Tomorrow – Cheek DNA Lab

Purpose: To Isolate your own DNA from your cheek cells.

Notes: BRING YOUR TOOTHBRUSH! DO NOT BRUSH YOUR TEETH UNTIL CLASS – I will bring tooth paste (and you can too)

Materials

0.9% Salt Water Solution 25% Soap Solution 95% Ethyl Alcohol (EtOH) Cheek Cells Various Cups Stirring Rods

Create a Flow Chart

1. Swish 10mL of salt water in your mouth for about 30s-1min.

2. Spit water into small cup. 3. Pour spit water into tube containing

5mL of soap solution. 4. Gently mix this solution for about 2-3

minutes. 5. Pour 10-15mL of ice cold EtOH down the

side of the tube without mixing the layers.

6. Gently rotate the tubes.
