    The Chalice

CONNECTIONA publication of First Christian Church of Edmond, OK

What True Love MeansBy Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister

    Vol. 3 No. 5 February 17, 2011

FCCs Outreach Ministry team invites you to join us for

an intergenerational mission trip during spring break. We

will travel to the Inman Christian Center in San Antonio,

    Texas, March 12-16.

Inman Christian Center is a neighborhood-based

community center offering childcare for infants, pre-school

and school age children. Recreation and enrichment

activities for children and youth ages 6-13 are also offered.Inman provides short term social services, information and referral and infant supplies.

Inman Christian Center also sponsors six apartment complexes in San Antonio for low-

income elderly and for adults with physical and/or mental disabilities.

This trip is intergenerational - anyone can attend, but children must be

    accompanied by an adult.

    As we

    celebrate

    Valentines

    Day this

    week, Iwant to

    remind

    you of

    what true

    love really

    means. Our scripture on Sunday

included the words from Jesus, No one

has greater love than to give up ones life

    for ones friends. (John 15:13)

Amidst all of the corny, funny and

even the emotional Valentines Day cards

we pass around, remember what thatkind of love is about. Gods love extends

to us in life-changing ways. And it is a

    love that sacrifices all.

I hope that you had the chance to

express to those most important to you

how much they mean to you. To tell them

how much you love them and share their

importance in your life. Too often we

neglect those we are closest to, forgettin

to verbalize and demonstrate our love.

    Remember that love conquers all.

As South African Archbishop DesmondTutu once said, Love, compassion,

    gentleness, even when sometimes they

seem to have a rough ride, in the end

    they prevail. Amen.

Now Im off to tell my family how

important they are to me. Hope youll d

    the same.

Nothing to do for Spring Break?

Disciples will gather for the 2011 General

Learning Tracks explore one of three topicsin depth from a variety of angles over twodays for a total of about five hours. Theseintensive sessions offer participants the op-

portunity to learn from specialists and from

each other.Who will lead the transformation?

In times of change, leaders have a special cand challenge to coax communities into neplaces, sometimes frightening places, whe

God is about to do a new thing.

What seeks to be born among us?As Christians experience the decline of insti

tional/organized church, a newministry is emerging full of new possibili-

ties - especially for Disciples. How might thEmergent Church movement empower us

    mission and ministry?

MISSIONAL Ministry to Youth and ChildreHow do we seek to bare, or bear, God to t

youth and children in your community?

A Great Place to Learn and Grow!

Learning to Share is ToughAs children we begin by taking turns with things in

limited supply like crayons or skateboards, experien

the immediate satisfaction of playing with someone

else, and start to understand that sharing strengthenfriendships. Teenagers experience the fun of shared

jokes and the healing comfort of sharing broken he

As adults, we seek organizations that share our visio

and perhaps someone to share our lives with. Over time, we come to know that sharing is bedrock to being fully human, and it brings incredible joy

On Sunday, February 20 we will be invited to share with people in aching need through the Week of Compassion Offering. By sharing ourresources, combined with offerings from thousands of other congregations in eight denominations across the United States, we:

lbuild homes, schools, medical clinics, and clean water and sewage facilities in villages

    devastated by earthquakes, floods, and poverty;

lbring safety, shelter, and food to refugees

lnurture self-sufficiency through health care, education, job training, and tools

Remarkably, we benefit when we share! Week of Compassion donors say:

lGiving just feeds my soul! This is what life is aboutnot collecting things, but helping people.

lGiving helps me appreciate what I have.

l As I see Week of Compassion meet needs, I am reminded how God takes care of me.

Sharing because we have felt Gods love invites God even more fully into our lives, which renews and transforms us. Those who abide in love abid

n God, and God abides in them. (I John 4:16) As we reach out in love, we open the way for God to reach more deeply into us. Sharing will joyfu

ransform you as you help transform the world. Week of Compassion: sharing resources, changing lives, bringing joy!
