Home & Community care Disability*Ageing

Individual Support is a course designed for those wanting to care for people that needs assistance. To be an individual support worker, you must possess a keen sense of compassion and personal empathy combined with strong communication skills as these will allow you to make that vital connection with those you will be taking care of. Our course has been designed to suit 3 different streams of Individual support;

Course Duration: 8 - 12 months

Full-time:Delivery & Assessment

• 30 face-to-face sessions - 2 x 4 hour class per week

Part-time:Delivery & Assessment

• 30 face-to-face sessions - 1 x 4 hour class per week

Duration, Delivery & Assessment

For this course, we offer the option of studying part-time or full time. This gives you the option to decide what will best fit in with your current schedule.

Assessments include: written & oral questions, projects & observations of skills both in a simulated environment and in the workplace.

Work Placement

This course requires you to undertake 150 hours of work placement, they are generally early morning starts, with some possibility of afternoon shifts, so students will need to have flexible availability in order to undertake placement and their own mode of transport to get to and from shifts within a facility.

Where we can, MCFE will help source work placement venues for students to complete their place-ment hours at, or studetns can sourse this themselves.

Fees

If you are eligible, you may be able to receive Skills First Government Funding to cover the cost of your training meaning you will only pay the amount in the ‘funded fees’ & ‘material fees’ column in the table below, and the Victorian Government will cover the rest of the cost. If you are not eligible for Government funding, the cost of the course is listed in the ‘Full Fee Student’ column.

What is Government Funding also known as the “Skills First Program”? You may be eligible for a government subsidised place. This is called the Skills First Program. If you are eligible, the government will contribute to the cost of your training. To check your individual eligibility or if you want further course information call/email the office. There are limitations to using Victorian government funding, you need to make sure you are using your funding for the right course, as it may affect your access to future government funding. You must be eligible to access this. Please refer to our student fees table on our website to view the official statement of fees and charges.

Location

We do have CBD campuses, but we also consider where majority of the students have to travel from. We try to group people from the same location together and hire out venues that are closer to home making it easier for you to travel to. The exact location of the classes will be confirmed once you talk to a representative of MCFE.

Entry Requirements

• If you wish to apply for government funding, then you will need to meet the eligibility criteria. • Must have access to a computer to complete your studies • In order to undertake practical placement some employers may wish for students to hold their Food Handlers certificates and a current Police Check. MCFE can assist in providing these, however they will be at an additional cost

Pathways

On completion of this qualification, you may wish to specialise in one stream or another with Certificate IV in Ageing Support, Certificate IV in Disability, or Diploma/Bachelor of Nursing are also options available to students. MCFE does not currently offer these courses as part of our scope however we can recommend other providers.

Course Content

To be eligible for the award of the qualification, learners must successfully complete 7 core units and 6 elective units.

Module 1

The Industry

We will walk you through caring in a residential andhome care environment, discuss industry standardsas well as laws and regulations which will assist you

to be aware of what you can and can’t do in theworkplace within the scope of your role.

We will also discuss duty of care and changes that occur with ageing.

Module 2

Communication & Diversity

How to best communicate with clients and col-leagues and strategies to overcome any difficulties. Discuss different cultures and stereotypes as well as

reflecting on our own perspectives.

Course Modules

There are 13 modules in this course, including optional units.

Module 3

Providing Care

Completing the day-to-day activities you willundertake when working as a personal care atten-dant including the basics of body hygiene, groom-ing and oral health, how to determine and provide

support needs whilst supporting the client’s physical, social and emotional wellbeing, maximise client’s

participation in their daily activities.

Module 4

Working Safely

Learn correct manual handling techniques and how to transfer clients using hoists, wheelchairs and beds in a safe way. We will cover using personal protective

equipment and infection control, reviewing howimportant policy and procedure is.

Module 5

Practical Skills

You will have several sessions to practice skillsbefore commencing practical placement. This willinclude using manual handling equipment such as

hoists, hi-lo beds and wheelchairs in a safe way.Role plays will cover workplace scenarios for you

to practice and confirm workplace skills.

Module 6

First Aid

After these sessions you will be able to providebasic first aid and CPR in any situation whether it be

a child, adult or elderly person and will also knowhow to complete an incident report. This is the

equivalent of Level 2 First Aid.

Module 7

Healthy Bodies

Learn about each body systems and how theyrelate to each other as well as the correct health

terminology for each system. We will show youhow to recognise and promote ways to supporthealthy functioning of the body including active

and passive physical activity.

Module 8

Dementia

You will learn about different types of dementia & how this can impact on a client’s behaviour, how to

provide support, what communication strategies arebest applied & how identify potential triggers for

behaviours of concern. Learn strategies to minimisethe impact of behaviours on the person and others.We also discuss ways for you to look after yourself

& seek support if required.

Module 9

Empowering Clients

Develop relationships that promote client’s rightsincluding the right to choose and how to

demonstrate respect for their social, cultural andspiritual differences. You will understand the

potential risks associated with ageing and how topromote health and reablement of older people.

Module 11

Carers & Families

We will discuss working with primary carers andfamilies of your client and how to include them as

part of the support team. We’ll also show you how tomonitor a carer’s rights, health and well being and

respond to any changes in the care relationship.

Module 12

Disability

What is a disability, the different types of disabilities,understanding the social model of disability and

positive lifestyle strategies. We also look at ways tominimise behaviours of concern and train you to

recognise and consider why the behaviours of concern occurred and how to positively

support the client.

Module 13

Skills & Inclusion

We will cover skills assessment for people with adisability and how to best observe and document aperson’s competencies. You will learn how to assistwith ongoing development of skills, using positive

approaches and strategies to encourage learningopportunities, as well as identifying interests and for

clients to participate in the community.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) & Credit Transfer (CT)

You can ask for your relevant existing skills, qualifications and experiences to be assessed and taken into account when your level of competency is being evaluated. There will be a cost associated, refer to the statement of fees and charges. If you have previously completed a unit with the same code as your new course you will be eligible for a credit transfer and you will not have to repeat that unit. There is no cost associated with this process, but you will need to complete a credit transfer application.

During the call back stage, you will be offered the opportunity to attend our information session where you will meet the trainer.

During the information session, a MCFE member will go through the training program, funding options and course outcomes. You will complete a pre-training review and the trainer will answer any questions you may have.

If there is no information session scheduled for your course, we will keep your details and let you know ASAP when the next one is.

An option to enroll after the information session will be available. Please bring ID to this session (Medicare card + Driver’s License or passport)

An email will be sent to you with our course brochure attached for you to look over and you will receive a call by a representative of MCFE to chat with you about the course.

Resources and Materials

Students need access to the internet to complete this qualification, as there will be quizzes to be completed online. Students will be provided with text books - The Individual Support Worker: Ageing, Disability, Home and Community

Support Services

If you need support with progress throughout your course or other personal issues, we have a student services officer who can help or direct you to the most appropriate external service. Your trainer will also be available every session to cover additional support if required.
