IN AND AROUND TEXAS
The Alamo Chapter of The Sons of The Republic of Texas participated in the Pilgrimage to the Alamo on
March 11th, 2011. The Pilgrimage to the Alamo, is an event that pays homage to the Alamo heroes and has been
held annually by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas since 1925.
Monday afternoon a few hundred people were waiting in front of the Alamo as the names of the Alamo
heroes, along with their birthplace, were called out.
The procession, which formed several blocks away, began making its way toward the Alamo. The DRT &
SRT along with dozens of historic, civic, military and school groups formed the slow and somber line as it
entered the plaza from the south. All of Fiesta’s dignitaries were there. One by one, members of each organiza-
tion laid a wreath on the lawn in front of the Alamo. All you could hear were the names being called.
After the wreaths were placed, and the pledge of allegiance to the
United States and Texas were recited a short program honored those
who died at this place 175 years ago.
“Right here on this hallowed ground, the legacy and heritage of
Texas, and indeed of our nation can be felt in the soil, the air and in
the hearts of the people of this great state,”. “The spirit of the men
who believed in something bigger than themselves, and who fought
and who bravely died here to attain it, endures here forever.”

Picture taken in front of the Stephen F. Austin Oak Treeplanted at the Commissioners Court in New Braunfels, Texas.
Steve Stapleton of New Braunfels and a member of the Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels Chapter #50 of the Sons
of the Republic of Texas was honored recently by the Star of the Republic Museum. Steve received a Certificate
of Appreciation and the local chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas received a donation from the Washing-
ton-on-the-Brazos State Park Association in recognition of the many hours he contributed to the Adopt-a-Signer
Project sponsored by the Museum.
Mr. Stapleton and 42 other volunteers from 21 organizations spent the last year researching the lineage of the 59
delegates who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Stapleton researched the lineage of General Sam
Houston who defeated Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto and was also the first president of the Republic of
Texas. The results of their work can be seen on the Museum’s website at www.starmuseum.org.
In addition to documenting the lineage of these men, another goal of the project was to find the living descendants
of the “Signers”. Using the names and contact information provided by the researches, the Museum sent out over
1700 emails and postcards to descendants, inviting them to be recognized at the 175th Anniversary Celebration of
Texas’ Independence at Washington-on–the-Brazos on Feb-
ruary 27th. To date, nearly 1200 have responded that they
will attend. RSVPs have been received from across the na-
tion. The Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchison, descendant of
Charles Taylor, spoke after a Roll Call of the Signers Names,
with a response of “here” from each Signer’s descendants.

SAN JACINTO DAY FESTIVAL & BATTLE REENACTMENT ON APRIL 16Booming cannons, cracking musket fire, thundering hooves and battle cries resounded across the San Jacinto
Battleground on Saturday, April 16, as hundreds of history reenactors recreated the events leading up to Texaswinning her independence at the decisive Battle of San Jacinto. This year’s reenactment had even moresignificance, celebrating the 175th Anniversary of Texas Independence.
The daylong celebration at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site included music, entertainment, food, games and fun set amidst living history. The battle re-enactment, which is the most popular event of theday, began at 3 p.m. Re-enactors dramatized the decisive battle where General Sam Houston led his Texiansoldiers to victory over the Mexican Army, eventually leading to almost one million square miles of Mexicanterritory becoming a part of the United States. The re-enactors interpreted the Runaway Scrape (Texians fleeingfrom the advancing forces of Santa Anna), the march of the Texas Army from Gonzales to San Jacinto, thecannon duel, and the final battle between the two forces.

To My Fellow Texans:Because of our mutual passion and commitment to preserving Texas’ rich history, I wanted to share a speech
with your organization on a topic that is very dear to my heart.I recently had the privilege to deliver the keynote address at the Washington-on-the-Brazos’ 175th anniversary
celebration of the Texas Declaration of Independence. It was truly a special occasion that brought together thedescendents of almost all the 59 signers and thousands of proud Texans to commemorate one of the most piv-otal events in Texas’ long legacy of freedom and patriotism.
My great-great-grandfather, Charles S. Taylor, was willing to sign the document that declared Texas free fromMexico, and I am humbled to occupy the Senate seat from Texas that was first held by another signer, ThomasJ. Rusk.
While preparing for the speech and participating in the celebration, I was inspired by the bravery of myancestors and all of our forefathers in their fight for independence. It is so important that every generation ofTexans remember the patriots of the Texas Revolution whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the freedom weenjoy today.
I hope these remarks will be helpful to your organization in your efforts to honor and remember the history ofour great state.God Bless Texas,Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison

CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION
IN AND AROUND TEXAS
RSVPs have been received from across the na-
tion. The Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchison, descendant of
Charles Taylor, spoke after a Roll Call of the Signers Names,
with a response of “here” from each Signer’s descendants.

and SRT President General Sam F.
Clark, KSJ
In a pre-dawn ceremony on March 6, 2011, Alamo Plaza was alive with a somber remembrance of the 175th
anniversary of the historic battle of March 6, 1836. Mexican and Texian soldiers from the San Antonio Living
History Association presented ceremonial musket volleys, while the story of the infamous day in Texas history
was told to a crowd of hundreds of onlookers. Members of the William Barret Travis Chapter #7 and Alamo
Chapter #40 were out in force, as were many other SRT chapters from around the state. The early morning
ceremony ended with a toast to Remember the Alamo!, followed by a breakfast at the Menger Hotel. The breakfast
was sponsored by the San Antonio Living History Association and Alamo Chapter #40.
