the red carpet at the Academy Awards.

In August, Picard signed a long-term exclusive contract with an American marketing company that will be taking us to a whole new level, she says.

She is looking to at least dou-ble her production next year as a result of the deal, and as she no longer needs to concentrate on the U.S. market she is turn-ing her attention to Europe and Asia. Recently, she returned from a yoga show in the UK. Its her first time looking at that market since its an expensive one to pursue.

Even having a coffee there is an expense, she says with a laugh.

Her collection garnered a positive response at the show, giving her the confidence to move forward in that market.

Weve always wanted to pursue it. But its a secondary market when you have such a big one next door.

    Regardless of her success, her

    philosophy has remained the same.

Picard studies yogic philoso-phy and creates pieces inspired by that knowledge in alignment with ancient yogic concepts.

Nothing has changed on the philosophy, the intention, my thoughts on how women should be adorned. None of that has changed, she says. Its really been my focus, my grounding core, and also my passion.

Donning a specific piece of jewelry, says Picard, can sup-port you in your day.

Youre taking that with you as a positive affirmation that in turn becomes a yogic medita-tion, she says.

I use yoga because thats my background, but if we have some sort of talisman or touch-stone piece that can remind us of our intents of the day then it becomes more powerful than just a piece of jewelry. It sup-ports who you are, how you are in your day, and I think thats

a nice addition to just plac-ing a piece of jewelry on your body.

Right now, she herself is adorned in pieces from her recent collection, and says her favourites change all the time.

Each time I create a col-lection its because Ive been inspired by something thats happened in months prior, or its reflective of my personal evolution or what Ive seen in my travels, she says.

Picard recalls launching The Sonja Picard Collection 10 years ago.

In the beginning I was cre-ating pieces and I didnt even have a bench or torches here in my studio . . . I would get in the car and drive all the pieces over to a woman who would solder and set the stones, and then I would bring them back to my studio to finish them.

She started with about 40 pieces in her collection and

today has created more than 400.

Three years ago Picard start-ed a couture line, and last year launched a bridal line that includes rings representing eternity. One has a mantra that is meant to bring blessings and success to new beginnings.

In October she launched 50 new pieces influenced by a trip she took to India at the start of this year.

I went really large scale, she says, incorporating the lotus heart as well as skulls as a rep-resentation of transformation, inspired by the goddess Kali

who she kept coming across during her trip.

The lotus heart was because I have someone wonderful in my life and that fell together well, she says. Those things happen to everyone all the time to some degree, so I dont feel its so much personal as it can touch anybody at any time.

Picard carries a sketch pad with her wherever she goes in case inspiration strikes. She will scribble ideas down, rip them out and put them on one large piece of paper to see how her designs might compliment each other.

She photocopies her sketch-es and stores them separate-lythese are valuable scraps of paper.

From there she will draw the piece to scale and then trans-fer that drawing to a piece of wax which she carefully hand carves in her studio.

Once its carved it is cast in a rubber mould from which it can be injected with gold or sil-ver by a technician.

Picard will put on every piece to see how it wears, and then it is priced, photographed and catalogued.

    Right from the second

I create it to when the final photograph is shot, it can take months, she says.

September to Christmas eve is the busiest time at her Lad-ner studio.

Lots of men come in the last week before Christmas, she says.

To keep up with the demand, she is opening the studio for extended Christmas hours Dec. 4, 11, and 18, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Sonja Picard Collec-tion Studio is at 4860 Chisholm Street, or visit sonjapicard.com. Appointments can also be made by calling 604-952-5242.

WWhat do you get when you

assemble some of the top culi-nary expertise in South Delta in one place and lay down a chal-lenge to elevate the humble butternut squash into haute cuisine?

The mouth watering result is a cavalcade of dishes display-ing creativity, flair and down-right great flavours.

Five chefs were invited to the kitchen of Illuminate Restoran-te in Tsawwassen to take part in the South Delta Leaders sec-ond annual Chefs Showdown. And they did themselves proud, each fashioning completely unique creations.

The defending champion was Tobias MacDonald, chef de cui-sine at La Belle Auberge in Lad-ner. He was joined by chef Dawn Alexander from the Beach Grove

Golf Club, chef Richard Downes from Delta Town & Country Inn, Ron Intveld, kitchen manager at White Spot in Tsawwassen, and host Roland Smith, chef and owner of Illuminate Restorante.

Each were given a week ahead to prepare, and an hour of kitchen time to complete their dishes and then serve to a panel of three judges.

Sampling the dishes were Chrissie Bowker, publisher of the South Delta Leader, Dale Saip, chair of the Delta Board of Education, and Andy Carter, manager of Thrifty Foods in Tsawwassen.

Taking top honours and the title in this years showdown was Ron Intveld, kitchen man-ager from the Tsawwassen White Spot.

    Saip said the judging panel

was overwhelmed by the dis-play of culinary skill.

Theres so much creativity with you people it scares me a

little bit sometime how much goes into something like this, he said.

Butternut squash capelettiRoland Smith, Illuminate Restorante

    Directions:Peel and cube the squash,

toss in salt and pepper, a touch of honey and olive oil.

Roast covered in the oven at 300 degrees until soft.

Meanwhile, on low heat saut the chopped vegetables until soft, add the soft squash and cook together until the mixture becomes slightly dry.

Check seasoning, add the curry powder, cheese and bread crumbs to stiffen the mixture. Let the stuffing cool.

Cut the fresh pasta into 2x2 inch squares.

Egg wash with egg whites, place a ball of stuffing in the middle fold the edge over to make a triangle, bring the two

corners together and pinch to make a round capeletti. It might require some practice.

When the capeletti are all done, blanch them of in boil-ing salted water until they float, drain and add a little olive oil so they dont stick together.

To garnish use red wine glaze,

truffle oil, sauted portabello mushrooms and parmigiano fondue.

Roland also recommends the capeletti in a cream sauce with fresh parsley.

They are also tasty with just a little olive oil and Parmigiano cheese.

Directions: Peel the squash and scoop out the seeds. Cut

into 3 cm chunks, heat butter and saute for three minutes then place in 300 degree oven for about 45 minute or very soft.

Meanwhile, heat the chicken stock, add

the garlic, ginger and lemon grass and cook for 30 to 45 minutes.

Everything should smell nice and aromatic. Add the coconut milk, then the curry paste, and whisk until well incorporated.

Return to a simmer over medium heat and allow to reduce slightly, maybe 10 minutes or so, then add squash and puree in a blender.

Since the fish sauce is very salty add it bit by bit, tasting often until desired seasoning is reached. Add a squeeze of fresh lime juice if desired and add a little more curry paste if a spicier soup is preferred.

Combine oil and cilantro in blender and blend on high speed for one minute. Pour into pot and cook on medium heat, stirring con-stantly until emulsion breaks, this should hap-

pen as the mixture reaches 70 Celsius. Pour into fine mesh sieve and allow to pass through without agitating for about 10 minutes.

Serve soup in a preheated soup bowl and drizzle with cilantro oil.

Serve immediately (Pictured: MacDonald presented the soup in a gelatinous ball).

TA courtyard ChristmasBIAs second family event at the Tsawwassen Shopping Centre

The Business Improvement Association (BIA) of Tsawwas-sen and the Tsawwassen Shop-ping Centre will host a Christ-mas event under the glass roof of the courtyard.

Tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 4), from 3 to 5 p.m. the BIA will help the community kick start the holidays in Tsawwassen.

This is the third year we organize this community event which is held outdoors, in the courtyard close to RONA to really embrace the winter sea-son, said the BIAs executive director Ana Arciniega. The event is free and people are encouraged to bring a donation for the food bank.

Activities include Christmas carols performed by the South-pointe Academy Middle School Choir and the Delta Community Choir, as well as a special presen-

tation by Victorian carolers. Santa Claus will be on hand

to take pictures and give chil-dren a goody bag with a $5 Tsawwassen Shopping Dollar coupon that can be used at more than 50 local businesses.

Bank of Montreal staff will host a craft area where kids can decorate Christmas tree orna-ments that will be added to the Tsawwassen Christmas tree.

And special guest Rudy from Operation Red Nose will pay a visit to let revelers know about the organizations holiday safe driving campaign.

Guests are also invited to decorate gingerbread cookies courtesy of Hal & June Meats and Deli, enjoy coffee and cider courtesy of Petras Arts Kafe, and hot chocolate and candy canes thanks to the 56 Street Bakery.

We hope to offer a break from the busy shopping season and a moment to pause and enjoy the reason we celebrate at this time of the year. Come, have a bit of fun and enjoy your

    community and friends, said Arciniega.

For information about other BIA events in the community call 604-943-0502 or visit www.shoptsawwassen.com.

The community is brightly lit with holiday cheer at night thanks to BIA board members and nine students from Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen who recently volunteered a Sunday to string lights up the 80 trees along 56 Street and 12 Avenue. TPresent helpFree gift wrapping for Tsawwassen shoppers aids non-profits

Tsawwassen shoppers are invited to take a load off their busy schedules by having their gifts wrapped for free this Christmas.

The Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen (BIA) is once again offering this service to the community, with the help of local non-profit organizations.

This program allows our com-mercial businesses to focus on their sales without taking valu-able staff time wrapping packages. Thanks to Century Group, which allows us free use of space at the Town Centre Mall, we are able to provide this service at a central location, said Ana Arciniega, the BIAs executive director.

The BIA has turned this ser-vice into a fundraising oppor-tunity for local groups.

    We offer eleven days of

wrapping service and it will be done this year by volunteers from four community groups, said Arciniega.

This years group are the Canadian Mental Health Delta branch, Soutpointe Academy Grads, Beta Sigma Phi soror-ity and Reach Child and Youth Development Society. The BIA pays a fee per volunteer per hour worked towards their group. In addition, cash donations that are received will be divided equally.

It is a win-win situation as the BIA will be able to offer the service and the groups will have a chance to raise needed funds plus raise awareness about the work they do, said Arciniega.

The BIA wants to encourage shoppers to use this service.

In the past, some customers thought that the wrapping ser-

vice was only for Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall customers. That is not the casethis ser-vice is open to anyone shop-ping at any commercial busi-ness in Tsawwassen.

Shoppers only need to bring their purchases and their receipt to the mall location and their packages will be beauti-fully wrapped.

The wrapping service will be offered on Dec. 11 and 12, and 16th to 23rd from 1 to 5 p.m. and on Dec. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any donations of unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items will be directed to Deltassist.

For more information, check the BIA website at www.shopt-sawwassen.com.

Beta Sigma Phi is among the groups to benefit from a free BIA gift wrapping service for Tswwassen shoppers. Rob Newell file photo

thrift store (1308 56 St.) where proceeds from every item pur-chased go to programs aimed at empowering youth.

DYSL (Delta Youth Support Line) executive director Debbie Lindsey says the WearHouse has been buzzing with custom-ers since they began bringing out their Christmas items in mid-October.

We keep pretty new stuff out, says Lindsey. They can find fabulous deals on all Christmas decorations for the house, tree, or outside.

Donations are always accept-ed, either in the store between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. (until 8 p.m. on Thursdays) or in the bin out-side after hours.

It was with the help of dona-tions and a whole lot of volun-teer hours that the WearHouse underwent a makeover last spring.

The repainted and reorga-nized store helps highlight many of their items, and Lind-sey says she constantly hears comments from customers about how good the place looks.

It helps that customers are often greeted by smiling faces toothe WearHouse has about 20 volunteers, and Lindsey says shes proud of their enthusiasm and friendliness.

People say all the time they feel welcomed as well as get great deals, she says.

Recently, money raised for DYSL was distributed to youth at each Delta secondary

school. Groups in the seven high schools received $1,000 for Youth Initiated Programs, projects based on original ideas by students for commu-nity events and fundraisers. In the past students have focused on bullying, helping less for-

    tunate families, and environ-mental issues.

I got it in TsawwassenShopping local snags winners $100

The Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen wanted to hear what people love about shopping in Tsawwassen during its I Got It In Tsawwassen contest. Five winners were chosen from more than 500 submissions, and each received $100 shopping dollars redeemable at more than 50 local stores. Read on to learn why Angie, Karen, Paul, Bob and Chris decided to spend their time and money at local shops and services.

    Kristine Salzmann

I got it in Tsawwassen ... service

Paul Biedermann had a do-it-yourself project on his hands, but it seemed most stores didnt want him to do it himself.

He needed a water-based floor finish to tint areas of his cork floors that had changed colour due to sun exposure.

The regular places one would ordinarily go to for paint would not supply me with raw tint that I could mix myself to get the exact colours and transparency I needed, he says.

Shannan OBrien, owner of Sublime Art Supplies and Gallery in the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, took the time to help Bie-

dermann find a suitable product and showed him how to use it, taking out brushes and mixing the colours so he could see what the finish would look like.

She seemed to be sincerely interested in solving my prob-lem and answered all my questions with a polite and friendly attitude, says Bieder-mann. I was impressed and overjoyed to be able to complete my project.

I got it in Tsawwassen ... wellness

After spending 13 days in the emergen-cy wards of various hospitals in the Lower

Mainland, Bob Bell had had enough. The Tsawwassen resident was experi-

encing pressure and pains in his chest, and was frustrated no one seemed to know what was wrong. Bell was sent home with medical prescriptions that would cost him $700 a month, and worried he could have a heart attack any day.

His wife suggested he head to the Nat-ural Comfort and Wellness Centre (#117 1077 56 St.).

Bell tried reconnective healing with ther-apist Beverley Hawkins, and therapeutic touch with certified practitioner Cheryl Larden, just a few of the many services offered at the centre.

Both of them put me in a dream world, says Bell.

Its been two years since his original scare, and Bell hasnt been back to the emergency ward since and has dropped his medications.

My stress levels decreased and I began to feel well again. Natural Comfort is a place of healing and great comfort I would recommend it to all.

After hiking the West Coast Trail, a 75 km long backpacking trip along the southwest edge of Vancouver Island,

On the way home from the island to New Westminster, they stopped in Tsawwassen for some pampering at Spa Time.

I got it in Tsawwassen ... knowledge

When Karen Golden had a number of questions related to her health and new prescrip-tions, she turned to Tsawwas-sen Pharmasave.

The friendly and extreme-ly knowledgeable pharma-

cists at Pharmasave in Tsaw-wassen went out of their way to provide prompt, personal help. They are so easy to talk to, said Golden, founder of the local group Get Real The-atre.

One of the reasons she was drawn to the Tsawwassen Pharmasave was the infor-mation sessions they host at the Tsawwassen library. Phar-masaves Henry and Sandra Tsang say they often hold seminars there, at no cost, on topics from how to quit smok-ing to diabetes.

Residents can visit the store, at 1244 56 Street, to find out about upcoming sessions, although they usually take a break from hosting them dur-ing the holiday season.

Henry Tsang notes their store is also a drop-off location to recycle unused or expired medication, as well as some-where customers can rent equipment such as crutches and wheelchairs.

I got it in Tsawwassen ... integrity

Everyone should know theres a good old fashioned honest mechanic in town, says Tsawwassen resident Chris Moore.

Hes talking about Brians Auto (1621 56 St.), the shop he recommended in the BIAs Got It In Tsawwassen contest.

I drive two old cars, so Im always here

with something, he says. One day, Moore went to Brians, a des-

perate man in a hurry, with a car that had a rattle that sounded terminal, he explains.

Brian listened, diagnosed, then dis-appeared underneath with tools only to emerge a few seconds after the rattle had stopped. I was amazed, not only was my car cured, but Brian refused to charge me

for something he fixed so easily.Moore adds its nice to know owner

Brian McMillan, who celebrates the shops 10 year anniversary next year, can be trusted to tell him when a service can be postponed, and to sell him only whats needed.

McMillan credits his staff as well. We have a very good staff of guys, who

for the most part live in the community.

  • Christmas 2010 | South Delta Celebrate 27

IIt took a while for James Price, owner of Ladner Vil-lage Hardware, to get his head around shopping for Christmas in the spring time. But after all, it wasnt like hed need to wrap the gifts.

Store them, yes. Unwrap them, yes.

They come in by the pal-let full, says Price who along with his staff spend a good part of November digging out from boxes the Christmas stock he purchased at retail trade shows in B.C. and Manitoba in March and April.

Often, in the months in between, Price says he has for-gotten about some of the items that have been labeled Christ-mas and packed away in an off-site warehouse.

Its like an early Christmas for me and my staff, he says of the box opening sessions as seasonal product is put on the stores shelves.

And whats among the goodies this year?

Price says its always hard to decide what to stock and buyers like him have to guard against the urge to buy out the entire show they attend.

    Keeping track of trends is

important, and one he has fol-lowed with this years inven-tory is the demand for good old incandescent Christmas lights.

People have come in and asked for the old style lights because they dont like the new LED ones, Price says. They prefer the ones from their childhood, the ones that have brighter colours and dont mind paying a little extra to have them lit up. Its only once a year.

Since the switch to the energy saving LEDs started a few years ago, the incandescent lights are getting increasingly scarce. That prompted Price to source a two to three-year supply of the old fashioned lights.

I guess when that supply runs out, then theyre gone, he says. But well have them if people want them until then.

Another item that caught Prices attention at a retail show this past spring was a selection of pewter tree ornaments in the shape of tools he says would be perfect for the handyman.

And they dont just have to go on the tree, he adds.

People are now putting them on their wrapped gifts.

Images from Deltas past in the exhibit A Delta Self Portrait: Photographs of Delta by Deltans are on sale at the Delta Museum and Archives. Delta Museum and Archives photo

Picture perfect giftMuseum offers a look back in time with framed photos

A bit of Deltas photographic history could be under the Christmas tree for a lucky few this year.

The Delta Museum and Archives has delved into its collection of 20,000 images and come up with 56 that have been framed and put on display at a special exhibition called A Delta Self Portrait: Photographs of Delta by Deltans.

The project started several months ago with curator Jor-dana Kerry who sorted through the collection and selected a few, said the museums Cindy Sale.

Then it was up to the rest of the staff to take a look and choose some of their favou-rites, she said.

The end result has been hanging on the museums walls since Oct. 23 and will be up for viewing until Dec. 17.

Those wanting a piece of local photographic history can come in and take a look, choose their favourite and have it wrapped and ready in time

for gift giving time. The images range from four

by seven inch reproductions of vintage record covers to a whopping 30 by 24 inch land-scape of South Delta looking northwards.

Thats called One potato, two potato, because it looks out from Tsawwassen over the potato fields from 1946, Sale said.

Prices range from $15 to $100. Those pictures purchased will be taken down from the exhibi-tion once it ends, wrapped and ready for pick up.

Well hold it and hide it for you, said Sale who encour-ages the public to come into the museum and get a look at whats available.

These pictures tell the story of Deltas history in wonderful ways, she said.

The Delta Museum is locat-ed at 4858 Delta Street, in the heart of Ladner Village. Call 604-946-9322 for more infor-mation.
