ATITJERE NEW TOILETS LIGHT UP
The Atitjere basketball court toilets were vandalised in early 2017 rendering them unusable
The Atitjere Local Authority funded a project to repair and renovate the toilet block That project is now complete with the added benefit of motion activated solar lights that have been installed to each toilet by the Atitjere Works team
The renovation of the toilets started with the installation of stainless steel toilet bowls and cisterns the repair and replacement of broken doors and the replacement of the fibreglass skylights with Colourbond steel sheeting which was completed mid-year
Last month the solar lights were installed to compensate for the loss of the skylights as well as making the toilets more user friendly for night use when basketball is popular especially in the hotter months

ATITJERE AIRSTRIP TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO RAIN
Widespread rain on 29 January and continuing good quality rain that night in Atitjere was good news for the dry community It has also prompted an Unscheduled Airstrip Inspection by the Central Desert Regional Council The rain
made the runway and taxiway surface soft and unsafe for aircraft to use On the morning of 30 January the Atitjere Council Office requested that a NOTAM (Notice) be issued and the Atitjere Airstrip be closed to all aircraft Part of this procedure is to install a large white cross in the signal area next to the windsock This white cross is clearly visible from the air and notifies all passing aircraft that the airstrip is closed to all traffic
After the rain cleared the airstrip dried up and reopened on 4 February

PAINTING SHAPED THE CENTRAL DESERT REGIONAL COUNCIL LOGO
The Central Desert Regional Council proudly flies their own flag alongside the Australian Northern Territory and Aboriginal flags in front of their Bagot Street offices The flag shows their logo which was created in March 2008 ahead of the now
Council becoming a Shire on 1 July 2008 formed by the amalgamation of six smaller local government bodiesThe logo was developed using a story told in an artwork painted by Judith Hargraves of Yuendumu Her painting tells the
story of the four Shire wards and their elected members coming together to meet as the then new regional Shire CouncilldquoThe fact we could use the story told in Judithrsquos painting gives the Central Desert Shire logo real meaning and relevancerdquo

A valiant comeback fell short in the teamrsquos second round against Jetlove Down 16 at half time with no points on the board the Laramba team pulled out all the stops with a second-half comeback scoring seven consecutive points (six from the sharp shooting Simona Tilmouth) but Jetlove proved too good making tough shots down the stretch to hand the Laramba team a 21 ndash 7 loss
Bouncing back after their first two defeats the Laramba Ladeez displayed great resilience to win their final game against Groot Eylandt Simona Tilmouth scored a team-high 8 points consisting of four shots from beyond the arc (3-point shots were awarded 2 points throughout the tournament) to help seal the win and close the game 8 - 6
After achieving their first win and qualifying for the semi-finals the ladies were forced to forfeit due to illness The team represented the Laramba community with pride and thoroughly enjoyed meeting other players in the
competition Special mention must go to Simona Tilmouth who scored an incredible 9 shots from behind the three-
point line no easy feat

ATITJERE KEEPING AN EYE ON WATER USE
The Central Desert Regional Councilrsquos (CDRC) Atitjere works crew erected a new PowerWater Corporation (PWC) Water Usage Sign in October It has been located between the Council Office and the Atitjere Store to try and
capture everyonersquos attention Every month PWC send the community water usage data to CDRC and our Essential Services Officer updates the meter accordingly
ldquoThis is part of our role in protecting an extremely valuable resourcerdquo said Atitjere Community Services Coordinator Warren Kenney ldquoWith this sign the community will know the level of usage and we can work on reducing that level if neededrdquo he said
As of mid-December the sign is sitting on the high side of ldquoToo Muchrdquo heading toward ldquoExtremerdquo The calculation is based on total water out divided by population data from Australian Bureau of Statistics This data includes service providers such as nurses teachers and police
The CDRC Regional Plan 2018-22 has as one of its goals to ensure the regionrsquos communities are sustainable Goal 4 Objective 1 states All communities have clean and adequate water supplies by 2025 The CDRC Regional Plan is available on the website wwwcentraldesertntgovau

The large white cross signals the Atitjere airstrip is closed

TI TREE WOMENrsquoS TEAM IN GRAND FINAL OF SOUTHERN CUP BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
On Sunday 1 December at Alice Springs Basketball Stadium the Ti-Tree womenrsquos basketball team played a nail biting game in the grand
final of the Southern Cup Basketball Tournament against MacDonnell Shire Women Unfortunately they just missed out on the cup losing by three points
In the lead up on Saturday 23 November Ti-Tree hosted a basketball competition against Engawala with both menrsquos and womenrsquos teams playing to compete for a chance to compete in the Southern Cup
ldquoThe games were played in great spirits and it was a fantastic dayrdquo said Grace Barry Central Desert Regional Councilrsquos Youth Sport and Recreation Coordinator Anmatjere
The men played first and Engawala came away the winners In the womenrsquos game it was Ti-Tree who took home the win
The two winning teams then travelled to Alice Springs the following weekend along with teams from all over Central Australia to compete in the Southern Cup ndash a two day tournament held over the weekend The competition involved playing games of 5X5 (five a side) as well as 3X3 (three a side using half the court)
The Ti-Tree womenrsquos team had an excellent run winning four out of their five games They progressed all the way to the grand final where they played a nail biting game but sadly just missed out on the cup The Engawala men had a tougher run over the weekend but that didnrsquot stop them from giving their all and having fun
ldquoOverall both teams played an exceptional tournament and are looking forward to developing their skills for next yearrsquos tournamentrdquo said Barry
LARAMBA LADEEZ PLAY 3x3 BASKETBALL IN DARWIN
The National Basketball Leaguersquos 3times3 Big Hustle Northern Territory State Championships were held on Sunday 23 February with 120 players participating in
the event including the Laramba Ladeez This style of basketball pits three players on each team against each other
The Laramba Ladeez faced Cannons in the first open womenrsquos round The team went in to their first game filled with confidence having practiced their passing and shooting throughout the week in Laramba However the team suffered a 16 ndash 4 defeat in what was a frustrating display
Team captain Thalia Turner said she was pleased with her sidersquos effort before acknowledging that communication was an issue ldquoI think we started wellrdquo Turner said post-match ldquoWe scored first but stopped talking to each other once the other team started scoringrdquo

PAINTING SHAPED THE CENTRAL DESERT REGIONAL COUNCIL LOGO
The Central Desert Regional Council proudly flies their own flag alongside the Australian Northern Territory and Aboriginal flags in front of their Bagot Street offices The flag shows their logo which was created in March 2008 ahead of the now
Council becoming a Shire on 1 July 2008 formed by the amalgamation of six smaller local government bodiesThe logo was developed using a story told in an artwork painted by Judith Hargraves of Yuendumu Her painting tells the
story of the four Shire wards and their elected members coming together to meet as the then new regional Shire CouncilldquoThe fact we could use the story told in Judithrsquos painting gives the Central Desert Shire logo real meaning and relevancerdquo
said the then Central Desert Shire CEO Rowan Foley at the timeThe Central Desert Shire became the Central Desert Regional Council on 1 January 2014 but still retains the original logo
and strategy two ways one outcomeCurrent Council CEO Diane Hood said ldquoour logo and strategy two ways one outcome have stood the test of time and
remain relevant and meaningful for our Councilrdquo
