The evening begins at 6:00 pm; dinner will be served at6:45 pm followed by an inspirational and entertaining presen-tation by New York Times reporter and editor Dana Jennings.Dana was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate can-cer in April 2008 at the age of 50. He has been blogging abouthis experience:

There will also be an afternoon opportunity for physiciansand men with prostate cancer to hear Dr. Gerald Chodak,respected and world-renown urologist and prostate diseasespecialist. Dr. Chodak has lectured in 14 countries and pub-lished more than 150 original articles. He was instrumental informing US TOO, an international support group for men withprostate cancer and their significant others.

Not only is this event, now in its fifth year, a fundraiser;it is also a hope-raiser, bringing together cancer survivors andfamily members who understand how important the pro-grams of Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana are.

Volunteers needed for “Tie 1 on 4 Prostate Cancer”Cancer Services needs volunteers to assemble,install and then remove oversized blue necktieswhich will be placed at a key location in each ofthe 11 counties the organization serves. The com-mittee has secured permission for highly visiblelocations (courthouses and hospitals) in Allen,Adams, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, Noble,Steuben, Wells and Whitley counties. Volunteershope to add Lagrange and Wabash to the list.

Volunteers are also needed to create mini-neck-ties which will be sold to wear on lapels duringSeptember’s Prostate Cancer Awareness month.Pre-cut ribbon and instructions are available inpackages of 50. “As someone who lives with the diagnosisof Stage IV breast/bone cancer, and as anindividual with a desire to take charge andlive my life the best I can, I've researched avariety of ways to make things better. Usingprayer, exercise, nutrition, vitamins, minerals,a hormone cream and herbs, I thought I hadpretty much achieved the best results possible.Even my oncologist said that to look at me noone would believe I had cancer, much lessStage IV.

One day, while sharing with others atwork, a co-worker asked if I had ever heard ofReiki. I told him that I had but that I didn'tknow what it entailed exactly. I also didn'tthink something like that would be available inFort Wayne. He set me straight on both countsand got me in contact with a Reiki Master. Imade an appointment, went with my husbandfor a session, not having a clue as to whatwould happen, and it has changed my life.

From the first appointment, Reiki hashelped me to find my balance both physicallyand emotionally. Because I had some prettyserious surgery, I was left feeling like I didn'tknow my body anymore. There were subtleand not-so-subtle changes that left me feelingoff-center. And then there was the pain thatmedication didn't do much for except leavingme feeling like a zombie. Reiki helped withall of it.

I feel stronger emotionally, physically andeven spiritually. My husband learned how todo First Level Reiki and he treats me betweenmajor sessions. By doing this, it has allowedhim to feel like he's contributing more to the"cause" then being just a researcher and cheer-leader. I won't say that I feel like my old self,again; but when I consider where I camefrom, and how much Reiki helped me to gethere, I smile. It's so nice to be able to stretchmy whole body again."

Introduction to ReikiThe word Reiki (pronounced RAY-kee) is made up of two Japanese

words. Rei, which means "God's wisdom” or “higher power“; and, Ki,which stands for "life force energy.“ Reiki is an ancient healing art. Itdoes no harm, it goes where it is needed, and it promotes wellness andfacilitates healing.

Reiki is not a drug or hypnosis; itwill not make you lose control orgive someone else control over you.It is not to be used as a replacementfor conventional care or for post-ponement to see a doctor about amedical problem.

People use Reiki as a comple-mentary therapy to reduce stress and

improve mental, physical and emotional balance. Many people reportfeeling more relaxed and energized, and they experience greater mentalclarity as a result of receiving Reiki.

During a Reiki session, the recipient will be fully clothed either sit-ting in a chair or lying on a table. He or she may remove shoes for com-fort. The Reiki practitioner will use either a light touch on body or holdtheir hands slightly above the recipient’s body. Reiki is not a massage.

The recipient may feel a sense of heat or warmth and generally berelaxed or calm. Sometimes people report a tingling sense or feelingenergized. Sometimes people feel nothing at all. The Reiki practitionermay play soft music and use dim lighting. He or she may become quietin order to focus before the session begins.

Because Reiki involves no pressure or manipulation, no substance toingest and nothing that interacts with medications, there are no knownmedical contraindications to its use. In fact, the practice of Reiki supportsstandard medical intervention, including surgery, medications, radiationor chemotherapy and physical therapy. A number of major hospitals,including Cleveland Clinic Center for Integrative Medicine; ColumbiaUniversity Medical Center, NY; Duke Integrative Medicine, NC; andMemorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, NY, are utilizing this therapy tocomplement the medical care they provide.
