WINTER 2018/19
BLACK HISTORY MONTHThe Jackson District Library invites you to celebrate
Black History Month this February. Pg. 3
HAPPY HOLIDAYSFrom reindeer visits to solstice storytimes,
we have you covered. Pg. 4-6
Working on a big school project? MeL has your back. Researching a new product to purchase? MeL has you covered. Need to know the torque specifications on that 1984 Toyota Celica Supra? MeL to the rescue.
Michigan eLibrary updated its online resource libraries (and its logo) this October.
For the entire life of MeL, its emphasis has been to market broadly to the library community and all 9+ million residents in the State of Michigan. Now, the organization is positioning
itself to concentrate on tools, resources, and support specifically for the library and education communities.
Check out the changes today under the "Research" link on JDL's website: www.myjdl.com/research.
JDL ACCEPTING CREDIT CARDSThe Jackson District Library will
soon accept credit and debit cards to pay accrued library fines of $1 or more. JDL staff have worked for months on the change, expected to roll out to all 13 branches by the end of the year. Patrons can currently pay their fines with a card online.
"People have mentioned to us for a while that they expect to be able to pay their fines in person with a credit or debit card," Marketing & Communications Manager Will Forgrave said. "We've worked diligently to make this request a reality, and we expect the feature
to be fully operational at all our locations by 2019."
Currently, staff are working to install the hardware necessary at all 13 of the Jackson District Library branches. Patrons can now pay fines online with a debit or credit card by going to their account information at www.myjdl.com.
"From there, patrons can access their account by selecting the 'My Account' link at the top of the page," Technology Manager Andy Lane said. "After inputting their library card barcode number and PIN number, they'll be able to pay online."

LACK HISTORY MONTHB
Kevin Collins (at left) and his Kuungana African Drum and Dance Company of Flint, MI, will headline this year's Black History Month finale. The concert is scheduled for 12 PM SATURDAY, FEB. 23, at the MEIJER BRANCH.
The group's concert, featuring energetic dance moves and the vibrant and rhythmic sounds of African drums, will weave together the excitement of literacy and African American culture. Admission to the event is free of charge and open to all ages.
The Jackson District Library is proud to celebrate and promote Black History Month this February 2019 with the theme BLACK MIGRATIONS - selected annually by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
Black Migrations emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities. While inclusive of earlier centuries, this year's theme focuses especially on the twentieth century through today.
As part of Black History Month, the library and the Jackson Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will host the first ever African American Read-In Chain in Jackson County. This nationally celebrated event highlights and promotes the works of African American authors and their contributions to the world of literacy.
People are urged to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month this February. Hosting an event can be as simple as bringing together friends to share a book or as elaborate as arranging public readings featuring selections from African American writers.
This year, Jackson County will join the “chain” of more than 6 million participants across the country, as the library and the NAACP kick-off the event this February. While we prepare, we invite you to visit all of our library branches to view our displays and checkout the many materials we have on African American culture.
Details regarding Black History Month events are still underway. For more information, visit www.myjdl.com.
