Times of Changes and Innovation: New Economy and New Prosperity
The world economy swayed back and forth like a candle in a wind during the financial crisis of 2007-2008 and the aftermath of the 2008-2012 global recession, and is now in a process of slow and painful recovery. Such a process is described as “the New Normal”, a term coined by PIMCO’s president Mohamed El-Erian. As a principal part of the global economy, the Chinese economy has inevitably been in the new normal of low growth. The Chinese government is trying to change the growth model by substantially loosening its grip, kick-starting emerging industries, and boosting the private sector so that the flagging economy can pick up steam. As the Chinese government is committed to pushing through the reform, the “mechanism reform” has captured much attention again.
Industrial innovations, in contrast, are in full swing: Smartphones, wearable devices and in-vehicle information systems…mobile apps are reaching every corner of people’s life, rejuvenating a string of sunset industries. Meanwhile, novel concepts, such as the Internet of Things and Internet of Vehicles, have moved from the lab to the market. Though at variance with classical business theories, “long tail” and “for-free” business models have gained a foothold in the market, thanks to sophisticated digital technologies. As a result, we can easily go shopping, check a map (LBS), find a restaurant, or call a taxi via mobile apps. In the era of big data, a whirlwind of information is reshaping how we live, work and think.

Forum 2009
China and the World - in the Time of Global Challenges
Year 2009 is extremely difficult for all countries across the globe. With the world economy mired in deep recession, there is a resurgence of Keynesianism. Questions are being raised about both monetary and industrial policies of different nations. China, a high-growth yet still emerging economy, thus faces comparatively high expectations of its role in restructuring the world economy. All eyes are fixed on China, at a time when the country faces some of the greatest challenges in its history: the relationship between the RMB and U.S. dollar or Euro, the gap between China’s foreign exchange reserves and
America’s tremendous debt, and China’s new role on the world stage. One thing is clear: the challenges faced by China are also the challenges of the entire world.

The Sleeping Giant is Awake: China’s 30-Year Business Reform in Retrospect
“China is a sleeping giant”, Napoleon Bonaparte said in 1803 "Let her sleep, for
when she wakes she will shake the world.“ Nearly two centuries later, China is truly
awake. It began with the epoch-making conference in December 1978, triggering
off China’s reform and opening-up to the world. Since then China has embarked on
an adventure to shift from an economic model based on rigid central planning to a
market economy. Within three decades, more than 500,000 foreign-funded
enterprises have registered in China. The economy, previously dominated by public
ownership, has been varied and the private economy has blossomed, contributing
to 40 percent of the growth of the gross domestic product and offering the most
new jobs. China is transformed into a global economic powerhouse.
