About Imago DeiImago Dei Middle School, established in 2005, serves boys and girls in the

5th through 8th grades from eligible families in Tucson. We are focused on educating the whole child and breaking cycles of poverty.

Admission is based on qualification for the National School Lunch Program.

Imago Dei is committed to:

• Faith-based education nurturing respect for all faiths and traditions

• Graduate Support Program for all grades and alumni

• Strong partnerships with families and community

• Extended day, week and year with free meals & all materials provided

• Small classes (20 students or fewer)

• Tuition-free education

Our annual cost per child is approximately $17,000. We operate as a tuition-free school due to the economic limitations of students’ families; therefore, donor support is essential for the success of our mission.

Imago Dei is modeled after the Epiphany School in Dorchester, MA.

A Community of AbundanceA little over a decade ago my life was altered forever by a volunteer opportunity to create some crazy art with the students of Imago Dei Middle School. Our creative goals centered on repurposed materials and were designed for conservation: aesthetic borne of necessity. At the time, I was struck by that need, which was omnipresent in the life of the school. In the days, weeks, and, eventually, years following that project, I have become overwhelmed by the abundance found in this community.

As we near the end of our twelfth year providing quality, private education to economically disadvantaged youth in Tucson, I am still overwhelmed by that abundance. We are honored to have had such visionary and dogged founders. We are blessed with an incredible bounty of volunteers and donors, who make our educational model possible. We are fortunate to have a relationship with all of our 123 graduates, each of whom is pursuing their own respective dreams. Dreams shared and nurtured by caring and dedicated staff and faculty, unrivaled in their commitment to our mission of breaking cycles of poverty through education. Dreams borne by families that devote themselves to their children’s future. Our scholars exemplify our four core values; respect, honesty, responsibility, and excellence, every day. We are swimming in love.

Certainly, there is still great need among the families we serve. Every day is a challenge. But we are grateful to be able to meet challenge and need with promise and hope. It is because of you, and the abundance of this community that we are able to continue to alter lives and overwhelm. Thank you.

Proud Achievements

Christel, IDMS Eighth Grader & Honor Roll ScholarAccepted: Salpointe Catholic High School, St Augustine Catholic High SchoolCareer Aspiration: Biomedical EngineerFavorite class at Imago Dei: Math with Miss Beggs

“I’ve always wanted to help other people and make a difference, and while I know there are many careers in which you can help people, designing ar-tificial limbs is the one that caught my eye. It seems like a way to make life much better for people who need help. At Salpointe, I’m hoping to get into Engineering Fundamentals, where I can start learning to code and other things I’ll need to be an engineer.”

Anthony, Imago Dei Class of 2015Junior at Salpointe Catholic High School

AP Honor Roll, Robotics Club Strong interest in science, engineering & programming

Applying to UA, NAU, MIT

April, Imago Dei Class of 2013Desert Mountain High School, Scottsdale, Class of 2017

Freshman at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff Major: Psychology

“I loved Imago Dei - the small classes and the relationship between students and teachers - they really knew us as people. I learned cognitive

thinking there - how to take a theory and apply it. I’ve always been fascinated by how the mind works - my dream is to teach psychology at

the college level.”

“I liked the science and math classes at Imago Dei, because those are my favorite subjects, but I also really enjoyed all our community projects and being downtown. When you’re there, you feel like you’re part of the

neighborhood.”

Remarkable Scholars

Christel, IDMS Eighth Grader & Honor Roll ScholarSouthern Arizona Community Academy, Class of 2013Graduating from the University of Arizona, May 2018, with a Bachelor’s degree in behavioral scienceCareer goal: Master’s Degree-level certified mental health counselor

“Imago Dei was the turning point in my life. In many ways it shaped who I eventually became. I was instilled with many values that I still carry with me. It was a family to me, and it still is. I owe everything to my amazing teachers and people whom I met along the way. In many ways the school has become a family tradition for us. My siblings attend Imago Dei, and that is something that I am very proud of. “

A year of growth & changeExtraordinary supporters

A permanent school home

An astounding gift - IDMS acquires Santa Theresa Tile Works

Thanks to Angel Charity for Children and other generous donors, we acquired our school buildings on 6th Ave, and started making them more beautiful and usable.

Longtime school supporter Susan Gamble gave her iconic, sustainable, community-building business to the school, creating not just a revenue stream, but incredible opportunites for arts education, family employment, and visibility.

Dayna Sandoval

Pappas supports Imago Dei with Arizona State Tax Credit monies, and with many kinds of direct support. In partnership with Nationwide Vision and other community partners, Pappas wholly underwrites our annual Thanksgiving Meal giveaway to our school families, and provides lovely Christmas gifts for students’ families. Pappas has also made countless other in-kind gifts to the school. When our students need something, Dayna is always there. Thank you!

Almost 6 years have passed since Pappas Kids was introduced to Imago Dei Middle School — every year has been more impressive than the last.

I often reflect on the first visit I had at Imago Dei. Upon walking through the doors, I was greeted by a woman with a warm smile and a welcoming hug. Soon after, I learned that this woman was Anne Sawyer, one of the founders of Imago Dei. I had the privilege of touring the campus with Anne as she shared its history. She shared with me that the school has “a mission of breaking cycles of poverty through education” — coincidentally, that is also the mission of Pappas Kids.

One thing I observed in every classroom during the tour is that the children looked very comfortable and “at home” in their learning environment. It was so comforting to see that the teachers were all very nurturing, the staff was extremely attentive to the needs of the students, and, most importantly, the students were joyfully engaged in their classroom activities. It was apparent the staff and children had become a “family” unit, something I had not witnessed in a school in years.

At the end of the visit, I was able to discuss some of the goals, needs, and wants for the students of Imago Dei.  Anne exhibited so much love and compassion for all of the youth and their families.  We shared a wonderful conversation about the importance of giving these children every opportunity to succeed.

Pappas Kids has always had a focus on providing educational assistance to homeless, underprivileged and at-risk youth. Considering our nearly identical goals and missions, it has been a natural fit between Imago Dei and Pappas Kids.

We are honored to be a part of a school that has become a second home to children in need.

Director, Pappas Kids Schoolhouse Foundation

Imago Dei’s founders, The Rev. Anne Sawyer and The Rev. Susan Anderson-Smith, with Belle and Cooper in their new home, New York City. They opened IDMS in 2006, and were the school’s heart and soul for eleven astonishing years. Anne is now rector of St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery, an historic Manhattan parish.
