Hall, State Director, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education!Please join the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education staff as we extend congratulations to Lolita Hall who retired from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), effective January 1, 2018. Lolita B. Hall epitomizes professionalism, innovative thinking, and high expectation for quality in all educational endeavors as evidenced by her extensive experience and success in the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education. During an illustrative 27-year career at the VDOE she was the driving force behind innovative educational initiatives ranging from Virginia’s System of Core Standards and Measures through Workplace Readiness Skills for the Commonwealth, industry credentialing, and Pathways in Cybersecurity. We will miss you, Lolita, and wish you only the very best in retirement as you take on new experiences and new adventurers. It is with heartfelt gratitude that we say…farewell, best wishes, and thank you, Lolita, for your service to Virginia’s students, teachers, administrators, and programs.

2018 Virginia ACTE Outstanding CTE Teacher of the Year
Diane Breinig, a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Briar Woods High School, Loudoun County Public Schools, was named the Virginia ACTE Outstanding CTE Teacher of the Year. Breinig is the lead teacher for the Early Childhood Education and Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow program. Congratulations!
2017 Association for CTE Health and Medical Science Outstanding Service Award
Jane Best, a Practical Nursing instructor at the Chesapeake Career Center in the Chesapeake Public Schools division has been awarded the CTE Health and Medical Science Outstanding Service Award. During her 17 years in education, Jane has proven to be an effective teacher and an outstanding nurse. Her exceptional knowledge of nursing pedagogy and incorporating instructional strategies in the classroom that reflect best practices have yield an impressive student state exam pass rate.
National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE)
Teresa Lindberg, Agricultural Teacher, Edward W. Wyatt Middle School, Greensville County Public Schools, received the NAAE Outstanding Agricultural Education Teacher Award. This program recognizes NAAE members who are at the pinnacle of their profession—those who are innovators and catalysts for student success in agricultural education. The award recognizes Teresa for her leadership in civic, community, agriculture/agribusiness, and professional activities.
Teachers Turn the Key Scholarship
Danielle Hodges, Agricultural Teacher, Franklin County High School, Franklin County Public Schools, was awarded the NAAE, Teachers Turn the Key Scholarship. The NAAE offers this scholarship to encourage young teachers to remain in the profession and recognize the importance of active participation in professional development and activities.
U. S. Presidential
The U. S. Presidential Scholars Program was established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and since that time, the program has honored more than 7,000 outstanding high school seniors. Beginning in 2016, outstanding students who demonstrate excellence in Career and Technical Education (CTE) were included for recognition. For detailed information about the criteria and process for nominating students, refer to Superintendent’s Memo 286-17.

Creating Excellence Awards Recognition
The Virginia Department of Education, in collaboration with the Virginia Community College System, invites school divisions to participate in the Creating Excellence Awards recognition program for 2017-2018. The Creating Excellence Awards recognize excellence at the local, regional, and state levels for exemplary CTE programs, advisory committees, and business and industry partnerships. STEM Center for Learning Engineering by Design Consortium
The International Technology and Engineering Educators Association’s Engineering (ITEEA) byDesign™ Standard Edition curriculum is now available at no cost to Virginia’s K-12 teachers. As a consortium member, the standard edition PDF version of each EbD™ course is available for Virginia teachers to download, (refer to How to Access Engineering by Design™ In Virginia). 2018 Virginia Educators Rising Leadership State Conference
Prince William County Public Schools will host the Educators Rising-Virginia State Leadership Competition and Conference at C. D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge on Saturday, March 3. For more information, visit Link: https://www.educatorsrising.org/.
CTE New Teacher Institute
The VDOE will offer the New Teacher Institute July 9-13, 2018, in Richmond, Virginia. The targeted audience is career and technical education teachers who enter the classroom directly from positions in business and industry. The application for the CTE New Teacher Institute will be published in a Superintendent’s Memo in the spring.

The Virginia Association for Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (VATFACS) Professional Development Institute will be held at The Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel, 5700 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach, Virginia, July 29-August 2, 2018.

Secondary Enrollment Demographic Form (SEDF) Fall Report
Report enrollment counts that are recorded in the fall SRC for all CTE state-approved 6-, 9-, 12-, and 18-week first semester and yearlong (36-week) classes.Submission Method: CTE Administrator submits to VDOE through SSWS* Fall Master Schedule Collection.NOTE: Regional CTE Centers report MSC data using Excel files directly to VDOE Office of Information Management.

Career and Technical EducationFollow-up Survey of Program Completers (from School Year 2016-17)
Conduct the 2018 follow-up of the 2017 CTE Program Completers approximately 9–12 months after graduation. The survey measures completers’ transitions to postsecondary education or employment, their satisfaction, and quality of their high school education.Submission Method: Online data entry (managed by the Center for Survey Research at the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service).
