Opening Hymn: Gather Your People
R. Gather your people, O Lord. Gather your people, O Lord. One
bread, one body, one spirit of love. Gather your people, O Lord
1. Draw us forth to the table of life: brothers and sisters, each of us
called to walk in your light. R.
2. We are parts of the body of Christ, needing each other, each of the
gifts the Spirit provides. R.
Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you
thanks for your great glory. Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty
Father. Lord Jesus Christ, only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father. You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer; you are seated at
the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the
Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus
Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Profession of Faith
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God
from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not
made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the
Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake
he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He
ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He
will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His
kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the
giver of life who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the
Father and Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the
prophets. I believe in one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church. I
confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Responsorial Psalm: I shall live in the house of the Lord all the
days of my life.
Communion Song: Taste and See
R: Taste and see, O taste and see, taste and see the goodness of
God.
1. Glory glory to God most high, glory blessing and praise. With
one voice, O people, rejoice in our God, who hears the cry of all in
need. R.
2. Who has fashioned the earth and sky, who created the deep,
who exalts the lowly and sets captives free, who opens the door to
all those who seek. R.
3. Oh, the love of God! Become flesh of our flesh, so that we
might live in glory. R.

Song of Sending Forth: We Belong To You
R. We belong to you, O Lord of our longing, we belong to you. In
our daily living, dying and rising we belong to you.
1. In the waters of your mercy, when the old becomes the new,
souls united in the myst’ry: we belong to you. R.
2. Filled with gifts and filled with goodness, spirit breathing life
into all who seek to find their purpose: we belong to you. R.
October 11, 2020
Often the Responsorial Refrain after the 1st reading at Mass is a
statement of faith like: “The Lord is kind and merciful.” Two weeks ago it was a
petition: “Remember your mercies O Lord.” Today’s response to Isaiah’s
vision of God’s victory banquet beyond death — I shall live in the house
of the Lord all the days of my life”—is stated as a commitment. When I
can choose to live under the roof of His ways of love and life together, or
shelter under my own ways and resources, I will choose the ways Jesus
showed come from our Heavenly Father’s house.
To live in the house of the Lord is to act out of the awareness that
because God has overcome death, there is an abundance of life before me. I
will then make room at the table of life God has set. I won’t fear my
experience of God’s goodness will be less, for your being with me.
Ultimately, concern for what I might lose out on in life that puts us in
competition, and continues the social sins and disrespect for other human lives
that move one out from under the Father’s roof. The unborn child is
excluded if he or she will take from the life I imagine I’ll have, or have to
give. I’ll let you choose euthanasia if you feel life holds suffering that
takes from life rather than adds to it. I can exclude the refugee and
immigrant if there is not enough life worth living for us all to go around.
Etc. etc. etc. If I’m excluding others from life in the Lord’s house, what
I’ll find is that I’m the one who has moved out!
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship is the US Bishops’
guidance for the issues before our country this election season. Its goal is
to shape one’s conscience so my election values are grounded in a sense of
the abundance of life to share, rather than a scarcity. It also seeks to
inform Catholics so one can weigh why I’m voting for this candidate’s values
rather than that one’s against the priorities of life in the house of the Lord.
You will find it at https://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-
citizenship/upload/forming-consciences-for-faithful-citizenship.pdf or on
our parish website. It warrants your attention!
We all know none of the parties presents candidates supportive of all our
Faith-tradition’s values. So then, the choice for one or the other
candidate carries with it a further commitment: I will work to shape what
in my party or candidate excludes others from the abundance of life in
the house of the Lord. I would argue that to settle for less is to move out
myself. Do you want to spend the rest of your days anywhere else?
