The 89th Annual Meeting of TheSons of the Republic of Texas is fastapproaching. We are making plansfor a great meeting at The TremontHouse in Galveston, Texas. Ourheadquarters will be located in theshadows of the well known andfamous Galveston “Strand District.”Ladies, you can shop till you drop ifyou are so inclined. The seafood isalways at the top of the menu, with
many excellent places to dine. Thereare many sights to see, and Galvestonhas worked very hard to put things inorder after the hurricane, as moststores, restaurants and hotels arecompletely remodeled. I believe youwill be amazed at what you see whenyou come back to the city by the sea.Make plans now to attend. Additionalinformation is available in this issueof The Texian. We are lookingforward to seeing everyone at theAnnual Meeting!

The 89th Annual Meeting of The Sons of the Republic of Texas will be held at the The Tremont House, 2300Ships Mechanic Row, in Galveston. The host chapter, Sydney Sherman Chapter #2, will be assisted by San JacintoChapter #1 and Sam Houston Chapter #38. During business meetings for members, area attractions for spouses andguests include the Historic Strand District, Moody Mansion and Museum, Moody Gardens, Mardi Gras Museum,Texas Seaport Museum and Galveston Beach. Between meetings, shopping and sight seeing, relax in the beautifullyrestored atrium lobby of The Tremont House, the 1872 Toujouse Bar, or enjoy coffee/tea and biscotti in the casualTremont Cafe.
Plan to arrive at the hotel in time for the Hospitality Room, located in the Belmont Suite, open at 4:30 p.m. onFriday afternoon; after enjoying hors d’oeuvres, beverages and SRT fellowship, dinner is on your own at yourfavorite restaurant in Galveston.
The Executive Committee meets at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, and any member is welcome to attend butmay not vote. The Knights of the Order of San Jacinto meets at 11:00 a.m. The Summerfield G. Roberts AwardLuncheon begins at 12:00 noon, and the winning book award, President General’s List, Bachman Award, Educatorof the Year and Chapter Archives Award will be presented. Chapters must submit their Chapter Archives Awardentries for judging not later than the end of the Saturday morning Executive Committee meeting.

Meeting to the office in Bay City; the cut-off date is March

• Be thinking about submitting a nomination for the Educator
of the Year Award to be presented at the Annual Meeting in
2011. Deadline is February 11, 2011. Criteria for the award
is available from the National Office.
• ATTENTION CHAPTER PRESIDENTS: Remember to
send in your Annual Reports by February 1, 2011. This will
determine whether your chapter will receive a rebate check.
Your report must include the new officers with mailing
addresses, phone numbers and email addresses along with
your activities during the year, as well as a financial statement.
• Please note that any applicants for membership in the SRT
must have three signatures of recommending SRT members. It
is not necessary, if the applicant lives out of state, but every
applicant should affiliate with a chapter. This does not mean
that they will have to attend meetings. Application must be
typed and notarized.
• The Texian is YOUR newsletter. I need YOUR help with
articles and pictures. If your chapter has or will be celebrating
any events for the 175th Anniversary this year or any other
events, PLEASE email me at [email protected]. I will be
putting the April issue together for publication. Deadline is
April 15th. San Jacinto Day will be accepted through April
25.
175th Anniversary of Texas Independence. There are many activities around the state honoring those who foughtfor our Independence. You can attend programs in your area of the state. If you don’t have an event on TexasIndependence Day, local chapters should plan one. It will be a great time to be more active in school programs tohelp our students recognize and celebrate Texas Independence Day on March 2nd, San Jacinto Day on April 21st andother Texas historical dates.

At 2:00 p.m., the annual meeting of the membership will convene, and officers for the term 2011-12 will beelected.
The Annual Awards Banquet will begin at 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening. The evening will consist of awards,induction of Honorary members James P. Bevill and Dr. Patrick Nolan, installation of officers, and investiture ofthe Honorable Jerry Patterson as a Knight of the Order of San Jacinto. Honorary member Dr. Gregg Dimmickwas inducted on January 6, 2011, at a special ceremony in West Columbia.
The final meeting of the weekend will be the Executive Meeting at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.In this issue, please find the SRT Registration Form, paying special attention to the TWO reservation
deadlines:- Make your hotel reservation separately with The Tremont House by March 10,
making sure to ask for the SRT block and special rate.- Send your SRT Registration Form to SRT, to be received not later than March
18; if attending the luncheon and/or evening banquet, be sure to specify yourchoice of entree. Registration is in advance only, as no tickets can be sold at thedoor.

CEREMONY MARKING 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OFSAN JACINTO SET FOR APRIL 21 AT 11 AM
All SRT members and guests are invited to attend the official State of Texas
ceremony commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto.
The victory at San Jacinto secured Texas' independence and led to the creation of
the Republic which lasted for ten years.
The ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 21 at 11 a.m. at the San Jacinto
Monument. It is held under the auspices of the San Jacinto Historical Advisory
Board. The 2011 Planning Committee is co-chaired by Nancy Burch and Clay
Fisher. The event is free and open to the public.
There will be a principal speaker (the Governor and Lieutenant Governor
have been invited), music from area bands, presentation of colors, scholarship
awards from the SRT and DRT, laying of a memorial wreath, and firing of muskets
by The Texas Army under the command of Sam Houston IV. Sam will also read
General Houston's Battle Analysis.
Ron Stone, Jr., returns this year as Master of Ceremonies. A commemorative
medal, first introduced in 2003, will again be available for purchase.
Please mark your calendars, and plan to attend this milestone anniversary.

TOMBALL PARADE 2010The San Jacinto and Lone Star Chapters of The Sons of the Republic of Texas were honored to participate
again this year in the 45th Annual Tomball Holiday Parade. The Tomball Holiday Parade is the traditional kick-offfor Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s activities in the Tomball area. It is one of the largest volunteer-produced parades in the state of Texas. The parade consists of marching bands, drill teams, floats, pageant contestantsand equestrian participants. With more than 180 entries from around the state attracting some 40,000 spectators,it takes over two hours to view the entire parade.
The weather could not have cooperated more. President General Sam F. Clark, KSJ, was driven in a vintageOldsmobile convertible generously provided by Denton Bryant. The Lone Star Volunteers showed up pulling“Rolling Thunder,” which was a true delight for the kids.
The entire event is great exposure for the Sons, and it is a true honor to promote Texas history and the SRTorganization.

WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS

According to the Orange County, Texas,TheRecordLive, published January 17, 2011, U.S.Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison will speak at a Sundayafternoon, February 27, 2011, commemorativeprogram at Washington-on-the-Brazos State HistoricSite. The program begins at 1 p.m. in the park’samphitheater, part of a free two-day festival from 10a.m. to 5 p.m. February 26-27. Sen. Hutchison is adescendant of Texas Declaration of Independencesigner Charles Taylor. Taylor was one of 59 delegateswho attended the March 1-17, 1836, IndependenceConvention at Washington.
Historical re-enactors and descendants of theoriginal signers of the Texas Declaration ofIndependence will be present for this year’s historiccelebration. Washington-on-the-Brazos StateHistoric Site is located between Brenham andNavasota off State Hwy. 105 and FM 1155. For moreinformation, call (936) 878-2214.
FORTY-THIRD ANNUAL PRESIDIO LA BAHIA AWARDSThe Forty-Third annual Presidio La Bahia Awards were held on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. in
the Our Lady of Loreto Chapel just outside Goliad. The annual award program was established in 1968 throughthe generosity of Mrs. Kathryn Stoner O’Connor as an annual literary award. The O’Connor Foundation was alsoresponsible for restoring the Presidio La Bahia as a museum and a Texas shrine. The purpose of the award is topromote suitable preservation of relics, appropriate dissemination of data, and research into our Texas heritage,with particular attention to the Spanish Colonial period.
This year’s program, along with this being the 175th anniversary of Texas, began with the firing of cannon andmuskets thanks to members of the “Texas Dare-Devils.” Entering the chapel to the beat of a drum behind theKnights of the Order of San Jacinto Flag, were President General Sam F. Clark, KSJ, and Presidio Chairman O.Scott Dunbar, KSJ, escorting Mr. A. Ray Stephens, 1st Place Book Award winner for “Texas A Historical Atlas.”SRT members dressed in period clothing, other members of the KSJ, and Newton Warzecha, KSJ, Director, PresidioLa Bahia. Peaches Kelly sang “Amazing Grace” as Billy Johnson, KSJ-Knight Commander carried theRemembrance Candle and Newton Warzecha carried the Goliad Flag.
Mr. Stephens gave a very entertaining highlight of his book, and afterwards, all 25 books he brought were soldand signed by him. The 2nd Place Book Award – “Tejano Leadership in Mexican and Revolutionary Texas” was byDr. Jesus F de la Teja; due to other commitments, he was unable to attend.
The program ended with Peaches leading all present in singing Christmas carols.The unfortunate part of this great program which had its beginning 43 years ago is that, due to the economy, the
SRT has had to take over the funding of this most worthy program. Funding is vital for the program to continue.This program has a benefactor who has stepped forward and is willing to match dollar for dollar, all monies up to$25,000.00.
Even if you have never been able to attend due to travel distance or timing, you can now make this programcontinue. Here’s how!
On March 27, 2011, at 10 a.m., we will mark the 175th remembrance of the Goliad Massacre. On that day theSRT will place a wreath in honor of those fallen men. A special wreath will be presented at the Fannin Monumentnext to the Presidio by a member of The Knights of the Order of San Jacinto. On this wreath you may have yourancestor’s name added along with any other person you would like to have remembered on this once-in-a-lifetime175th anniversary of the Goliad Massacre. Following this remembrance, a Non-Dinner-Dinner will be observed.The Non-Dinner-Dinner and one name placement on the special wreath is only $25.00. The wreath placement isonly $10.00 for each listing. In addition if you choose, you and one other person may carry and present your ownspecial Wreath for only $150.00. This includes the cost of the wreath, the Non-Dinner-Dinner and all of yourTexas ancestors listed. If you are unable to present your wreath, we will have a Knight present it for you and sendyou a photo as a “Treasured Keepsake.” The thing to remember here is you can help. Everyone who gives willalso have that ancestor’s name listed in The Texian along with a photo of the wreath. All money you give will bematched by our benefactor, and that will go a long way in keeping this program alive.
Please make the check out to SRT. On the bottom write “Wreath,” along with the name or names you wantremembered. Send your check to the SRT office in Bay City. If you are going to want your own special wreath,please include your address, phone and or email so we may contact you with the details of the program on March27, 2011.

TAKE A TOUR THROUGH BRAZORIA COUNTY HISTORYTexas 175th Anniversary Tour
Travel back in time to the early days of Colonial Texas and see the places where the Republic of Texas wasborn. for the Chapter Archives Book to be judged in Galveston at the 89th Annual Meeting, April 1-3, 2011. The competitionwill include calendar year chapter activities, from January 1, 2010, through December 31, 2010.
Thanks to Heart of Texas District Representative Ken Pheiffer for bringing to the attention of the ExecutiveCommittee at the September 2010, quarterly meeting that all other SRT reports are on a calendar year basis. Mr.Pheiffer suggested that it would be easier for all chapters to maintain one archives book for one complete year,thereby affording chapters more lead time for preparation of their books before the Annual Meeting each spring.Input from other chapter leaders in attendance also suggested changing the guidelines to include material from theweekend of the Annual Meeting.
For ease of transition, entries for the 2010 Chapter Archives Award should include ALL activities of the chapterfrom January 1, 2010, through December 31, 2010. For chapters with entries at the 88th Annual Meeting in Tyler,it should be easy to transfer January through March 2010 entries to new books AND include the 88th AnnualMeeting photos and participation in Tyler. For this transition period, there may be chapters that had not participatedin the contest in Tyler but planned to have an entry for the upcoming competition in Galveston. For chapterswithout entries at the last competition in Tyler in 2010, judges will be instructed to factor in that potential disparityand not count off for absence of January 2010, through the 88th Annual Meeting.

According to the Orange County, Texas,TheRecordLive, published January 17, 2011, U.S.Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison will speak at a Sundayafternoon, February 27, 2011, commemorativeprogram at Washington-on-the-Brazos State HistoricSite. The program begins at 1 p.m. in the park’samphitheater, part of a free two-day festival from 10a.m. to 5 p.m. February 26-27. Sen. Hutchison is adescendant of Texas Declaration of Independencesigner Charles Taylor. Taylor was one of 59 delegateswho attended the March 1-17, 1836, IndependenceConvention at Washington.
Historical re-enactors and descendants of theoriginal signers of the Texas Declaration ofIndependence will be present for this year’s historiccelebration. FORTY-THIRD ANNUAL PRESIDIO LA BAHIA AWARDSThe Forty-Third annual Presidio La Bahia Awards were held on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. in
the Our Lady of Loreto Chapel just outside Goliad. The annual award program was established in 1968 throughthe generosity of Mrs. Kathryn Stoner O’Connor as an annual literary award. The O’Connor Foundation was alsoresponsible for restoring the Presidio La Bahia as a museum and a Texas shrine. The purpose of the award is topromote suitable preservation of relics, appropriate dissemination of data, and research into our Texas heritage,with particular attention to the Spanish Colonial period.
This year’s program, along with this being the 175th anniversary of Texas, began with the firing of cannon andmuskets thanks to members of the “Texas Dare-Devils.” Entering the chapel to the beat of a drum behind theKnights of the Order of San Jacinto Flag, were President General Sam F. Clark, KSJ, and Presidio Chairman O.Scott Dunbar, KSJ, escorting Mr. A. Ray Stephens, 1st Place Book Award winner for “Texas A Historical Atlas.”SRT members dressed in period clothing, other members of the KSJ, and Newton Warzecha, KSJ, Director, PresidioLa Bahia. Peaches Kelly sang “Amazing Grace” as Billy Johnson, KSJ-Knight Commander carried theRemembrance Candle and Newton Warzecha carried the Goliad Flag.
Mr. Stephens gave a very entertaining highlight of his book, and afterwards, all 25 books he brought were soldand signed by him. The 2nd Place Book Award – “Tejano Leadership in Mexican and Revolutionary Texas” was byDr. Jesus F de la Teja; due to other commitments, he was unable to attend.
The program ended with Peaches leading all present in singing Christmas carols.The unfortunate part of this great program which had its beginning 43 years ago is that, due to the economy, the
SRT has had to take over the funding of this most worthy program. Funding is vital for the program to continue.This program has a benefactor who has stepped forward and is willing to match dollar for dollar, all monies up to$25,000.00.

On March 27, 2011, at 10 a.m., we will mark the 175th remembrance of the Goliad Massacre. On that day theSRT will place a wreath in honor of those fallen men. A special wreath will be presented at the Fannin Monumentnext to the Presidio by a member of The Knights of the Order of San Jacinto. On this wreath you may have yourancestor’s name added along with any other person you would like to have remembered on this once-in-a-lifetime175th anniversary of the Goliad Massacre. Following this remembrance, a Non-Dinner-Dinner will be observed.The Non-Dinner-Dinner and one name placement on the special wreath is only $25.00. The wreath placement isonly $10.00 for each listing. In addition if you choose, you and one other person may carry and present your ownspecial Wreath for only $150.00. This includes the cost of the wreath, the Non-Dinner-Dinner and all of yourTexas ancestors listed. If you are unable to present your wreath, we will have a Knight present it for you and sendyou a photo as a “Treasured Keepsake.” The thing to remember here is you can help. Everyone who gives willalso have that ancestor’s name listed in The Texian along with a photo of the wreath. All money you give will bematched by our benefactor, and that will go a long way in keeping this program alive.

TOMBALL PARADE 2010The San Jacinto and Lone Star Chapters of The Sons of the Republic of Texas were honored to participate
again this year in the 45th Annual Tomball Holiday Parade. The Tomball Holiday Parade is the traditional kick-offfor Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s activities in the Tomball area. It is one of the largest volunteer-produced parades in the state of Texas. The parade consists of marching bands, drill teams, floats, pageant contestantsand equestrian participants. With more than 180 entries from around the state attracting some 40,000 spectators,it takes over two hours to view the entire parade.
The weather could not have cooperated more. President General Sam F. Clark, KSJ, was driven in a vintageOldsmobile convertible generously provided by Denton Bryant. The Lone Star Volunteers showed up pulling“Rolling Thunder,” which was a true delight for the kids.
The entire event is great exposure for the Sons, and it is a true honor to promote Texas history and the SRTorganization.

CEREMONY MARKING 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OFSAN JACINTO SET FOR APRIL 21 AT 11 AM
All SRT members and guests are invited to attend the official State of Texas
ceremony commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto.
The victory at San Jacinto secured Texas' independence and led to the creation of
the Republic which lasted for ten years.
The ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 21 at 11 a.m. at the San Jacinto
Monument. It is held under the auspices of the San Jacinto Historical Advisory
Board. The 2011 Planning Committee is co-chaired by Nancy Burch and Clay
Fisher. The event is free and open to the public.
There will be a principal speaker (the Governor and Lieutenant Governor
have been invited), music from area bands, presentation of colors, scholarship
awards from the SRT and DRT, laying of a memorial wreath, and firing of muskets
by The Texas Army under the command of Sam Houston IV. Sam will also read
General Houston's Battle Analysis.
Ron Stone, Jr., returns this year as Master of Ceremonies. A commemorative
medal, first introduced in 2003, will again be available for purchase.
Please mark your calendars, and plan to attend this milestone anniversary.

your activities during the year, as well as a financial statement.
• Please note that any applicants for membership in the SRT
must have three signatures of recommending SRT members. It
is not necessary, if the applicant lives out of state, but every
applicant should affiliate with a chapter. This does not mean
that they will have to attend meetings. Application must be
typed and notarized.

articles and pictures. If your chapter has or will be celebrating
any events for the 175th Anniversary this year or any other

If you don’t have an event on TexasIndependence Day, local chapters should plan one. It will be a great time to be more active in school programs tohelp our students recognize and celebrate Texas Independence Day on March 2nd, San Jacinto Day on April 21st andother Texas historical dates.

I had the honor to swear in ournewest Honorary member, Dr. GreggDimmick, on January 6, 2011, at theStephen F. Austin Chapter meeting inWest Columbia. The meeting was wellattended by chapter members, wives,prospective members and other SRTchapters members. Dr. Dimmick wasthe guest speaker. The 89th Annual Meeting of TheSons of the Republic of Texas is fastapproaching. We are making plansfor a great meeting at The TremontHouse in Galveston, Texas. Ourheadquarters will be located in theshadows of the well known andfamous Galveston “Strand District.”Ladies, you can shop till you drop ifyou are so inclined. The seafood isalways at the top of the menu, with
many excellent places to dine. Thereare many sights to see, and Galvestonhas worked very hard to put things inorder after the hurricane, as moststores, restaurants and hotels arecompletely remodeled. I believe youwill be amazed at what you see whenyou come back to the city by the sea.Make plans now to attend. Additionalinformation is available in this issueof The Texian. We are lookingforward to seeing everyone at theAnnual Meeting!

The 89th Annual Meeting of The Sons of the Republic of Texas will be held at the The Tremont House, 2300Ships Mechanic Row, in Galveston. The host chapter, Sydney Sherman Chapter #2, will be assisted by San JacintoChapter #1 and Sam Houston Chapter #38. During business meetings for members, area attractions for spouses andguests include the Historic Strand District, Moody Mansion and Museum, Moody Gardens, Mardi Gras Museum,Texas Seaport Museum and Galveston Beach. Between meetings, shopping and sight seeing, relax in the beautifullyrestored atrium lobby of The Tremont House, the 1872 Toujouse Bar, or enjoy coffee/tea and biscotti in the casualTremont Cafe.
Plan to arrive at the hotel in time for the Hospitality Room, located in the Belmont Suite, open at 4:30 p.m. onFriday afternoon; after enjoying hors d’oeuvres, beverages and SRT fellowship, dinner is on your own at yourfavorite restaurant in Galveston.
The Executive Committee meets at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, and any member is welcome to attend butmay not vote. The Knights of the Order of San Jacinto meets at 11:00 a.m. The Summerfield G. Roberts AwardLuncheon begins at 12:00 noon, and the winning book award, President General’s List, Bachman Award, Educatorof the Year and Chapter Archives Award will be presented. Chapters must submit their Chapter Archives Awardentries for judging not later than the end of the Saturday morning Executive Committee meeting.
