FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT 29 NOV. 2020

The Apostle Andrew Biography, Life and Death

What do we know about the Apos-tle Andrew? What is it about this man’s life and death that is important for us to know about? The name “Andrew” means “manly, manhood” or “valor” and since God often ascribes meaning to names, this man must have been a manly man. That is, he was likely a strong man both in will and physical stature. Andrew, like his brother Peter, was a fisherman by trade, meaning that he was an outdoorsman and must have been very physically fit. He was exposed to the conditions and had learned a trade that was also physically demanding. We read of An-drew and Peter’s calling in Matthew 4:18-22 “While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” Both Andrew and Peter left everything behind to follow Jesus to become “fishers of men.” This is astounding if you think about it because they left their lifelong job secu-rity, the only thing they had ever known, everything that was familiar to them, and obviously they had to leave their fami-ly behind too, all walking away at Jesus’ invitation. The words “Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him” reveal to us the true nature of this “all” that they left to follow Him. They forsook both their living and their father and family. What their father must have felt about this is not stated but one wonders if Andrew and Pete-ter’s father tried to talk them both out of it and when he couldn’t, must have been dumbfounded. Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist before he was a disciple of Jesus. We read of an encounter between Andrew, John and Jesus in John 1:40-42 “Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.” What I like about Andrew’s nature was that he was always bringing people to Christ. Perhaps he had been doing the same thing for John the Baptist. It wouldn’t be surprising if he did given the fact that he was bringing others to Jesus. Maybe that’s because Andrew immediately recog-nized Jesus as the fulfillment of the long-prophesied Messiah (John 1:41). Andrew and Philipp once even brought some Greeks to meet Jesus (John 12:22) so the thing that impress-es me most about Andrew is that he forsook everything and everyone to follow Jesus and then was determined to bring others to Christ. How much am I like that or how far do I fall short of that willingness to forsake all and bring others to Christ? From what we know from church history and tradi-tion, Andrew kept bringing people to Christ, even after Je-sus’ death. He never seemed to care about putting his own life at risk. He was martyred by crucifixion in the city of Patras which was on the northern coast of Peloponnese in Greece. Given the fact that he was crucified there, he must have, like many of the other apostles, went well beyond Ju-dea to bring the gospel into all the world as Christ had com-manded (Matt 28:19-20). Church historian Eusebuis wrote that he may have brought the gospel to as far away as Kiev which is now part of Ukraine. It’s interesting that he was crucified like Christ but in the pattern or shape of an “X”

which was often a Christian symbol and is now known as St. An-drew’s cross because it was said that Andrew, like his brother Peter, considered himself unworthy of being crucified in the same manner as Christ was. He was crucified close to 70 AD. If Andrew’s life is an example to us, let it be that like he did, we need to be bringing people to Christ and to go into all the world, even if it’s our next door neighbor. He forsook everything to follow Christ, including his family, his job security, and even his nation at the latter part of his life. How often have we told others, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ)” (John 1:42)? Speaking for myself, I can say, surely not enough times.

    Dumpster Duty!!!

On the 21st of November a group of

    robust individuals gathered to emp-

ty out the garage so that work could

begin on the roof. Many thanks are

    due to Kingsly and Constantine

    Ezeama, Daniel Galipeau, William

Cabral and his grandfather, David Neary, Robert Ricciardi,

Richard Davis and his sons Matthew and Christopher even

our youngest member of the military Fabio Monteiro was

there for a while. I was also on hand for the first two hours

lending my weight to break up some of the longer pieces.

One and a half 15 ft. dumpsters were filled by our engineers

of destruction! A good time, ending with pizza, was had by

    all.

    The Roof

The premade trusses for the roof of the

garage arrived on Friday the 20th. The

director of the Construction company was

here to receive them. The first two bays

of the garage were emptied out on Satur-

day and the third was emptied on Monday by Paul Garriepy

and Stephen Garrepy. On the VERY rainy Monday two

men from the Construction Company arrived to check the

site and shore up the severely damaged roof so that it could

be worked on Tuesday. As I write these words the old roof

has been removed and the trim is also being removed. The

wood was found to be extremely rotted. The debris from

this work filled the rest of the second dumpster and the unit

that Coutnoir Construction Co. had brought with them.

With the onset of the Corona Virus and the increase of at-

home DIY the prices have increase to the point where 2 X

4’s have gone from about $2.50 in March to $5.60 in Novem-

ber. This has necessitated a price increase. The cost of the

work on the roof now stands at $18,200.00 for all work and

materials. We are also looking at the trim which should be

done and the electrical system to make the doors and the elec-

trical sockets fully functional. Any donations towards this

project should indicate in writing either in a note or in the

memo line of the check. If all goes well it will also serve as a

temporary place for coffee hours until the Parish Center is

    built.

    in pdf format, and more!

Great Thanks To the Champlin Foundation!

Please say a prayer for the good work that the Champlin Foundation continues to do through out our State. Last week we received news that our Parish is to receive a grant for $24,500.00 for the project of re-pointing both the roof and the tower of the Church. Also included was the re-building of top part of the Chimney that was bulging out and in danger of loosing its bricks. This is the second grant we have received from the Foundation. The first was dedi-cated to the resetting of the front steps of the Church, the repair of the Church railings and the painting of the five sets of Church doors.

KIDNAPPED ABUJA PRIEST: Fr. Matthew Dajo is a Priest of Abuja Archdiocese in Nigeria. He is the pas-tor of St Anthony Parish Yangoji, Abuja. On Sunday the 22nd of No-vember, 2020 the Feast of Christ the King, heavily Armed men suspected to be 'Hause Fulani' broke into the fa-ther's residence of St Anthony's Parish and Kidnapped Fr. Matthew. Spent bullets were found in and out Father's room. Blood believed to be Fr's was spotted in his room. We pray for Fr's safe release from his kidnappers. Please keep him and his family in prayer.

  • Thanksgiving with the Parish Youth Groups Some of our young people gathered on Saturday to divide up the foodstuffs that had been received for the Thanksgiving Baskets. There was plenty of material to work with from the generosity of our parishioners. The retired Police and Firefighters donated $300.00 in giftcards for the baskets. Another person donated $40.00 in gift cards, a

third donated a twenty dollar gift card and a forth $20.00 in cash. Our St. Vincent de Paul gave up their Thanksgiving collection to help our Youth Group make a beautiful effort to help others. Thankfully 12 baskets were distributed to parishioners and 15 baskets were taken to Crossroads for distribution. This was truly a wonderful celebration of this feast. May God bless our Youth and their adult guides, our retired Police and firefighters, our St. Vincent DePaul and all those who do-nated to this effort.

    Amen!

    Catechism News!!!

A year ago, when your children received confirmation, we had no way of knowing that our traditional Corpus Christi procession would have to be canceled due to the pandemic. Traditionally, at the end of the Corpus Christi procession, Father presents each of the Confirmandi with a Confirmation certificate and a Bible. We hope that we will be able to resume our normal celebrations this spring and would invite all of the young people confirmed in November 2019 to participate. In the interim, Father would like the young people to receive their certificates and Bibles. On Sunday, December 13th, following the 9AM, the 11AM and the 12:30PM masses, Father will make presentations to last year’s Confirmandi and this years First Communicants. Please mark this date on your calendar and we look forward to seeing you at Holy Name on December 13th. If you are unable to attend mass on this day, please contact the rectory to discuss alternative arrangements for obtaining your child’s materials. God Bless,

Tabitha Aldrich, Dir. of Religious Education

ISIS Now Attacking Mozambique More than 2,000 people have been killed and over 500,000 made refugees in there own coun-try by an Islamic State group attacking Cabo Delgado in Mozambique. One of the mission-aries in the area has testified that there are de-composing bodies along the roadsides and paths. Many buildings have been burnt to the ground and the second oldest Catholic Mission has seen its Church almost completely de-stroyed.

Racist From the Beginning From Judie Brown, President of the American Life League.an explosive new report on Planned Parenthood's extensive present day racism, comprising 19 Planned Parenthood affiliate organizations operating in 33 states across the country. With all of these document-ed admissions of racism by Planned Parenthood itself, it is no longer just pro-lifers accusing Planned Parenthood of racism. It is Planned Parenthood, itself, admitting it is rac-ist. With that admission, it is clear that any individual, corporation, or organization that

supports Planned Parenthood is also racist.
