President's MessageOn the evening of Thursday, November 12 we will be collecting toys for our annual toy drive.  We will be collecting the toys at St. James.  We will use the north parking lot (smaller one off of Park Ave.) to receive the toys.  The recipients will not be present that evening.  We will need to collect, allocate

and box the toys for each organization. 

In order to facilitate this please email George Rodgers, glrodgers@comcast.net , with the total number of toys you will be donating along with the type of toys, i.e., car, truck, puzzle, crayon holder, etc.  This will help us in the allocation process.  When you send me an email I will let you know what time you can drop off your toys.  I will be assigning drop off times to help with the collection and also to minimize contact between members. 

Anyone who is able to help collect, allocate and box the toys please let me know.  I hope to get 5-10 people to help with this so that we can be efficient and still minimize contact among members.  We are in need of about 2000 toys. So far, from club members I have heard we have about 1000 toys. Thanks for your help and support!

We have a full slate of board members nominated for 2021 other than Program Committee Chair or Co-Chair. The Program Chair selects topics/speakers for our monthly general meeting. Many of you have ideas about what you want presented. Now is the time to participate in that process. Please let me or one of the other board members know if you are interested in helping your club and would be willing to chair the Program Committee. Again, more than one person can do this.

I am looking forward to this month's Zoom meeting presentation on Monday, November 16 at 7pm by professional woodworker Scott Grove. He will be showing us how to inlay minerals to create bugs, butterflies and dragonflies. This can be done on turned or flat work. It is a great technique to enhance your projects and also potentially cover defects in your wood (or if you're like me, defects in your technique!). In December we will return to projects From Our Workshops and club member Wayne Maier will discuss his technique for cutting dovetails.

Secretary’s ReportDPWW Board Meeting – November 2, 2020 George Rodgers opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. Present were Jim Harvey, Bruce Kinney, Whit Anderson,

The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved.

President’s Communication – The club has received a bench top planer donation. Wayne Maier is the custodian of all the of club tools and can be contacted for availability.

Standing Committee Reports Membership (Mike Kalscheur) – Club

membership now stands at 184. About 50% have already paid dues for 2021.

Toys (O.Brian Parks) – George has contacted each of the 2019 recipient organizations and all but one have asked for toys this year. For details about toy collection, see the President's Message on page one.

Newsletter (Jim Harvey) – The deadline for copy to be submitted to both Whit and Jim is Friday, Nov 6.

From Our Workshop (Lee Nye) -- FOW will be done again in December. Six prizes will be offered.

Programs (Peter D’Attomo) – November program will be Scott Grove. The holiday party normally celebrated in December has been canceled due to COVID-19. There will be a December meeting with a presentation and From Our Workshop session on the third Monday, December 21.

Web (Whit Anderson) – We had about 48 people at the October meeting. A dozen people came to our September Sawdust in Your Coffee meeting.

Old Business Member Calling: Mark W. presented the

results of the member calling activity which discovered there was interest in more basic woodworking skills and tips on toy making. There was difficulty in making connections since many people do not pick up if they don’t recognize the calling number. There were some members who don’t have a Zoom capability but enjoy reading the newsletter to keep in touch.

Program Chair: We do not have a candidate for the office of Program Chair.

Election: The election of club office holders will be held by email in conjunction with the December virtual meeting. The club constitution permits the use of proxies which will be used this year. It will be a simple process requiring only a response to an email sent out by Mike K.

New Business Club Outreach: A discussion of how we

can extend the “Learning By Sharing” motto led to a proposal to invite smaller clubs to share in some of our resources. Things like inviting them to Sawdust in Your Coffee and attending Zoom program presentations were considered. George will reach out to Hickory Hills and Grundy County clubs to try this out.

November DPWW MeetingScott GroveInlay Bugs, Butterflies and Dragonflies

Our November 16, 7:00 Zoom meeting will feature Scott Grove demonstrating how to create beautiful beetle, butterfly, and dragonfly inlays to accent turned vessels. He will show a variety of methods that include pigments, metal filings, and exotic minerals like mother of pearl, opal, paua abalone shell, and more. Scott will review the pros and cons of different resins including quick setting UV resins. Surface, translucent, and window inlays be covered, too. This will be an action-packed demonstration with lots of tips and tricks and tools to boot. During the live, interactive demonstration, his wife and co-host, Nancy, helps organize Q&A and provides links in real time, too.

Scott Grove is an international award-winning master craftsman, a woodworker, artist, sculptor, teacher, author, tool designer, and YouTuber who lectures, demonstrates, and judges at national conferences as well as regional and local woodworking groups. He is also a contributing writer for Woodworking Network, Fine Woodworking, Woodshop News, FDM, and American Woodturner. He’s published three books on woodworking with a

fourth about the business of craft on the way. His work can be found in prominent museum, gallery, and private collections, and he maintains an educational site for craftspeople, ImagineGrove.com.

Once there, look for "Resources" in the upper right, and click on "Download Zoom Client" from the "Resources" dropdown menu. If you are going to use a computer, look for "Zoom Client for Meetings." If you are going to use a smart phone or a tablet, look further down for "Zoom Mobile Apps."

Before our first online meeting we had some opportunities to simply get online and try Zoom. For anybody who missed that chance we are going to do that again on Friday, Nov. 13 and on Saturday, Nov. 14.

There is no program at that time, just an opportunity make sure that Zoom works for you. If you have been using Zoom and don't have problems, there is no need to attend.

October Meeting Presentation Jason Clark demonstrated how he makes his Saturn Bowls. A Saturn Bowl, if you missed his presentation, is a bowl with attached rings which turn independently from the bowl and the other rings. The flange is pierced in such a way that the outer part is free from the bowl and can be rotated, but is captured. Jason learned the technique from Hans Weissflog and has refined and extended the method.

As part of the demonstration, Jason turned one of his bowls from a solid block in about 45 minutes, narrating each step. There are, as you can imagine, some special tools and chuck adapters needed and he showed how to make each one. The trick tool for cutting the rotating ring free is a modified super thin parting tool. Jason turns the flange down to 1/8" thickness then uses the thin tool from both sides to create a 45 degree V shaped cut off. The V shape captures the now freed ring as part of the structure.

Jason then showed how to make a couple of ad hoc jam chucks to further refine the overall shape of the turned bowl. The end result is beautiful and somewhat puzzling.

This month there was some follow up about drying walnut bowl blanks.

There was also a post asking if any members had built a kiln for drying bowl blanks. If you have built a kiln or have insight into kilns you want to share, stop by the forum. There was a good response to this post which I'm still pondering. Whit Anderson
