Dear Parishioners: Brother or sister, are you saved? Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and turned your life over to Him? Well, if you are living out the promises your godparents (or you) made at your baptism, you certainly have accepted Christ. But does that mean that your salvation is assured? Our Lord requires more commitment than that. In fact, in his letter to the Philippians, St. Paul exhorts us to “work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” Today’s second reading gives the best summary of how we are to go about working out our salvation. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul tells us, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh, I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church.” What could possibly be lacking in the afflictions of Christ? Is He not God Incarnate? Of course, He is. Could He not have saved us with just a tiny fraction of what He endured? Most certainly! Then why do St. Paul—and we—have to make up what is lacking through suffering in our own bodies? God’s salvific plan for us is much more than covering the bad deeds of our souls with the grace won for us on the Cross, absolving us of any need of participation in our salvation. We need to participate so that we can truly become holy, as God is holy. To that end, he granted us the dignity of being able to complete our salvation through enduring, indeed, embracing, our suffering here on earth. But wait, there’s more! Our prayers, works, joys and sufferings can contribute to the benefit of the whole Body of Christ. We can actually affect the salvation and sanctification of many of our brothers and sisters in the Church, both here and in purgatory. We can, in a very real sense, become co-redeemers with Christ Our Lord. It is said that our age does not have a shortage of faith. What we actually have is a shortage of saints. Saints understood their mission within the Body of Christ and courageously refused to let any hardship or suffering, large or small, get in the way of their commitment to their Lord. Most of us will never have to endure a fraction of the difficulties of many canonized saints. But we are called to endure our everyday difficulties bravely—and, if that is God’s Will for our lives, it is enough to do our share to fill up in our own bodies what is lacking to the afflictions of Christ.
Queridos Feligreses: Hermano o hermana, ¿eres salvo? ¿Has aceptado a Jesucristo como tu Señor y Salvador personal y le entregaste tu vida? Bueno, si estás cumpliendo las promesas que tus padrinos (o tú) hiciste en tu bautismo, ciertamente has aceptado a Cristo. ¿Pero eso significa que tu salvación está asegurada? Nuestro Señor requiere más compromiso que eso. De hecho, en su carta a los Filipenses, San Pablo nos exhorta a "trabajar en tu salvación con temor y temblor". La segunda lectura de hoy ofrece el mejor resumen de cómo debemos trabajar para lograr nuestra salvación. En su carta a los Colosenses, Pablo nos dice: “Ahora me
regocijo en mis sufrimientos por tu bien y en mi carne, estoy llenando lo que falta en las aflicciones de Cristo en nombre de su cuerpo, que es la iglesia.” ¿Qué podría faltar en las aflicciones de Cristo? ¿No es Dios encarnado? Claro que lo es. ¿No podría habernos salvado con solo una pequeña fracción de lo que soportó? ¡Seguramente! Entonces, ¿por qué San Pablo, y nosotros, tenemos que compensar lo que falta a través
del sufrimiento en nuestros propios cuerpos? El plan salvífico de Dios para nosotros es mucho más que cubrir las malas obras de nuestras almas con la gracia ganada por nosotros en la Cruz, absolviéndonos de cualquier necesidad de participación en nuestra salvación. Necesitamos participar para que podamos llegar a ser verdaderamente santos, como Dios es santo. Con ese fin, nos otorgó la dignidad de poder completar nuestra salvación a través de soportar, de hecho, abrazar, nuestro sufrimiento aquí en la tierra. ¡Pero espera hay mas! Nuestras oraciones, obras, alegrías y sufrimientos pueden contribuir al beneficio de todo el Cuerpo de Cristo. De hecho, podemos afectar la salvación y la santificación de muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas en la Iglesia, tanto aquí como en el purgatorio. Podemos, en un sentido muy real, convertirnos en redentores con Cristo nuestro Señor. Se dice que nuestra época no tiene escasez de fe. Lo que realmente tenemos es una escasez de santos. Los santos entendieron su misión dentro del Cuerpo de Cristo y se negaron valientemente a permitir que cualquier dificultad o sufrimiento, grande o pequeño, se interponga en su compromiso con su Señor. La mayoría de nosotros nunca tendremos que soportar una fracción de las dificultades de muchos santos canonizados. Pero estamos llamados a soportar con valentía nuestras dificultades cotidianas, y, si esa es la Voluntad de Dios para nuestras vidas, basta con hacer nuestra parte para llenar en nuestros propios cuerpos lo que falta a las aflicciones de Cristo.

St. Stephen's Table this past weekend. Our guests were welcomed with
smiling faces, had a delicious hot dog and hamburger meal with lots of sides
and dessert. They were very
appreciative to our parish for providing this free monthly meal.

On Saturday, August 3rd, Jovenes Para Cristo (Youth for Christ) is celebrating their 6 year anniversary in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Mass is at 10:00am and the festivities will follow in the gym.

Sol Azteca Scholarship Announcement Sol Azteca in collaboration with the Parish Youth Ministry
(PYM) will sponsor two $500.00 scholarships for two of our Youth Parishioners. The purpose is to help subsidize school
costs. The family or the applicant needs to be a Saint Stephen's Parishioner. They are required to be Seniors in High
School or at any level of College or University. The students have to be enrolled in the
2019-2020 school year.
FORMS will be distributed at the end of each Mass by PYM members or in the office during regular business hours.
