workings of Amida Buddha.

With concise clarity, Reverend Haguri

shows us that simple matters of

daily life such as our clothes, money,

and family provide a window to our

ego-centered self. This awareness

opens the way for the great inner

transformation towards authentic-

ity and the conditions for creating

a better and richer life, impacting

everyone and everything with which

we are connected. The Awareness

of Self concludes with a glossary of

Shin Buddhist terms in Japanese and

English and with biographical infor-

mation on Reverend Haguri, Reverend

Unno, and Reverend Masuda.

The BCO Library is located

directly across from the Hondo.

Jr. YBA News BY KELSEY HIROTA

HAPPY 2016! I HOPE YOU ALL HAD

a great holiday season and that you

ate lots of mochi (unless your New

Year’s resolution was to eat healthy)!

Last month, the Jr. YBA was pretty

busy. On Dec. 13, we all drove down

to the church to come and serve

udon lunch to all the mochi makers.

Thank you to all the parents who

woke up early Saturday and prepped

the ingredients, as well as those who

showed up on Mochitsuki to help

us kids boil the noodles, make the

salad, pick up the cake, and much

more. Special thanks to the Masamori

family for chairing the whole thing! It

was a great success, and we all felt

good to give back to the church. In

addition, we also ended our See’s

Candy sales. We all hope you got

to take advantage of the discount-

ed candy! If you didn’t realize how

great an opportunity it was while the

ordering window was still open, there

is always next year to order candy

from us!

This month, we are starting to get

back into the swing of things after a

long relaxing break. No big events in

January, but next month we have a lot

in store. In February, the Bay District

will be going on a one-day ski trip,

waking up at 5am, driving all the way

to Boreal (3 hour drive) and returning

at 10:30pm. We also have a Valentine’s

Day (Feb. 14) udon lunch fundraiser

planned. We hope you will be able to

make it! Proceeds go to the Jr. YBA

and will help fund the YBA’s activities.

Also, we will be chairing services and

teaching Dharma school lessons to

the Dharma school students.

That’s all for now! We will

say goodbye to 2015 sadly, but look

forward to what’s coming in the new

year. We hope this year is going to

be fi lled with lots of fun and that we

can get a lot done! There are going

to be lots of events and things go-

ing on, so follow us through 2016!

Also, we have a new Instagram ac-

count! If you have an Instagram, fol-

low the Jr. YBA at @oakland.jryba for

more instantaneous updates on our

activities! Wow, I’m getting obsolete.

See you next month for a new update

on the Jr. YBA News!

HŌ-ON Service Team 12 BY GARY TOMINAGA

TEAM 12 MAINTAINED THE LEVEL OF

excellence already accomplished

by Teams 3 to 11. We met after the

Eitaikyo Service in November, and

minasan responded.

Special thanks to Mr. Makoto

Otsuka, who continues to be BCO’s

Chief Gardening Executive quietly

and behind the scenes. In addition

to his much needed professional

gardening expertise, he also picks up

and disposes of litter and leaves. This

makes garden/grounds maintenance

so much less diffi cult for all our Ho-

On Service Teams.

Special thanks to Ms. Namie

Naito, for again making and donating

her amai kuromame for (New Year’s

Eve) oumisoka.

Special thanks to Ms. Gloria

Fujimoto, for again donating umai

unshu satsuma mikan for (New Year’s

Eve) oumisoka.

Special thanks to those Jr. YBA

members and parents who willingly

volunteered to assist us in the

Issei Kaikan during mochitsuki to

prepare the Busshin for mailing. Please

remember that the Jr. YBA and their

parents (and not Team 12) were

already committed that very same

day to make and serve that (always)

oishii udon lunch.

Last but certainly not least, dou-

mo arigatou gozaimashita and osewa

ni narimashita to those Keirokai and

other Ho-On Service Team members

who willingly volunteered to guide

and assist us at various times during

the month.

Team 12 members unselfi shly

re-prioritized their personal sched-

ules when needed. This occurred

even on unexpected, short notice.

The month of December is always

isogashii for everyone. Nevertheless,

all our required duties were suffi cient-

ly staffed.

Team 12 members compassion-

ately helped other Ho-On Teams

during the year. They never used this

as an excuse to not meet their Team

12 obligations.

Team 12 members cooperatively,

thoughtfully and patiently helped

each other, in addition to everyone

else.

Tanoshikatta, while we effectively

and effi ciently fulfi lled our responsi-

bilities.

HŌ-ON Service TeamsTHE HO-ON SERVICE TEAMS ARE LISTED BELOW. IF YOU DO NOT SEE YOUR NAME LISTED AND YOU WOULD

like to help on a team, please call the offi ce (510) 832-5988 or email offi [email protected]. We welcome all

members and friends of the BCO to be part of this Ho-On, so feel free to invite your children and extended

family to help out on the teams. Please note that these service teams do not affect our Nikkoland Festival

shifts or our Obon Festival shifts. Your help at these two major fundraisers is still vital to the life of our church.

FEBRUARY 20164

WE WATCHED THE MOVIE, “NINETY

nine years of Love”, after lunch fol-

lowing our general meeting, which

was Thursday Dec. 17, but were unable

to complete, so I believe we will need

to continue on until we see the word

“END” at the completion of the pic-

ture which will probably be during our

fi rst meet of 2016, on January 7. It’s

rather long, don’t you think? But it is

interesting, even though to most of us

the whole story is quite familiar.

The Momiji kai members wish to

extend our “thank you” to our sensei

and the following affi liated members

for their time and effort in helping the

organization with the activities dur-

ing the past year. Firstly, thank you to

our Rev. Harry Bridge for his untiring

assistance including the a.m. service,

his cheerful acceptance of anything

we ask of him, to Patti Hirota for her

untiring Yoga lessons in trying to keep

us all healthy and active, to Renie Grohl

in helping us keep our minds working

with her knitting lessons and to Mrs.

Jean Nakazono for her untiring efforts

in the planning and working all hours

trying her best to keep us all active. And

our sincere thanks to you all.

Now we look forward to a new year

2016. We wish everyone a great and

healthy NEW YEAR.

We do observe the death of Shakyamuni

Buddha on Nirvana Day (Feb.

it isn’t one of our major services, we

can still take inspiration from Shakya-

and parents for coordinating and serv-

ing delicious udon lunch. Thank you all

very much!

As I enter my second year as

Board President, I want to focus

on growth and expansion of the

date the site and make it easy to

navigate for members, as well as

visitors. I have looked at a num-

ber of other BCA temples websites

and have some ideas that we can

implement on our site. This project

is being chaired by Board member

Gary Lawrence. If you have any

thoughts or would like to be part of

this project, please let me know.

Please welcome four new mem-

bers to BCO’s Board of Directors

for 2016: Kevin Chang, Lynn Chung,

Jeffrey Hisaoka and George Kamita.

I also want to acknowledge and thank

the following for serving on the BCO

Board: Norm Abrahamson, Mary Hiro-

moto, Gayle Inada and Doris Okano.

graciously accepted chairing HOST
