LCSC is the smart choice.

Established in Lewiston, Idaho in 1893, Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC) is still the smart choice for discerning students. In addition to other careers, our graduates secure satisfying and financially rewarding jobs as teachers, nurses, business leaders, social workers, criminal justice professionals, welders, diesel mechanics, legal assistants,

dental hygienists, and radiology technicians. Since we began tracking them in 2007, nearly 90% of our graduates in natural sciences and mathematics who apply have been accepted into medical schools, dental schools, and other graduate programs throughout the United States.

Whereas state money and tuition dollars have traditionally fully funded educational opportunities for our students, that is emphatically no longer the case. Today these dollars are simply too few, too scarce, or altogether missing.

To build the future for our students, we must turn to our stakeholders in the private sector — to our alumni, to our friends, to our business partners, to our foundations, and to our corporate allies.

For that reason, LCSC and the LCSC Foundation introduce Campaign LCSC: Celebrating the Past, Creating the Future. This campaign spotlights students, faculty, academic programs and the campus environment.

Please, come think with us.

Read our plans for Campaign LCSC: Celebrating the Past, Creating the Future. And then join the campaign to help us to secure that future.

Students

ScholarshipsStudents are the heart and soul of Lewis-Clark State College. They are everywhere: on campus, online, at local businesses, behind masks holding surgical instruments, in front of computer screens purchasing commodities, teaching children, and shaking hands in the community, in the state and around the world.

Our students are all ages and from all walks of life. To describe them is to share their stories.

Lewis-Clark State College Students are• traditional students from hardworking families • single dads who juggle parenting, work, and classes• middle-aged women ready for something completely different or finally, after raising a

family, being able to secure their college degree or learn a trade• retired physicians taking a course every semester• transfer students from community colleges throughout the region• struggling, displaced workers vying for another chance at a career• proud GED certificate-holders ready to take on the challenge of furthering their educations• cross-generational family members walking across the stage at commencement to receive

their diplomas — mother and daughter — on the same day

Just what is LCSC doing to help?

We are providing scholarships.

Creating a scholarship for a student is, indeed, one of the soundest investments you can make. Scholarship dollars pay the direct costs of a student’s college education. In fact, in many cases a scholarship is the deciding factor in determining whether or not a student can attend college. Earning a college degree forges a path to the future that can change everything.

“When I began at LCSC I had to work over 20 hours a week to qualify for state

childcare assistance. Now that I receive tuition assistance through the college, I have

not had to work and expose my family to so much stress. The scholarships I received

have enabled me to concentrate on my school work without taking me away from

my children… I’ve been pleased with three semesters of solid A’s (and one B+)! I

am so thankful to have been afforded an opportunity to secure my higher education

degree and proud to be achieving so much.”

Enrichment OpportunitiesEnrichment activities make classroom learning come alive in ways nothing else can. Sitting at a desk reading about a place, for example, is a far different experience than taking an actual trip to the same physical destination where it is possible to literally step into another culture and another geographical setting. Such activities bring learning to life and students to a life of learning.

A focused effort to engage students in culturally diverse settings is especially crucial to our students who may never have ventured far from home. That’s one reason we offer college-sponsored experiences both outside the classroom and even outside the country. For instance, students can participate in the semester-long Hells Canyon Institute with its weeklong field school in nearby Hells Canyon, the deepest gorge on the North American continent. Our students can also travel to conferences, special seminars, academic competitions, and workshops. Some choose to study for a year abroad. We provide a full complement of choices for our students.

Needless to say, however, these activities create financial challenges.

We invite you to help make cultural learning possible outside the classroom through a gift to one of LCSC’s many student enrichment activities.

Athletic ExcellenceWe promote it. We believe it. We exemplify it. Lewis-Clark State College boasts national rankings in every team sport offered on campus. Our teams regularly qualify for national tournaments, and we offer everything from volleyball, basketball, golf, tennis, and cross-country to our top-ranked NAIA baseball team.

But athletic excellence comes with a price: LCSC athletes need and deserve their own endowment.

“As Nez Perce Tribal members, we have a unique opportunity to get a high quality

education right here in our own community. My family has taken full advantage of

this situation and the results have been amazing — and contagious! After my mother,

grandmother, aunt, cousin, and I all attended LCSC together, other family members

also returned to get their GEDs and enroll in A.A. and B.S. programs.”

Students / Faculty

Endowed Chair for a Distinguished ProfessorGreat teachers define great colleges and universities. Lewis-Clark State College is no exception.

LCSC must continue to focus on its strength as a college distinguished by superior teaching. It takes money to hire and retain the caliber of faculty required to teach in today’s academic environment. Because state resources are limited, private support for teaching excellence is essential to our future.

An Endowed Chair or Distinguished Professorship would provide LCSC the opportunity to retain or even hire seasoned scholars with superior knowledge and teaching ability. It would be particularly helpful in Nursing and Health Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Teacher Education, or Social Sciences.

A gift to establish endowed chairs and distinguished professorships will ensure that LCSC will continue to be able to retain and hire faculty with the credentials and abilities needed to teach the students of today and tomorrow.

Faculty Excellence Award EndowmentMerit. Businesses and industries regularly use merit raises and bonuses to recognize and reward employees who contribute to the success of their organizations. The endowed Faculty Excellence Award fund will provide similar recognition for our faculty members.

LCSC -Coeur d’Alene

Lewis-Clark State College-Coeur d’Alene (LC-CdA)

A unique partnership between Lewis-Clark State College, North Idaho College, and the University of Idaho provides exceptional educational opportunities for students to earn a two-year degree, a four-year degree, and even an advanced degree without leaving the Coeur d’Alene region. With LC-CdA enrollment nearing 500 students, we believe the time has come to provide a series of scholarships specifically for those students.

Please join with us as we endeavor to provide four year educational opportunities for more students in Coeur d’Alene and northern Idaho.

Coeur d’Alene by the numbers: • 850 students have graduated from LCSC-Coeur d’Alene in the past decade• 45 academic courses are offered on average each semester at LCSC-Coeur d’Alene• 36 is the average age of LCSC-Coeur d’Alene students• 7 academic programs contribute to the economic vitality of Idaho’s five northern counties:

Business, RN-to-BSN program, Social Work, Justice Studies, Communication Arts, Pathways to Certification in Education (PACE,) and four year degrees in the applied arts

• 4 is the number of institutions with which LCSC collaborates to serve Idaho’s Panhandle

LCSC-Coeur d’Alene is the only institution in Region I that offers bachelor of applied science degree opportunities to professional-technical associate degree graduates.

Library Libraries are the heart of every campus. The LCSC Library is the place where students receive help from a librarian, find a quiet study space, or work with a group in a study room. Information resources such as print and e-books, full text journal databases and media are available to all students both on and off campus. Please contribute to the LCSC Library Fund to ensure that students have the library resources, vital technology, and facilities needed for their academic success.

Community Programs

Center for Arts & HistoryThe Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History provides LCSC students and the general public with unique opportunities for cultural enrichment, reflection, and education through the presentation of visual, historic, and literary arts.

Your support for our programs will help us sustain the place of the arts in the lives of our students and allow us to continue to develop audiences in underserved populations.

Distance LearningFor reasons of geography, employment, or family obligations, it is often impossible for people to relocate to Lewiston, Coeur d’Alene, or another college town to receive a traditional college education. For such citizens in Idaho and elsewhere, LCSC’s popular online courses make a college degree possible.

Our Distance Learning curriculum includes associate and bachelor degree programs in areas such as business, nursing, teacher certification, early childhood development, and web development. All of our classes employ the latest learning technologies to create effective learning that is also cost-efficient. In fact, our Pathways for Accelerated Certification and Endorsement (PACE) program received a national “Program of Excellence Award” for helping classroom assistants earn their teaching credential for both elementary and secondary levels.

Not every class at LCSC is available online, but our Distance Learning Program offers a surprising number of them — including many classes which fulfill core requirements.

Five years ago, students filled 3,947 seats in LCSC online courses. Since then, the number of filled seats has increased by over 53% to a total 6,054. In addition, enrollments in our blended courses — classes that combine online instruction and face-to-face classroom teaching — grew nearly five times from 882 in 2008 to 4,292 in 2012. Funding from an endowment for Distance Learning will support infrastructure and the personnel our Distance Learning programs need to continue making a college education possible for students who might otherwise never have the opportunity to achieve one.

Continuing Education and Community EventsLCSC also plays a vital role as a college within a particular community by offering regional non-credit courses, a Kid’s College, a Speaker’s Bureau, a performing artists series, and other culturally rich opportunities, including Art Under the Elms, one of the largest outdoor festivals in Idaho. Please help us enrich the lives of children and adults with non-credit courses, distinctive services, and exceptional community programs.

Campus Environment

New Home for the Business Division In 2011, the Idaho Division of Public Works allocated $200,000 from the FY2012 Permanent Building Fund to begin design work to upgrade the Fine Arts Building. An architect (Castellaw Kom Architects) has been selected, and planning for the project is now underway. The Fine Arts Building began as a men’s dormitory when the building was constructed in 1912. In later years, the facility became the “Science Building” and, more recently, has supported Nursing and Health Science programs and other users. The current project ($1.9 Million in total funds) will upgrade antiquated space and provide modern classrooms and offices in this classic three-story building to serve as the new home for the Business Division. Private funding of $____ is needed to complete this project.

Tennis Center ImprovementsHundreds of people access the Tennis Center every year. As the only four-court indoor facility in the area, our Tennis Center provides year-round services to LCSC students, faculty, staff and members of the community. Built more than 30 years ago, the facility is in need of repairs.

A gift to the Tennis Center will support the on-going repairs and upgrades to the existing facility.

Sacajawea Arduous Journey Bronze SculptureStanding over 9 feet tall, this larger-than-life bronze sculpture memorializes Sacajawea, the healer and the peacemaker who joined Lewis and Clark along the trail. Located near the entrance of Sacajawea Hall, the college’s new Nursing & Health Sciences building, artist Carol Grende’s bronze masterpiece is still in need of patrons.

And Finally…

President’s Excellence Fund EndowmentEstablished in honor of former president Dene Kay Thomas, this fund celebrates visionary leadership, strong role models, and the legacy of success.

A President’s Excellence Fund demonstrates an institution’s commitment to advancement by acknowledging the strength of its leader and the need for unique projects to be funded when it means building for the future. We invite you to help build this fund as an endowment so that LCSC presidents will always have discretionary power to help students, faculty, and the community when they need it most.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for reading Campaign LCSC: Celebrating the Past, Creating the Future.

At LCSC, students are our number one priority. We remain committed to keeping our class sizes small and our curriculum challenging and to continuing our proud heritage as Idaho’s only public four-year college with classroom teaching as its core mission.

We understand that many of our students and their families may find it difficult to afford the quality education that is available at LCSC. That is why scholarships are the primary focus of this campaign. However, it goes without saying that highly qualified faculty members are the critical element in every successful academic program and LCSC is no exception. The newly established faculty endowments will help LCSC hire and retain the best faculty members to meet the needs of our students. Last but not least, a functional and welcoming campus environment provides the atmosphere critical to our students’ success. Although our campaign building projects are basic — especially the new home for the business division and the upgrades to the tennis center — they will nevertheless substantially enhance the learning and living environments for our students. Campaign LCSC: Celebrating the Past, Creating the Future is an exciting and challenging undertaking that I feel personally privileged to lead. So please join with me and all LCSC donors and make your campaign gift today. Let’s do it all — and let’s do it now.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

J. Anthony FernándezPresident
