SIMPLY CHARLOTTEIn referring to the 49ers athletic program, simply use “Charlotte” or “Charlotte 49ers”. The university remains UNC Charlotte, but for athletic purposes, please use Charlotte. For short references and/or abbreviations, use 49ers, CHA or CHAR.

WHY THE 49ERSCharlotte adopted the nickname “49ers” in honor of the impor-tance of the year, 1949. In 1946, The Charlotte Center of the Uni-versity of North Carolina (CCUNC) was established as a temporary institution designed to handle the influx of servicemen return-ing from the war. In 1949, community leaders, led by unofficial founder Bonnie Cone, successfully fought to make the school a permanent institution. Thanks to that can-do attitude and pio-neering spirit, and in honor the year 1949, the school’s athletic teams were nicknamed the 49ers (adopted in 1962).

GoldTies:While the 49ers nickname was brought about by the importance of the year 1949 and had nothing to do with the gold rush of 1849, it should be noted that the first gold discovered in America was found in the Charlotte area, less than 20 minutes from campus in 1799. Charlotte’s mascot, Norm the Niner, is a gold miner, by trade.

WILLHEALY’SUNIQUEPERSPECTIVE

Dancing, dunk cans, hugs, best friends, fans abound, kids all around. Sounds more like a fes-tival than a football practice.

Who does that? Will Healy does that.

The 49ers first-year football coach is already making an impact by turning some football ide-als on their heads.

Dancing at practice in encouraged, not consid-ered a lack of discipline. Celebrating success is expected, not considered showboating. Hugs after practice is a show of strength, not consid-ered a sign of weakness.

Call it the new wave of football coaching.

As first-year head coach Will Healy has said, time and again, its all about energy, enthusi-asm, passion and positivity.

The 34-year old coach has a different view of football. Perhaps a better one.

He hires friends to his coaching staff – not be-cause it’s best for his friends, but because it’s best for the program.

He welcomes fans to practices, because build-ing relationships is as important as winning games.

He brings his family to practice, to the office, to meetings because – well, family comes first.

He’s heard that the coaching lifestyle means sacrificing time with the family. He’s heard that best friends don’t make the best assistants. He understands that many believe more people at practice provides more distractions.

He’s heard all of that but prefers to look at it in a different way. All those negatives, he turns into positives. Which is his nature.

“When you have passion, energy and enthu-siasm about something and you add that to positivity, you don’t even realize how hard you’re working,” Healy explained. “I think the environment around what you’re doing is con-tagious and makes people want to be a part of it and also gives you some joy in the journey. You work 365 days for 12 guaranteed oppor-tunities and if you don’t enjoy the other 353 days then why are you doing it? Ultimately, the definition of fun is executing at a high level and winning football games but to get there, there’s a lot of work that goes into it and I be-lieve that those characteristics and attributes will help us be successful.”

So at practice, players rock, jump and holler. They dance and celebrate. They give each oth-er alley-oop passes for dunks after turnovers. They chase each other into the end zone after touchdowns.

They celebrate success.

#THROWBACKTHURSDAYCharlotte53#24Gardner-Webb51 This one - this Charlotte 49ers come-from-behind, 53-51 victory over 24th-ranked Gardner-Webb - this one -- you had to see to believe. Charlotte (4-2) was hosting its first ranked opponent at Jerry Richardson Stadium -- and the Runnin’ Bulldogs (4-2) were enjoying a 21-point lead heading into the 4th quarter. But from the moment the fourth quarter started, things changed. Dramatically. As much as the 49ers first-ever game over a month ago followed a storybook script, this was something else. Unscripted. Unplugged. Un-totally-believable. “It was just a really wild game,” said 49ers head coach Brad Lambert, whose enjoying his first year as a head coach. “It took years off my life.” Charlotte’s first-year program ran off 29 consecutive points in the 4th quarter to rally past a Gardner-Webb team that had defeated top 15 foes Richmond and Wofford and boasted a defense ranked fifth in the nation. Along the way they notched characteristic quick-hit touchdowns, came-up with characteristic turnovers, forced a safety, held firm when they needed it most and managed the twists and turns of a fourth quarter fraught with drama. Still, the game was not actually decided until GWU’s Lucas Beatty’s two-point conversion pass dropped unceremoniously to the turf with 31 seconds left. When sure-handed Mikel Hunter pulled in the ensuing onside kick, the 49ers had their hard-fought, keep-fighting celebration. “This was the most exciting game of football I’ve ever played,” said quarterback Matt John-son, who threw for 342 yards and five touchdowns. “It was an amazing day.” Trailing 45-24, safety Martay Mattox intercepted Beatty’s pass on the first play of the final frame to set the 49ers up at the Gardner-Webb 34. Charlotte’s Matt Johnson converted a fourth and four on a 9-yard pass to Hunter and capped the drive on five-yard strike to CJ Crawford on fourth-and goal. 45-31; 12:30 to play. After a defensive stop, Charlotte’s next 12-play drive stalled on Gardner-Webb’s 29, on fourth down, with 7:43 left. The 49ers defense again held, forcing a three-and-out. The snap on the punt sailed into the end zone where punter Jordan Day was downed by Alex Petzke for the safety. 45-33; 5:20 to play. Charlotte started its next drive on the 50-yard line after Mattox’s 20-yard kick return. Johnson worked the 49ers systematically into Bulldog territory on passes to Austin Duke, Alan Barnwell and Dmarjai Devine. From the 21, he hit Duke again, this time for a leaping catch in the end zone. The rally was alive. 45-40; 4:27 to play. Charlotte linebacker Mark Hogan stuffed receiver Deonte Swinton after a short gain. Nico Alcalde registered a sack and after Hogan batted down Beatty’s third-down pass, the Runnin’ Bull-dogs were punting again, from their own 13. With the ball at the GWU 48 and trailing by five, Charlotte was in position to take the lead. And it didn’t take long. Johnson hit freshman Trent Bostick for a 48-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the drive and the 49ers found themselves in front, 46-45 with 3:15 to play. “Coach (Jeff) Mullen tells us all the time to be at your best when your best is needed,” said Bostick. “Matt put it out there and if he puts it out there, then I’m going to go get it.” On the second play of Gardner-Webb’s next drive, the 49ers Caleb Clayton-Molby forced a fumble that Hogan cradled near midfield. Charlotte was now in position to stretch its lead. And it didn’t take long. Barnwell fought off tacklers, bouced outside, hit the sideline and found daylight for a 56-yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive and the 49ers were ahead 53-45; 2:19 to play. “I’ve been waiting for that all year,” Barnwell said of the breakaway TD run that is now the longest in school history. It was the Runnin’ Bulldogs turn to respond. After having their previous five drives of the quarter stifled in short order, Beatty marched the Bulldogs down the field. A 10-yard pass. A 22-yard pass. An 11-yard pass. A 14-yard pass. On third and five from the 10, the 49ers were called for roughing the passer to set GWU up at the 5 with a new set of downs. Juanne Blount scored on a one-yard run to make it 53-51 with 31 seconds left. Beatty’s two-point attempt under pressure was incomplete and once Charlotte recovered the onside kick, the improbable victory was in hand. “I was almost in tears,” said Duke, who had two touchdowns on the day. “This was a big state-ment for our program. Feeling like that is just so surreal. The guys went crazy in the locker room.” “What I admire about this football team is its preparation each week and they’ve done a re-ally nice job preparing Monday through Thursday about what’s coming on Saturday,” Lambert said. “I think that allows them to hang in there and hold on.”

The Charlotte 49ers scored 29 straight points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 21-point deficit and defeat #24/#25 Gardner-Webb, 53-51, for Charlotte’s first-ever win over a ranked FCS program.

The 49ers trailed 45-24 entering the fourth quarter. They forced a pair of turnovers and a safety while scoring four touchdowns to take a 53-45 lead with 2:19 to play. The Runnin’ Bulldogs responded with a touchdown drive of their own but their two-point conversion under pressure was incomplete with 00:31 left.

Charlotte scored 22 points in a span of 3:01, including touch-downs on three consecutive offensive plays. QB Matt Johnson hit Austin Duke for a 21-yard TD pass to make it 45-40. After a three-and-out for GWU, Johnson connected with Trent Bostick for a 48-yard pass on the 49ers first play from scrimmage to make it 46-45, 49ers. After forcing a fumble, Alan Barnwell took the next snap 56 yards for a 53-45, 49ers lead.

The two teams combined for 104 points and 1163 combined yards of total offense.

Johnson matched his high with 5 TD passes and recorded his second 300-yard game with a record 342 passing yards. Trent Bostick became the 49ers first 100-yard receiver with 107 yards and Barnwell set new highs with 97 yards rushing and his 56-yard TD run.
