At the SantaFontis Cancer Hospital, we like to offer what is oftenunavailable to most cancer patients: an individualized and com-prehensive cancer therapy. We combine state-of-the-art treat-ment with a caring and patient-orientated approach and involveour patients in all our therapeutic decisions – as far as they wishto be involved. An international team of physicians and nursesnot only provides care and advice in several languages, but alsoconsiders the cultural and religious needs of our patients fromabroad.

Our quality standards compare with the ones applied by otherinternational cancer centres. Although our principle is to treatour cancer patients according to current standards, we are alsoopen to innovative and complementary therapeutic approaches. At our Clinical Study Centre, new and promising drugs arebeing investigated in order to make them available to cancerpatients as soon as possible.

Suffering from cancer is a very frightening experience. Everyoneworking at our hospital – whether they are physicians, nursingstaff or administrative personnel – is aware of this and preparedto support the patients, throughout the various phases of theirdisease with compassion and dedication.

Yours sincerely,

Joachim Drevs MD, PhD

Welcome!

The private SanaFontis Hospital in Freiburg, Breisgau(Germany) was opened in April 2006. Specialising in acute can-cer care, the hospital has beds for 85 patients suffering from solidtumours, lymphoma and certain types of leukaemia. We providea holistic approach to cancer therapy that is tailored to the indi-vidual needs of a patient. Our clinic is situated in the middle ofthe romantic "Mooswald" nature reserve, an area that is ideallysuited to people who need to rest recover and regain their emo-tional balance.

Being an international competencecentre, the SanaFontis Hospital is inclose contact with other cancer centresworldwide and is part of the infra-structure of the Medical University ofFreiburg and the surrounding clinics.

Freiburg is famous for its medievalarchitecture, its mild climate and itsfascinating location between the vastRhine valley and the mountains of theBlack Forest, its proximity to Switzer-land and the French Alsace region.Nature at its best and a centuries-oldculture go hand in hand with thecharm and liveliness of a modern university town.

The SanaFontis Cancer Hospital –International competence at the highest medical level

The SanaFontis hospital offers anambiance that resembles a hotel morethan a hospital. A well-appointedlobby, comfortable rest areas, luxu-riant plants, fresh flowers in everyroom and the ever-friendly staff create an atmosphere in which ourpatients feel at ease.

The cosy inner courtyard with itslittle herb garden laid out withloving care and the small pond invitethe visitor to relax and rest. It is herethat small concerts and events takeplace.

Besides the room reserved forChristian prayer service, our clinicalso has a room suited to Muslimprayer and makes rooms available topeople of other religions.

Regaining energy –in a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere

Tracking down tumours – with modern technologies and high precision equipment

Whether we use state-of-the-art laboratory medicine, such as thedetermination of biomarkers, or the latest diagnostic imagingprocedures – at our hospital, we put our trust in forward-lookingdiagnostic technologies.

The hospital’s department of Diagnostic Imaging has a PET-CTscanner, which is a device combining positron emission tomo-graphy (PET) with computer tomography (CT). This combina-tion of two imaging procedures in one scanner allows locatingeven small cancer sites with utmost precision, planning the optimal treatment and monitoring the course of the disease.

For outpatients who are being treated but have questions aboutthe treatment strategy we offer a special service. They can obtaina second opinion from one of our experienced oncologists whowill issue a comprehensive written expert opinion.

At the SanaFontis Hospital, meticulous preliminary tests are performed in order to work out an individual therapy plan together with the patient and his relatives. We consider carefullywhether the expected benefits of a therapy outweigh the poten-tial harm that may be caused by the side effects of the drugs.

A highly motivated nursing team is committed to providing the patients with competent and compassionate medical care. 24 hours a day, qualified nurses strive to not only look after theirpatients, but to also help them to regain their independence and“joie de vivre”.

Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are said to be the “threepillars“ of cancer treatment. Cancer surgery, radiation therapyand drug therapy have been fundamentally improved and addedto over the last ten years. The much-feared side effects of previous cancer therapies can be avoided or reduced today byusing modern drugs and effective concomitant therapies.

Treating the disease – with individual concepts and loving care

Preserving life – with new medication and clinical studies

At our Clinical Study Centre, newdrugs are investigated and developedfurther. Outpatients as well as inpa-tients can take part in clinical trials,as long as this is considered to be ofbenefit to them and there are noother therapeutic options left.

Our highest priority consists inmaking new and promising therapiesavailable to our patients as quickly aspossible.

Frequently, standard therapies become ineffective when thetumour is at an advanced stage. In order to still get the cancerunder control and to prevent the formation of metastases, thephysicians of the SanaFontis Hospital are pursuing innovativetreatment strategies.

Thanks to new target-orientated medicines that cut off the bloodsupply to the tumour, tumours are literally starved to death.Administering antibodies or cytokines can increase the body’sendogenous defences.

In order to keep the physical and mental side effects of stressfultherapies to a minimum the SanaFontis Hospital offers a rangeof complementary therapies.

Our micronutrients programme supports the immune systemand increases the resistance of the body to radiotherapies or chemotherapies. Many cancer patients suffer from a deficiency inimportant vitamins and trace elements. Therefore, after thoroughexaminations, we put together a formula of micronutrients foreach patient that is specifically tailored to the personal require-ments.

The mistletoe therapy can ease the side effects of aggressive the-rapies. Our experienced medical staff knows which preparationsare effective and on which tumours they are to be used.

The physical therapy controls the physical symptoms of thedisease as well as its treatment. Its primary aim is to maintain andimprove the patient’s mobility, independence and physiologicalstability.

Psycho-oncology helps overcome the mental crisis triggered bythe disease as both, body and soul, need professional help duringcancer therapy.

Strengthening the body defences –through complementary therapies for body and mind

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) helps to soften the sideeffects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, improves thepatient’s physical well-being and strengthens the immune systemin its fight against cancer.

At the SanaFontis Hospital, several medical consultants withspecial training in TCM provide an individualised therapyusing methods from Traditional Chinese Medicine to comple-ment standard cancer therapy. These include acupuncture,Chinese phytotherapy, which is predominantly based on theuse of medicinal herbs, Chinese dietetics, the massaging ofmeridian and reflex points in order to remove dysfunctions, breathing and motion techniques for relaxation such as TaiChi.

Our holistic approach to pain therapy combines standard therapywith complementary methods in order to best control any painsymptoms.

Controlling pain –with Eastern wisdom and Western know-how

Self-expression –through imagination, creativity and joy

The creative energy boosted throughartistic activities gives the patientsrenewed courage to cope with theirdisease. They are often better able toexpress their emotions and expe-riences through the paintings and/or sculptures they create than withwords. This is not about producingperfect or beautiful works of art.

Our experienced art therapist andthe committed staff members of the Art & Culture Group of theSanaFontis Patient Charity provideworkshops where the patients canengage in free painting, painting onsilk, soapstone work, basket weavingor flower arranging. They organizeoutings, readings, lectures and con-certs. The various activities add ima-gination and entertainment to thedaily routine at the hospital. Theyencourage the social interaction between patients and they help create a joyful and optimistic atmo-sphere.

We want our patients and guests tofeel comfortable. They should havethe feeling that they are staying at anice hotel rather than at a hospital. Therefore, our patients are offeredbright and friendly rooms that areelegantly furnished. They are provi-ded with modern bathrooms, tele-phones with a direct dialling facilityas well as flat screen television sets. Many of them also have access to theInternet and E-Mail by WLAN.

To patients with high expectationswe offer spacious suites that are sub-divided into separate sleeping andliving areas and have lovely balconies.

Relatives who wish to keep ourpatients company during their hos-pital stay are provided with singlerooms at the hospital or we can arran-ge accommodation at special rates innearby hotels.
