Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Foundation’s Organ Project - Q&A From Town Hall [email protected] | 804-212-3898 We received many excellent questions at the Organ Town Hall Meetings. Here’s one of them: Will we be without organ music before the new one is installed? We hope not. This initiative will be accomplished over a period of five years. The choir organ is scheduled for installation in late 2021. We will not have to remove the gallery organ until mid-2023. At that time the already-installed choir organ will serve as our main organ. As long as the current gallery organ lasts until late 2021, we should have organ music at the Cathedral.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. With God’s help, this process will strengthen us spiritually.

1. How do I begin the RCIA process? If you are interested in becoming Catholic, we welcome your questions about what it means to live in the Catholic tradition.

2. What if I feel unsure of the RCIA process?Feeling unsure is natural. After all, joining a particular faith community is a significant step.

3. When do I begin? The first step is to make an appointment with the RCIA coordinator to discuss your questions and talk about the RCIA process.

Please contact Maria Thorsen with any questions: [email protected]

RCIA would like to thank Leslie and Andy Murray for a delicious dinner on Tuesday night. We also enjoy a wonderful presentation

by Monsignor Lane about the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Blessing of the Easter EggsDo you know about the tradition of the blessing of the Easter Eggs? The

custom of blessing food for Easter arose from the discipline of fasting throughout Lent and the special Easter fast during the Easter Triduum.

According to custom, food may be blessed before or after the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday or on Easter morning for consumption at the first meal

of Easter, when fasting is ended and the Church is filled with joy. Easter Sunday morning before the 9:00 am Mass, bring your dyed Easter eggs in a basket to the right of the altar. Before Mass ends, Monsignor

Golden will call anyone who brought Easter eggs to retrieve their basket and have the Eggs blessed. Hand the blessed Eggs out to parishioners on

the Cathedral plaza. Be sure to take your egg home, and share a part of it with all your guests at your Easter meal!

April 7Isaiah 43 : 16-21Philippians 3 : 8-14 John 8 : 1-11

Fifth Sunday of Lent The Gospel for the fifth Sunday of Lent continues to offer lessons about God’s mercy and forgiveness. Last Sunday we heard the Parable of the Prodigal Son from the Gospel of Luke. Today we hear not a parable, but the report from John’s Gospel of an encounter among Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees, and a woman caught in adultery...

...Today’s Gospel begins by reporting that Jesus is again teaching the crowds in the vicinity of the Temple. The scribes and the Pharisees approach Jesus, bringing a woman who has been caught in the act of adultery. They put to Jesus the question of what ought to be done in this case.

The Pharisees state clearly that according to the Law of Moses, those caught in the act of adultery were to be stoned to death. Under Roman occupation, however, the Jewish people did not have the authority to execute people; this is cited in John’s passion narrative. To answer the Pharisees’ question, Jesus must propose an action that will be either con-trary to the Law of Moses or contrary to Roman law. The purpose of the question appears to be similar to the question about paying taxes found in Mark 12:13-17. Either answer, yes or no, will support the Pharisees’ case against Jesus.

Jesus avoids the trap, however, by offering an answer that was not anticipated by those who posed the question. Jesus, after writing on the ground with his finger, addresses those who stand before him and suggests that the one without sin cast the first stone. Jesus then returns to his writing. This Scripture reading, by the way, is the only evidence we have of Jesus writing. Yet there are no specific details about what he wrote.

We can easily imagine the scene as the Pharisees and the elders disperse, one by one. Jesus has eluded the trap they had prepared...

...Jesus’ response to those who accuse the woman is more than a caution to us about making judgment of others. It is a profound lesson in divine mercy and forgiveness. As sinners, we are all unworthy to judge the sins of others and we would stand convicted by God for our transgressions. Yet Jesus, the one without sin and thus our judge, offers us who are sin-ners his mercy and forgiveness. Redeemed by Jesus’ compassion, we are sent to sin no more and to live in God’s love and peace.
