PRESS RELEASE Casa San Jose condemns Trump’s administration latest attempt to undermine the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program Pittsburgh, PA, July 30 th , 2020_ Today, Casa San Jose condemns the U.S. Department of Homeland and Security (DHS) memo issued on July 28 th , 2020 which puts in jeopardy the lives of 300,000 young people in danger of deportation by denying new applications. This action has been taken despite the fact that the Maryland district court issued a ruling on July 17 th requiring the government to abide by the Supreme Court’s decision to accept new DACA enrollees and travel authorizations. “This order is yet another assault against DACA recipients and is only causing confusion and fear amongst an already vulnerable population. This new memo is threatening our communities’ long-term security and hopes as now their future becomes unpredictable and unstable. Now, people will be less likely to invest in their communities here in the U.S. as they will be living in fear of deportation,” said Monica Ruiz, Casa San Jose’s Executive Director, regarding DHS’s detrimental action toward young immigrants. Monique Herrera, Casa San Jose’s Bilingual Navigator and current DACA recipient, commented, “This new order means that I might have to go back to Mexico and leave my children behind. The education is better here. My children will have far more opportunities if they stay in this country. I would not be able to take them with me because of the high rates of crime back there. I will continue fighting for my rights to stay here as this is the only home that I know.” In this context, Casa San Jose urges the Senate to enact permanent protections and solutions such as H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019, that help people without hurting them. Casa San Jose condemns Trump’s administration latest attempt to undermine the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program

Pittsburgh, PA, July 30th, 2020_ Today, Casa San Jose condemns the U.S. Department of Homeland and Security (DHS) memo issued on July 28th, 2020 which puts in jeopardy the lives of 300,000 young people in danger of deportation by denying new applications. This action has been taken despite the fact that the Maryland district court issued a ruling on July 17th requiring the government to abide by the Supreme Court’s decision to accept new DACA enrollees and travel authorizations.

“This order is yet another assault against DACA recipients and is only causing confusion and fear amongst an already vulnerable population. Now, people will be less likely to invest in their communities here in the U.S. as they will be living in fear of deportation,” said Monica Ruiz, Casa San Jose’s Executive Director, regarding DHS’s detrimental action toward young immigrants.

In this context, Casa San Jose urges the Senate to enact permanent protections and solutions such as H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019, that help people without hurting them. This is also an urgent call to automatically extend DACA and the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) work authorization including critical infrastructure workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At Casa San Jose, we will keep advocating in favor of DACA prospects and current recipients’ safety, economic security, health and wellbeing. These young adults deserve an opportunity to pursue their dreams and aspirations in a country they know as home.
