TYPES OF MISSIONS METHOD OF TARGET

LOCATION

ATP 3-09.30

TYPES OF MISSIONS

• Adjust Fire- Provides ONE round from the firing

unit to adjust until effects are within 50 meters.

After round is adjusted to within 50 meters,

observer will announce “Fire for Effect.” You will

use AF when you do not have an accurate Target

Location.

ATP 3-09.30

TYPES OF MISSIONS (cont’d)

• Fire for Effect- No adjusting of the rounds is

required. All guns (example: Battery=8 guns)

will fire on the target after the call for fire is

sent. You will use FFE when you have an

accurate Target Location.

ATP 3-09.30

TYPES OF MISSIONS (cont’d)

• Immediate Suppression/Smoke- Call for fire is made in one transmission. This facilitates suppression (example: Unit is receiving enemy fire and needs to suppress the enemy to get in a better position.) The number of rounds you receive will depend on Unit SOP.

AMMUNITION

• Ammunition is normally selected by the firing unit.

It is selected according to the target description the

observer gives (SNAP). However, the observer may

REQUEST a different type of ammunition “In Effect”

in the Method of Engagement. In effect means in

your FFE you will receive this requested ammunition.

TRAJECTORY

• Low Angle- The standard for Artillery

because Low Angle fires are less susceptible to enemy radar.

• High Angle- The observer may request High Angle. Example: Terrain, MOUT. Mortars can only fire High Angle.

wHEN READY: Less control, Faster response

** STANDARD METHOD OF ENGAGEMENT **

(does not get announced)

AT MY COMMAND: Able to mass fires, better effects, and used for

moving targets.

TIME ON TARGET: Standard is +/- 3 seconds the rounds will impact

-The observer makes corrections to move the round tothe target.

-Corrections are sent to the FDC

LEFT/RIGHT- To the nearest 10 meters(OT x Spotting = Deviation Correction)

ADD/DROP- Range corrections (100m)(Successive Bracketing)

NOTE: Left/Right corrections less than 30 meters are not sent.

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES

The Observer Target (OT) Factor is used todetermine the LEFT/RIGHT deviation correction.

To Determine the OT Factor you must:-Divide the distance from the observer to the

target by 1000.-Round to the nearest whole number.-If it ends in a .5 round to the nearest EVEN whole

number.-If the distance is less than 1000 express OT factor

as a decimal.(IE. 700m = .7)

The spotting is the number of mils measuredbetween the target and the impacting round.

The measurement is made using the reticle patterninside a pair of military binoculars or the “HandMethod”.

The reticle tick marks in the military binoculars arein increments of 10 mils.

Successive bracketing is best when observers are inexperienced.

The first range correction is based on the FO's best judgment as to the correct range change.

The goal is to establish a bracket, that is, one round OVERand one round SHORT of the target.

As the bracket is established, the FO successively splits his bracket in half. Once the FO reaches the add/drop 50m then he will Fire for Effect.
