There have been many outstanding academic results – notably Lachlan and his High Distinction in the UNSW mathematics competition as well as a 3 rd place in the North Coast Maths Competition. Also of note in the academic sphere, were the performances of both Levi and Jasmin l who finished first and second respectively in their sections of the Rivers Public Speaking Competition. This competition covered 35 schools in our area and Levi’s speech about “Real Learning” and Jasmin’s exposé on where our food comes from, entertained and educated the audience at Lismore City Hall which included Mayor Jenny Dowell (see photos above). It has also been a fun start to the term for students in Kindergarten, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 6 – all of whom have enjoyed excursions during the past two weeks. Kindergarten was fortunate to be able to join in the many educational activities that were on offer at the show. There is more information about our school’s involvement in the show later in the newsletter. As part of our program to prepare children for staying away from home on longer excursions, Year 3 students enjoyed a night at school last Friday for the Year 3 Big Sleepover with the boys sleeping in a classroom and the girls in the hall. There were many tired but happy faces on Saturday morning – and that was just the teachers! Year 5 students spent three days last week bonding at Camp Koinonia. Their behaviour was exemplary as they were kept busy doing a number of activities that included rock climbing, canoeing, laser tag, surfing and much, much more. With such a terrific group of kids, we know that we are in good hands as they move on to be our senior students next year. Thank you to Mrs A and Mrs McKenna for all their organisation. We have also benefitted from a special visitor over the past two weeks. Healthy Harold and the Life Education Van has been hosting students from Kindergarten to Year 6, sharing very important messages about making healthy choices in a fun and entertaining way. Thanks again to Mrs A for making this possible and congratulations to 3/4B who won the prize as best class from their time in the van! THE SHOW Last Friday, a large number of students from Wyrallah Road Public School attended the Lismore Show. The choir and dancers once again did the school proud with outstanding performances which were broadcast over the local F.M. radio stations. Also present was our Environment Team which has been part of the Waste Wise Ways Challenge which Lismore City Councils runs every two years. The idea is to reduce the amount of waste the school produces and therefore reduce land fill. The competition has several schools from the Lismore area taking part, with the winning school taking home $2000 to help them continue on their path of environmental awareness. The students at Wyrallah Road, under the direction of Mrs Kelly, have been busy over the past three terms implementing and writing a Waste Wise Ways policy for the school. The hard work paid off again this year as Wyrallah Road was awarded first place! Well done to Mrs Kelly and all those who were involved. Congratulations also to the many WRPS students, families and teachers who put entries into the show privately and achieved excellent results. Troy & Kate (pictured) succeeded in gaining a handful of awards each. A number of students in our Photography Club entered the primary school photo competition. All entries were on display in the pavilion and three students came away with special mention. These were: Hayley - 2nd, Josh– Highly Commended and Jada – Highly Commended. All photos will be on display in the school foyer.

SCHOOL FUNDING Over the coming weeks, you may see some information on the news about the way schools are funded. This will have implications for every school – including us. The government is now using data from enrolment forms to guide the process of determining how much funding a school will receive. For this reason, it is vitally important that the information provided by parents in the sections about education and employment on the enrolment form is accurate and not overstated. It is possible that many parents do not remember what they wrote on enrolment forms all those years ago, so we are asking every family to please update your details on the attached form. This is also a good time to update any contact or other information that may have changed. CLASS FEATURE – 1C 1C has come back from holidays fully refreshed and ready to continue their learning. INTENSIVE SWIMMING SCHEME 2013 The Intensive Swimming Scheme for WRPS will take place over a ten day period commencing Monday, 4 November 2013 till Friday, 15 November 2013. This program is for ALL children in Years 2 & 3 and all students in Years 4-5-6 who cannot swim 50m of the pool competently. All children in Years 2 & 3 attend irrespective of whether they can swim 50m or not. The program teaches competent swimmers in Years 2 & 3 water safety skills and water safety techniques that will help all students when near, around or in the water. WRPS prides itself on having all children water-safe by Year 6 and we strongly recommend that your child participate in this program. CAMP KOINONIA PHOTOS ZAC PERKINS – STATE ATHLETICS Last week Zach travelled to Sydney to compete in the State Athletics Championships. The event was held at the Homebush Stadium. Zach was representing the North Coast in the 800m track event. Although Zac was unable to progress beyond the first heat, he thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to compete at the Olympic venue. BAND NEWS PROFILE NO. 7 Cody “Keys” is the Wyrallah Road Band main keyboard player. He took on the job following Isabel ‘s departure to high school last year. Cody already had a keyboard at home before starting lessons at school. He used to mess about on the keyboard until one day he asked if he could start lessons. He said he wanted to become a better player. Soon enough, Cody was performing with the school band. Being a “die hard” musician, Cody particularly enjoyed the Sound and Film Archives visited when Year 6 were on excursion in Canberra recently. Cody’s favourite listening styles are pop and rock. Not surprisingly, the upbeat “All Stars” is a personal favourite band piece.

NEXT MEETING: The next meeting date is Wednesday, 13 November. Please note some time changes. The

fundraising meeting will start at 6.30pm instead of 6pm and the general meeting will start at 7pm. Please

feel free to attend both meetings or just one.

SCHOOL BANKING: Redeem your tokens for a moneybox this year!

In 2014 the School Banking program will be launching a new set of exciting reward items for students to

redeem their tokens for. Each reward item will continue to be valued at 10 tokens (i.e. 10 deposits) and

there will be two new reward items for students to choose from each term.

With exciting new reward items on offer in 2014, please be aware that the Dollarmites moneyboxes will no

longer be available next year. To avoid any child missing out on claiming their moneybox, please let your

children know of this change and encourage them to redeem their

moneybox this school year. In an effort to ensure your child doesn’t

miss out, the rule of one money box per year has been removed. If

your child is trying to collect the series of Dollarmite moneyboxes, they

are encouraged to do so before the end of the school year. Please

understand that the still need to redeem each moneybox for the

required 10 tokens.

FUNDRAISING: There are still spots to fill in the Bunnings BBQ roster for Sunday, 3rd November, so please get

in touch with Sharon and let her know what time you can help out. If you can’t

be there on the day, perhaps you can donate something to be used on the

day. Donations of sauces, serviettes etc. really make a difference to how

much money we can give back to the school and ultimately your children. So

next time you’re in the supermarket, please grab an extra sauce or a pack of

99c serviettes and send them in to the office.
