Stewardship Thought: “The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.” - Matthew 13:22
Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of
your life? Are you so caught up in worldly activities that you
have no time for God? Stewardship is a lifestyle to be lived
every day. It effects all the decisions we make. What we
receive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with others
all the other days of the week.
A Tweet From POPE FRANCIS: A Christian’s mission
in the world is splendid, it is a mission intended for
everyone, it is a mission of service, excluding no one!

MISS BEHAVIOR Dear Miss Behavior:
What can you tell us about the sign of the cross that we use so frequently? Is that something that is rooted in our history?
Sincerely, Justa Parishioner
Dear JP:
The early Christians who made this sign used the right thumb and traced the cross on their forehead. Circa 200 A.D. Tertullian, one of the Church Fathers, said, “We Christians wear out our foreheads with the sign of the cross,” so they must have been using this gesture quite frequently. By the fourth century, the sign of the cross involved other parts of the body beyond the forehead. As you know, we now make the sign of the cross by touching the forehead, then the chest, then the left shoulder, then the right shoulder as we say, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.” Even left-handed people like me use the right hand for this important gesture. Note that the Orthodox as well as members of certain rites within the Catholic Church (e.g., Byzantine Catholics) touch the right shoulder first and then the left.
Saint Ephrem of Syria, who lived in the fourth century, wrote the following: “Mark all your actions with the sign of the life-giving Cross. Do not go out from the door of your house till you have signed yourself with the Cross. Do not neglect that sign whether in eating or drinking or going to sleep, or in the home or going on a journey. There is no habit to be compared with it. Let it be a protecting wall round all your conduct, and teach it to your children that they may earnestly learn the custom.”
When we pray by ourselves it is customary to begin and end our prayers with the sign of the cross. Priests bless the people and certain religious objects (a medal, for example) with the sign of the cross. We customarily begin and end liturgies with the sign of the cross. As we enter a church, we usually dip our fingers into holy water and make the sign of the cross as a blessing and as a reminder of our baptism. I am told that the fonts used today may have originated in fountains placed in front of the entrances to early Roman basilicas, so that the faithful could wash their face and hands before attending liturgies.
The sign of the cross is a rich, powerful, and beautiful gesture that reminds us of the central reality of our faith: Christ’s death on the Cross and his Resurrection.
SAINT OF THE WEEK Saint Mary Magdalene
One of Jesus’ best known followers, Mary was probably from Magdala on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. She has at times been identified with the sinner who anointed Jesus’ feet at the home of Simon (Luke 7) and also with Mary, Martha’s sister, but scholars dispute the claims and the Bible provides no evidence for these connections. Mary Magdalene had seven demons cast from her by Jesus (Mark 16 and Luke 8), was among the women weeping at the Crucifixion, and was privileged to be among the women who found the empty tomb after the Resurrection. Mary Magdalene was the first person to see Jesus Christ later that day. The Lord told Mary to tell his friends that he had risen from the dead, and so “Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’” and related what Jesus had said about “’going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God’” (John 20:17). One ancient tradition tells of Mary Magdalene’s journey with Saint John to the city of Ephesus, where she died; another tradition popular in France has Mary going to Provence with Martha and Lazarus and dying there. Mary Magdalene is the patron saint of many places and people, including apothecaries, converts, glove makers, and the city of Casamicciola, Italy. Magdalen College at Oxford University is named after her. We celebrate the feast of St. Mary Magdalene on July 22.
