the September quarterly meeting the membership has increased another 41 members. Ed Heath, who is chair-man of the SRT O’Conner Spanish Texas document and Book Collection, brought three posters from the col-lection. The posters have been copied and laminated. Ed will have three different posters at the next meeting. These posters help a lot in understanding the Spanish-Texas history.

i would like to thank the five Past President General’s who attended the meeting. They are PPG Sir Knight david Hanover, PPG Sir Knight Sam Clark, PPG Sir Knight Leonard Cloud, PPG Sir Knight Scott dunbar, and PPG Sir Knight Joe Ginn. The experience, love, and understanding of the SRT the PPG’s, along with other living PPG’s, is tremendous. if you have the chance to sit down with one of these gentlemen, do so. Ask ques-tions and listen. You will learn a lot about the history of the SRT and Texas.

Congratulations, to the Texian navy day Committee for having a fine ceremony on September 19th, 2015. Thanks to dr. Frank de la Teja for his speech on “The Texas navy in the Yucatan Revolt”. Also recognized were the Alamo Chapter members and citizens of Gonzales who participated in the production of a medal, designed by Jason Chall, Alamo Chapter ( descendant of John McCoy whose sons fought at the Alamo and San Jacinto). The medal memorializes the “immortal 32” from Gonzales who answered W.B. Travis’ call for reinforcements in 1836.

From Sept. 19 through Sept. 30, in the City of Fort Worth, various organizations showed their support for our naval men and women assigned to the city’s name sake, the uSS Fort Worth. September is the 3rd anniversary of this ship’s life in the service of the uS navy. The Ephraim M. daggett Chapter, Fort Worth, of The Sons of the Republic of Texas sponsored a breakfast on Monday, September 21, 2015, honoring three Sailors of the Year selected by the Ship’s Officers.

Also making presentations was the Admiral Chester W. nimitz Squadron of the Texas navy Association. Both organizations had gift presentations to make to each of the three Sailors of the Year. The Congressional mem-ber leading the efforts in the naming of the high tech naval fighting ship after the City of Fort Worth was Texas Congressional Member, Kay Granger, former mayor of Fort Worth. She gave the keynote address for the occa-sion.

Supportive citizens from both organizations and some from the general population gathered for breakfast and awards at the Woodhaven Country Club, Fort Worth, on Monday, September 21, 2015.

2015 Texian naVy day RePORT: The Texian navy day Celebration sponsored by The Sons of the Republic of Texas was again held aboard the uSS Texas Battleship located near the San Jacinto Monument to a nice crowd of compatriots. The Color Guard was led by Tom Green, KSJ, and the St. Thomas Episcopal School Pipe Band assisted. The deer Park High School Orchestra played the opening music to start the occasion. invocation was given by Joe R. davidson, KSJ. Curt Osborne gave a welcoming speech and made proper introductions then turned the celebration over to the Master of Ceremonies, Bob Steakley, KSJ. One of the first items of business when the Sam Houston Chapter was formed in 1987 was to initiate the “Out-standing Sailors of the Year Award.” The winners this year are Chief Cherise T. Chase of the virgin islands and the runner-up Chief Keaton R. Bragan of Ft. Worth, Texas. These are two great American compatriots and our Chapter is very proud to be associated with them. The winner received $1000.00 from us and the runner-up re-ceived $500.00. Short excerpts were read from their biographies. it is amazing the talent these two sailors have. After the principal speaker, dr. Jesus Francisco de La Teja from Southwest Texas State university of San Mar-cos, Texas, completed his speech, the ceremony was closed with Lone Star volunteers, followed by the Bene-diction. The Colors were then retired. david G. Whitaker, PresidentSam Houston Chapter 38, SRTSeptember 19, 2015
