(cont’d) The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them. They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them. The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying:

“Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is the he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.”

And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, “Who is this?” And the crowds replied, “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Reading 1 Is 50:4–7 The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning a er morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spi ng.

The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.

Responsorial Psalm, Ps 22:8–9, 17–18, 19–20, 23–24 R. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

Reading 2 Phil 2:6–11 Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not re-gard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emp ed himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled him-self, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Gospel Mt 26:14 — 27:66

HOSANNA! “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the high-est” (Ma hew 21:9). With these words the Church en-ters the holiest of weeks, commemora ng the passion, death, and resurrec on of Christ. When the people of Jerusalem cried out with their “hosannas,” they were using an ancient Hebrew shout of acclama on that meant “Pray, save us.” The king to whom they were shou ng eventually would save them, but in a way that would be far from what they expected. Salva on would come from the wood of the cross as Jesus hung there to bring freedom from sin and life through death, opening the gates of heaven for all who put their faith and trust in him. Gospel Mt 21:1–11 When Jesus and the disciples drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. Un e them and bring them here to me. And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, ‘The master has need of them.’ Then he will send them at once.” This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled:

Say to daughter Zion, “Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.”

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

The journey of Lent brings us to an encounter with the cross. During Lent, we have been led more deeply into ques ons at the heart of our faith: Who is God? And who are we, the Church? The Gospel of Ma hew indicates that, in the crucifixion, God’s true nature is most fully revealed in Jesus. In Jesus, God is the self-emptying One, who embraces humili-ty and suffers rejec on, as Paul tells the Philippians. God’s power is redefined, present not in coercion and violence, but in Jesus’ unbounded love. We the Church can learn who we are, the followers of the Crucified One, when we bear crosses that offer life and hope to the world. We more fully become the Church when we empty ourselves by sharing in others’ sufferings, rejec ng violence, and taking risks for jus ce and reconcilia on. Like Jesus, we may reveal God’s power as com-passion and mercy. ENDURING HOPE

Today’s passage from Isaiah presents us with a com-mon human dilemma: what do we do with our suffering? The speaker describes himself as God’s faithful servant, who suffers bea ngs and mockery. We can’t be sure who the speaker is, but we can see his extraordinary response. He chooses not to fight back, not to respond to violence with violence. He chooses to endure with hope that God, in God’s own way, will deliver and vindicate him. Chris ans later saw this passage as a poignant descrip on of Jesus’ suffering in his passion.

We all have many experiences of tragic or unde-served suffering. We might desire to run from our pain, or to

inflict suffering upon others, or to live in despair. In faith, we are invited to share in the suffering of Jesus, sharing also with all who suffer similarly. We can place our wounds in God’s hands. We may live in enduring hope that Christ is indeed present and accompanies us in our pain. In God’s own way, our suffering may be transformed, so to serve God’s purpos-es. A NEW KINGDOM

The Gospel of Ma hew, using various symbols from scripture, presents Jesus as the true and victorious king who begins a new kingdom. A er his royal entrance into Jerusa-lem, Jesus ascends his scandalous and paradoxical throne, the cross. The cross reveals the nature of his kingdom, based on God’s forgiveness and sacrificial love. Evil forces thrive when violence s rs even more violence. By accep ng his suffering and offering forgiveness, Jesus broke the primary cycle of violence. The Gospels proclaim that the powers of evil, though con nuing their effects today, were decisively defeated on the cross.

The resurrec on of Jesus launches the reign of God, which will be fully complete upon Jesus’ return. We are now offered a new path for being human by which, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we may partner with God to create new cycles of life and hope. PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL April 5, 2020 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Grateful for the great sacrifice that Jesus Christ has made on our behalf, we offer to God our prayers for all God’s people in the world.

For our Church, God’s holy people, as we follow the way of the cross in our own lives, making sacrifices as necessary for the sake of those in the world around us, let us pray to the Lord. For all na ons to set aside their enmity and strife and learn to live in the peace of God’s kingdom, helping one another throughout the global pandem-ic and in the days a erward, let us pray to the Lord. For those who will be bap zed this Easter season, especially those among us, N., N., and N., and for all who will be received into the Church, let us pray to the Lord. For all who worship here or at home today and next weekend, that our faith may be nourished and deep-ened by our pondering of these sacred mysteries, let us pray to the Lord. For all those who are caught up in our criminal jus-

ce and court systems, and for all who work with them, let us pray to the Lord. For all who have died: we commend them to your tender mercy, confident that nothing, not even death, will separate us from your love, we pray to the Lord. For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our inten ons spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord.

Merciful God, in your great love for us you allowed your Son Jesus Christ to make the ul mate sacrifice. Grant that we may acknowledge him and emulate him in our own lives for the sake of the rest of the world, and hear these prayers which we make in his name, who is our Lord for ever and ever. HOLY WEEK AND THE PASCHAL TRIDUUM Sunday, March 28 - Sunday, April 4, 2010 “The days of Jesus’ life-giving death and glorious resur-rec on are approaching, the hour he triumphed over Satan’s pride, the me we celebrate the great event of our redemp on” (Preface of the Lord’s Passion II, Sacra-mentary). Thus the Church begins the one week of the year that we formally designate as “Holy.” Simple rituals can link the domes c church to parish church and Church universal. Enthrone Sunday’s palms where you pray, behind the family crucifix, even as part of front door decora ons: “Christ reigns here,” they proclaim; “all are welcome!” During the first three days of Holy Week, ready Easter clothes, prepare festal foods, clean the house, beau fy the yard. Late Holy Thursday a er-noon, share Lent’s final meal before the Lord’s Supper Mass. Pitcher, bowl, and towel make a fi ng center-piece; perhaps conclude the meal by washing each oth-er’s feet. On Good Friday, observe the paschal fast from food—from TV and computer, too! Then come to Holy Saturday’s Vigil with mind clear, stomach empty, and heart full of “holy an cipa on” that bursts into living flame when the new fire is kindled. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. FIVE SIMPLE WAYS TO CELEBRATE HOLY WEEK AT HOME Create a simple prayer space in your home, and gather there to pray during the week.

Palm Sunday: At your regular Mass me, read the first Palm Sunday Gospel (Mt 21:1–11) and meditate on or discuss what Jesus might be thinking as he enters Jerusalem for the last

me. Holy Thursday: Bake bread for sharing at dinner; make a ritual of stripping the dinner table of all cloths and decora ons a er dinner. Good Friday: Pray the Sta ons of the Cross at 3 p.m. Holy Saturday: In the morning, read Psalm 64 and break your Good Friday fast solemnly with a simple meal. Easter Sunday: Dress up the dinner table again. Include can-dles and crosses, so that the candy baskets aren’t the only fes-

ve items present. Sing Alleluia and read the Easter Gospel (Ma hew 28:1-10) with solemnity and joy.

Give me understanding WHAT IS SPIRITUAL COMMUNION? St. Thomas Aquinas described spiritual communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the most holy sacrament and lovingly embrace him” at a me or in circumstances when we cannot receive him in sacramental Communion.” St. Teresa of Jesus wrote: “When you do not receive communion and you do not a end Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most benefi-cial prac ce; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you” [The Way of Perfec on, Ch. 35.]. The Basic Elements of an Act of Spiritual Communion 1. Make an act of faith. The key here is to express to the Lord your faith in his merciful love and his real presence in the Eucharist. 2. Make an act of love. O Lord God, I love you above all things. 3. Express your desire to receive him. 4. Invite Jesus to come into your heart spiritually. No par cular prayer or formulary is required, though there are acts of spiritual communion in Catholic prayer books to help focus a proper inten on. Below is a tradi onal prayer of spiritual communion a ributed to St. Alphonsus Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire you with all my heart. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already in my heart and unite myself to you completely. Please do not let me ever by separated from you. Amen.

United in Prayer

Here is Pope Francis’ prayer of entrustment,

concluding with the most ancient recorded

prayer to Our Lady:

O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey

as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross

were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need,

and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that,

as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return

after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love,

to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and

to do what Jesus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Himself,

and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross,

to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection,

O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas –

we who are put to the test –

and deliver us from every danger,

O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Amen.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
