FROM THE MAILBA G comes this news : "On jDecember 5, 1966 , representatives of the sixdistricts involved in the Center Moriches-Eastportcentralization area , including Center Moriches ,East Moriches , Eastport , South Manor , East Manorand West Manor , met at Albany with State Educa-tion Department representatives to initiate a pro-posed reorganization study.

The trustees of the six districts received thestudy reports at a meeting held on Monday nightat the East Moriches school.

"It was generally agreed by those present tohave individual boards review the written reportand this to be followed by a meeting the latterpart of May with all districts participating."

* * *IT'S BUDGET TIME -- On Tuesday and Wednes-

day of next week , area residents will make an im-portant decision : Will they approve or reject theproposed school district budgets submitted by themembers of the Boards of Education in the dis-tricts in which these residents live ?

The voters have two choices. One, they can ap-prove the proposed budgets , accepting the fact thatthe cost of education becomes greater and greatereach year and until someone , somewhere findsan answer to this problem of , higher educationalcosts md higher tax rates , the taxpayer has toshoulder the burden.

Or, the taxpayer can reject the bud get. Theproblem is here , however , that a rejection of theproposed budget is not the final answer to theproblem. The schools must remain open to supplythe educational needs of district children.

The rejection of a budget brings into being anAusterity Budget , mandated by the State , to carryon the financial obligations of the district.

What effect would an Austerity Budget ha ve uponthe school district? Here , in words shared by twolocal school administrators , is an answer: "Whileit is not possible to forecast exactly which itemswould be removed from the defeated budget by theState Education Department in setting up a con-tingency budget , it does seem certain that the fol-lowing types of items would certainly be elim-inated: Interscholastic athletics , school lunch pro-gram , extracurricular activities , summer highschool classes , adult education , summer music pro-gram , field trip transportation , and all equipment ,materials and services not held to be necessaryfor running a minimum type of program. Outsidegroups such as girl scouts , little league or powersquadron could not use school facilities."

Anyway you look at it , school budgets are aproblem. Approved budgets can mean an increasein taxes , an unhappy but a true fact.

Defeated budgets can mean a decrease in the ed-ucational quality of the district , and have a greateffect upon the children the district serves.

Local voters do indeed have an important de-cision to make next week!
