PBA League Relocates To D.C. Metro Without Fans

by Lucas WisemanIn a move announced

Thursday, the PBA League will change locations and be held without fans next month.

Previously scheduled to take place at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, the event will now take place Sept. 26-30 at a Bowlero center in Centreville, Vir-ginia, just outside Washing-ton, D.C.

The new host location in Centreville will allow the PBA League players to compete in a safe environ-ment - limited to athletes, managers, and essential staff only, with no fans on site, the PBA wrote in a news release.

The PBA League has thrived in recent years in Portland thanks in part to the rambunctious fans at Bayside Bowl. The PBA announced the event will return there in 2021.

“This was an extremely tough decision given the in-extricable link between the PBA League and Bayside Bowl, and the strong desire for things to feel normal,” Bayside Bowl proprietor Charlie Mitchell said in the release. “We tried to come up with a safe way to host the event, but given safety concerns, social distancing guidelines and occupancy

One other question sur-rounding the PBA League has been whether or not in-ternational players will be able to travel to compete.

At least one of those questions was answered Thursday night when PBA superstar Jason Belmonte tweeted he had received

clearance to travel to com-pete in upcoming events.

The race to capture the Elias Cup will begin with a seeding round on Sept. 26 starting at 10 a.m. broad-cast live exclusively on FloBowling, followed by 12 hours of live competi-tion on FS1.

Ever since the USBC announced its new division changes for the Open Champion-ships, the questions about sandbagging have been asked time-and-time again. Well, the USBC has answered them — emphatically.

If you missed their post, this is what they shared on Facebook:

“Attention bowlers:

Tournament management at the USBC Open Championships has charged a participant with violation of USBC Rules

17a-3 Unfair Tactics and 17b-1 Improper Conduct and with violation of 2019 USBC Open Championships rule 9b – Unsportsmanlike Behavior for the bowler’s action during Monday’s competition at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.

USBC tournament management was informed of the bowler’s improper actions on Tuesday. After a review, it was determined the bowler’s scores in singles competition were not in line with the bowler’s average or his earlier performances in the competition and determined the bowler knowingly was attempting to lower his tournament average to gain an unfair advantage for future classified competitions.

The bowler has been notified of the violations, and that his singles scores will be removed from his Open Championships record and average calculation. #USBCOpen tournament management also has forwarded the matter to the USBC Rules Department requesting suspension of the bowler’s USBC membership.

The bowler has the right to appeal the decision and any suspension.

Sandbagging to lower one’s average is unacceptable at every level, and USBC ap-preciates the efforts of the bowlers and tournament officials who make sure their bowlers follow proper rules and etiquette at all times.”

Basically, what happened was a bowler — a bowler that USBC has yet to name — bowled so poorly that they investigated his scores and the situation and deemed that his results in singles was far, far below his tournament average and his previous event’s scores (team and doubles).

They decided that what the bowler did was, in fact, sandbagging and disqualified his singles score and decided that it would not go against his tournament average.

The bowler in question is a classified competitor. So lowering or “managing his aver-age” to ensure that it doesn’t get too high is to their benefit if their goal is to stay in a lower

and USBC isn’t taking it lightly either

division to capitalize on brackets and lesser competition.

The tournament committee determined that the bowler committed foul play and has requested that the bowler’s membership be suspended. While this may seem harsh to some, it is — in my opinion — mandatory. Sandbagging is cheating. Straight forward. And when it can be proven, it should be punished severely.

We have to maintain the integrity of the tournament and the sport in any and all ways. And if we, as a sport, want to be taken seriously, we must take these accusations seri-ously. The bowler obviously has the right to appeal, but if the USBC and OC tournament staff have come to this decision, it would seem that they have done their due dili-gence and are certain of their ruling.

PBA League continued from page 1

It was way back in 1982 when AMF sent me on my first international excursion to Great Britain, France and Spain. My trip was to include visits to most of the sixteen AMF bowling centers in England, Scotland and Wales, and also to two locations in France and two sites in Spain.

The majority of my two month visit was concentrated in England, where AMF Hum-ber was undergoing a rejuvenation of their bowling facilities, and my visit was to provide marketing assistance to the managers in developing new customers.

At this same time, AMF was conducting the very first PBA event in Europe, at the famous AMF Bowling de Paris, on the Jardin D’Acclimatation (now the site of the Foun-dation Louis Vuitton Building), a park-like setting near the center of Paris.

There’s not much that I can remember about Bowling de Paris, except that it was more of a restaurant with bowling lanes on the second floor. It’s interesting to note that AMF had a similar bowling center (Forest Park Lanes) in Fort Worth, Texas, with a world famous pancake house on the main floor, and 40 lanes overhead. The smell of pancakes permeated the lanes!

This leads me to wonder if the current ownership of AMF might have noticed the con-sistent revenue from restaurants (or the smell of pancakes) and decided to place more of an emphasis on their food operation in the current Bowlmor concept.

AMF Bowling de Paris was the perfect location for the promotion of ten pin bowling. In a field dominated by AMF staffers, the eventual winner was Tom Baker of Buffalo, New York, a member of the AMF Staff of Champions, defeating Mike Aulby of India-napolis, Indiana, in the title match, 225-191.

The televised stepladder finals, shown on the French Television Network, were as follows: Steve Martin, Kingsport, TN, defeated Joe Hutchinson, Scranton, PA, 214-171; Wayne Webb, Indianapolis, defeated Martin 257-234; Baker defeated Webb 269-248; leading to the championship match against Aulby.

Other AMF notables among the top 24 included Nelson Burton Jr., St. Louis, MO (6th); Dick Weber, St. Louis, MO (7th); Joe Berardi, Brooklyn, NY (8th); Jay Robinson, Van Nuys, CA (9th); and Mats Karlsson of Sweden (15th).

From AMF Bowling de Paris, it was on to AMF Bowl de Nice Acropolis, a new facil-ity that had just been constructed. My trip was suddenly cut short on the news that there was a political uprising in Spain, and I was told to get back to the United States as quickly as possible.

Now almost 40 years have passed, and I still have “Never been to Spain, but I kinda like the music…”

World Bowling has established an Event Portfolio Working Group charged with looking for new dates to re-schedule events once the pandemic subsides.

The inaugural Para Bowling World Cup will also be postponed and is planned to take place in Kuwait in May 2021 to avoid the congestion of the events being resched-uled in the latter part of the year. Final dates for both events will be provided at a future time.

Bowlero Corp. and Skillz, a leading mobile games plat-form, are launching “Strike! By Bowlero,” a first-of-its-kind mobile esports game connecting the 30 million reg-istered Skillz players with Bowlero’s 300 bowling centers nationwide.

“Strike! By Bowlero” will be available in early Sep-tember for iOS and Android users in the App Store and Google Play Store.

Touch Mechanics, a United Kingdom-based studio that has been creating Skillz-powered games since 2014, completely optimized the new game to merge the physical and digital worlds of Bowlero beyond the in-center experi-ence, while bringing sponsored esports tournaments into Bowlero bowling centers.

Existing Skillz players will experience enhancements to the mobile game, one of which includes new blacklight bowling gameplay to mirror what is offered in Bowlero centers.

“We really wanted the mobile experience to reflect the outstanding design guests come to expect when visiting a Bowlero center,” said Natalie McMahon, Creative Direc-tor at Bowlero Corp. “We’ve captured that unique energy and the social competition inherent to bowling, and we made it accessible from your personal device. It’s excit-ing!”

Bowlero’s 28 million annual customers will be intro-duced to the mobile experience, and can compete for cash prizes and bonuses in weekly tournaments and challenges, in addition to earning exclusive rewards redeemable at Bowlero centers.

“Providing a digital experience to connect with guests off the lanes is more important than ever,” said Lev Ekster, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Bowle-ro Corp and COO of the Professional Bowlers Associa-tion. “With ‘Strike! By Bowlero,’ we’re able to offer more value to our guests when they’re not physically at our cen-ters, while new players are introduced to Bowlero in a fun and exciting way.”

Added Andrew Paradise, CEO and founder of Skillz: “Bowlero and Skillz are teaming up to create the future of bowling through a new mobile interactive game that ties the fun of a physical Bowlero experience into bite-sized entertainment that can be enjoyed at home or on the go. As the offline and online worlds are converging, new ex-periences like ‘Strike! By Bowlero’ merge these worlds to create the future of bowling off of the lane.”

Bowlero Enters Esports Realm in Alliance With Skillz

LAUGHLIN, NV. - It was hot as hell on the Colorado River as record temperatures descended on the area last week along with bowlers from Arizona, CALIFORNIA and Nevada. Temperatures rose to 125 degrees one af-ternoon. Of course, that number paled compared to the 130 degrees recorded up north at Death Valley. I love hot weather, but I love the gasoline prices in Bullhead City, AZ even better. I drove over the bridge from Nevada to Arizona to fill up my gas tank at $1.71 per gallon!!!

CALIFORNIA bowlers did it again. They “dominat-ed, taking home several titles. Tournament veteran and record-holder Andy Toro, rookies Mary Andruczyk and Terry Lankster all bowled well. Our California rookies each won titles and Andy cashed multiple times. Senior No-Tap tournaments are always competitive and exciting because scores are close and high.

CALFORNIAN Andy Toro holds the Men’s Division 1 record score of 896, rolled a few tournaments ago. Andy usually rolls several No-Tap 300s every tournament, but the extreme hot weather had an effect on the lane oil. The result was rapid oil evaporation and extremely dry lanes. Andy and many others were running to the pro shop to have their bowling balls polished. The lane conditions re-duced scores and the number of 300 games.

When I speak of reduced scores, I mean it. I saw sev-eral men with No-Tap games below 125 and three game series below 500! I saw many games below 200. There were many more 500s and 600s and less 700s and 800 series than usual. It was the lowest scoring Laughlin Blast Tournament I have witnessed. It’s amazing how much ef-fect record high temperatures have on scoring.

CALIFORNIA Bowlers Rock at the “LAUGHLIN BLAST” Tourney

“Laughlin Blast” Rookie Terry Lankster

CALIFORNIAN and Laughlin Blast rookie Terry Lankster did roll one of the few 300 games last week. He did so on his way to a Division 1 Title on Tuesday and a Division 1 tournament high score of 894.

CALIFORNIANS: KEEP DOMINATING. Keep showing the world that California bowlers are the best bowlers on the planet.

Operation Freedom Paws nonprofit organization was founded by “California Bowler and Veteran” Mary Cortani in 2010 that has provided service dogs and training support to veterans and others who suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, complex PTSD, traumatic brain injury and other physical, neurological, psychological and mobility needs. According to experts, service dogs help empower people with disabilities to live quality lives. Operation Freedom Paws carefully matches cli-ents with their specially chosen four-legged com-panions, most of which come from rescue shel-ters.
