College Newsletter Week 8 Term 2 Friday 20 June 2014
Today’s boys...tomorrow’s gentlemen
CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 8 Term 2
From the PrincipalAboriginal Reconciliation and CBC
In 2014, the official celebration of
NAIDOC Week will take place between
6 to 13 July across the country. It provides
the opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander cultures and
to recognise the contributions that
Indigenous Australians make to our
country and our society. Because that
week falls during the school holidays in
WA, our College has elected to provide an
early acknowledgement.
On Monday we conducted our NAIDOC
assembly and sought to focus the
attention of all students and staff on our
obligation to promote social cohesion
between Aboriginal people and the wider
Australian community. A special guest
at our assembly was Mr Neville Collard
who spoke about the local history of
Aboriginal people. Mr Collard returned
to the College today to conduct a
programme for all Year 7 students where
they were engaged with local Noongar
elders on topics as diverse as stone axe
making, Aboriginal art and the stolen
generation. The coming days will also
include reciprocal visits between our
students and some of those from Clontarf
Aboriginal College.
Perhaps our most ambitious attempt to
promote reconciliation begins next week

when two separate groups of senior
students commence a period of time with
the Kiwirrkurra and Parnngurr Aboriginal
Communities in the Kimberleys. We wish
these boys and the accompanying staff
a most educative experience and look
forward to the benefits of their learning
on their return.
At CBC Fremantle we seek to be a
community which is inclusive and in
which all members are reconciled with
each other. Everyone is welcome to be
a part of our school and, within this
environment, our boys are taught that
difference is something to be respected
and celebrated. Unfortunately, this
is not always evident in our broader
society. Many people lack the will or the
confidence to believe that meaningful
reconciliation with the original inhabitants
of this land is achievable. I thank you as
always for the support you offer in each of
your homes in advocating a contrary view.
It is hoped that the modelling which is
provided by our school community and
in your homes may offer inspiration and
suggest possibilities for society in general.
It is further hoped that the individual and
specific experiences of our boys while
at school will inspire them to be positive
agents for change. This is critical work in
ensuring that our College fully embraces
and reflects the EREA touchstone of
Justice and Solidarity.
Mr Shaun Kenny
Principal

On Friday, CBC Fremantle’s Junior
Hockey team narrowly missed the
Ross Meadow Cup final by only
one goal.
Led by Captains Henry Rogerson
and Harry Golding, the team went
undefeated in their three pool
games, beating Bunbury Cathedral
Grammar 3-nil, St Mark’s 1-0 and
Melville Senior High School 4-0.
After the pool round the team
moved into the second phase of the
carnival where they played the other
winners of the two other pools.
Their first game in this Super Match group
was against hockey specialist school,
Como Senior High. In the 20 minute game
the team shared about 50 percent of the
play, but lost 2-0. The second goal, which
later proved to be very costly, was scored
with only five seconds to go in the match.
CBC’s second game in the Super Match
group quickly became an outright semi-
final as Como Senior High beat John XXIII
College in the other game by one goal.
This meant that CBC Fremantle needed to
beat JTC as a draw would not allow them
to progress to the final on goal difference.
The CBC Fremantle team controlled most
of the 20 minute game but could not get
any clear shots on goal because the JTC
team flooded all 11 players back in to
their defensive 25. At the end of fulltime
the score was locked at 0-0 which meant
JTC progressed to the final to play the
eventual winners, Como.
CBC’s team was a mixture of Years 7 to
9 students with experienced players Nic
De Luca, Harry Golding, Finlay Martin,
Henry Rogerson and Tom Moulin leading
by example all day. Golding’s outstanding

talent was recognised by the umpires
and organisers and he received the Trent
Mitton medal for Best Player at the
carnival.

The Parent Auxiliary is again running the
‘Mums Raising Teenage Boys” seminars
which have been very successful for the
last two years.
Mums Raising Teenage Boys
Monday 4 August, 6.30pm – 9.00pm
Cost: $10.00
However well-prepared mothers are
logically, the emotional response to
having a boy is often still, “Wow! This is
unknown territory”. It is true that for
many mothers, the idea of raising a son
carries its own set of worries.
As the primary female role model in a
boy’s life, mothers play an important role
Mums raising teenage boysin the development of their son’s identity
including their ability to be nurturing.
This in turn affects how they relate to
others, particularly to girls and women.
Mums Raising Boys In A Solo Parent Or Fly In, Fly Out Family
Tuesday 5 August, 6.00pm – 8.30pm.
Cost: $10.00
When your partner is regularly away or
when you are a solo parent different
family life challenges can result. Often
there are specific emotional and practical
difficulties to manage such as feeling
isolated or lonely, or not having a partner
available to deal with discipline and other
parenting issues. This seminar explores
parenting teenage boys from a more
‘solo’ perspective and gives mums useful
and supportive strategies to help them
meet challenges more effectively.
The cost of each event is $10 with the
College again supporting both evenings.
Places are limited to 25 mums per
workshop. To secure your place,
book online at the College website
